I'm one of the Tolkien fans who would be very hard for the makers of this show to please. For instance, while I loved the movies from the first and recognized them as perhaps the greatest achievement in cinema history, and I always recognized that they couldn't be completely faithful to the books and still be good movies, there were some changes which took me years to become reconciled to and others that I still think were unnecessary. So going into this series I was prepared to judge it on two levels: was it a faithful adaptation, and if not, was it a something I could enjoy by pretending that it had nothing to do with the Lord of the Rings. On the first question I was actually quite happy with their decision to set the series in the Second Age. After all, that's probably the time period that Tolkien fleshed out the least, so it left them with a lot of latitude to invent their own characters and stories without contradicting Tolkien lore. And aside from Galadriel, who clearly had nothing (other than having a brother with the right name) in common with Tolkien's Galadriel from the very beginning, for many episodes I was hopeful that they might do okay on this. But eventually it became clear that they didn't really care about conforming to any Tolkien lore except to the extent that it could provide a superficial feel of Lord of the Rings. In other words, while this show is clearly inspired in many ways by Tolkien's work, it isn't any more so than any other modern work of high fantasy. They've just shamelessly plugged their story into a framework that loosely resembles Tolkien's outline of the Second Age and shamelessly stolen names from his story. In other words, the Tolkien connection is pretty much just for marketing purposes. So that's a major turn off for me, but that still leaves the question: if it weren't claiming to be related to the Lord of the Rings, is it a good story that I could enjoy? And in the end, it fails for me on this count as well. I found that after the first 6 or 7 episodes I kind of lost interest. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't horrible. There were parts that I liked a lot. But there were too many things that just seemed too contrived and/or ridiculous for me to get lost in it. I may yet eventually watch the rest of the season, but I can't say that I'm in any hurry to do so.

The more I think about the series the worse it gets, so yeah its not a total 0/10 but pretty bad and a perfect example of bad modern day writing and film making.

There are numerous books you can read to speed you up on Sauron's, and Galadriel's backgrounds. There are also a number of them that can be put off. I'd recommend The Silmarillion first, it wanders from story to story a lot like a verbal retelling would and that's not a bad thing. It's a fairly thorough read, and doesn't drag so much. I'd also recommend the Hobbit (book and movies), The Tolkien Reader, and A Dictionary of Middle Earth.

But none of those books will help with the questions arising from this series, because they've pretty much quit even trying to have their story be compatible with what Tolkien wrote.

The Hobbit (1977) is the greatest adaptation of Tolkien's books. No, I will not elaborate. If you're a fan of the Jackson films, Games Workshop (the people who make Warhammer) have also made a tabletop wargame with sculpts based on the films done by the Perry brothers. The game is still played, getting new releases all the time (20 years after the films), and it's one of the better rule sets GW has ever made. While you obviously don't want to jump into a new expensive hobby that's really time consuming while you're at school, it's worth checking out Golden Demon winners (the largest Games Workshop painting competition) for Lord of the Rings. It's always neat seeing how different painters interpret the same subject matter with different colors and how it affects the tone. Some people choose to match their models exactly to the films, others try to create stuff from other non-Jackson adaptations, and some painters go completely nuts. You ever wondered what Gandalf the Red would look like? What about a Balrog made of ice?

The Hobbit is a very good adaptation particularly for the time, the battle of five armies is far superior in the animated feature vice the live action by far. We invite thee to Join us for our counter ROP series, we must stop watching this even for negative publicity because it feeds the amazon rating system, Mae G'ovannen! Now the evidence is clear, and none can deny that "ROP" is not of Tolkien. Take heart and join us for our just released third installment of EXSURGE TOLKIEN that makes robustly clear the heresy of Tolkien's Canon displayed out of the showrunner's mouths and hearts. They probably know nothing of Tolkien's masterpiece, as evident from their interview in the Vanity Fair Article. For "they who proclaim to loveth Tolkien, yet understandeth, not his world view can neither hope to create a new film, show, or series of his secondary world." "Auta i lóme!" and" Aurë entuluva!"

Sure watch fellowship, and the rest. You won’t get too much of the Sauron backstory you’re after in the Lord of the Rings novel; the history in Silmarillion will give you most of what’s available.

Whoever enjoyed it, no hate, good for them, that's all that matters. I personally watched too many Cinema Sins and Honest Trailers to shut my brain off that hard though. Too many stupid things happened, not to mention that i was bored out of my mind after 2 episodes and simply gave up and only watched a couple reviews from both sides of the aisle (positive/negative). But plotholes like "why can't the elves see the orks building an endless trench from a watchtower that can look over the entire flat planes as far as mount doom", or how "an elven build tower collapses cause Don Lemonless shoots a single rope with 1 arrow", or how "abandoing your fortified keep and instead defending a village with no strategic advantage whatsoever is somehow better" and the kicker "everyone survives a point blank pyroclastic flow" simply blow my mind. That is not just a nitpicky oversight, it's major writing flaws. And then add to that a Sauron reveal that was obvious AF since Episode 2, a Main character that is so obnoxious, if she were a man, you'd read about toxic masculinity and mansplaining in every major newsarticle in the mainstream media and you got yourself a divisive show at best. Also, all apparently Guyladriels fault, i mean that is what the story tells us right? She proclaimed him King of the Southlands, though he rejected it and said he found the thingy on a dead body, she is the one that janked him out of Numenor, even though he wanted to stay, she brought him to the elves, who for some reason healed him but didn't realize he wasn't human somehow (great doctors you got ther lmao). Like wtf is this?

I'm not going to claim RoP is perfect (I'm not that delusional lol) but it feels like a chunk of the fandom scrambled for any argument as to why people liked a show they didn't other than, god forbid, people just disagreed with them. Slightly related, the fact the composer for the show's legitimate name is Bear McCreary made me laugh, he sounds like he was born to compose for a fantasy show XD

I actually really liked it. Yes it had flaws and i know some people are pissed at it. Amazon didn't get rights to all of tolkiens work so they kinda had to fill in gaps and come up with some stuff on their own. There are very few true fantasy shows out there and this one just helped fill that gap or at least I feel like it did. Moving beyond LOTR. Are you going to do reactions for Tales of the Jedi. While i was watching i was wondering what your reaction would be. In short it fills in some gaps and has a lot of heart. I don't want to say anymore then that because it is that good. I actually got teary eyed a few times.

Double face palm. I will not get into any of the lore about Tolkiens work here except to say this show is about 99% incorrect about it all. I will say your comment about Amazon doing research into archery is pretty funny as Arondir actually has his bowstring hand held the wrong way. It’s literally backwards from how you fire a bow.
@nekrataali
Жыл бұрын
It was also better to have your quiver holstered to your waste for faster reloading. Reaching behind your head to pull out an arrow is just cumbersome ergonomics. Historically, archers only carried quivers on their backs for transport. Once on the battlefield? You want that shit on the hip next to your reloading hand.
@HSPaisley

In the research that I have done about archery, I'm also waiting for an archer to have their quiver at their waist. I also read somewhere that arrows would just be in the belt, and archers would not even have a quiver. I'm not sure where that was though. As for his hand being the wrong way or whatever, okay man. The arrow wasn't magically going through the bow, and it wasn't falling off. In my book, that's better than the other stuff. But feel free to stay angry.
