Next time do this over a few days by doing small layers. This allows all the water to freeze into ice. Otherwise you end up with a ice layer over water like a frozen lake.

What I learned about backyard ice rinks is that thin layers of water freeze better. So putting like 1-2 inches of water at a time, letting that freeze then add another layer. Freezing in layers makes the ice solid all the way through. If it gets cold enough, your rink will freeze all the way through. Also it's so cool to see a dad that creates these kinds of spaces for his family. My parents made a backyard rink for me as a kid, and it is seriously the best thing!

@CM-th2oe

Good job, but, if you see the thickness of the ice ...put just a little less water than that thickness to start...when that freezes add about a 1/4 inch at a time... you started with to much thermal mass. Add thin layers often and you'll get thicker, stronger, smoother ice..... I spent a few hours watching ice put down in a professional ring and they literally used a regular hose and that's all they did...over and over....

You have to do it in layers. An indoor ice rink only has about 1/2 inch ice over the painted concrete surface. Never done an outdoor rink but it looked like too much water.

ice is actualy a very good insulator so when you do a thick layer the ice at the top prevents the resst from freezing. it would be better to go like an inch at a time to make sure its all ince before you go to the next layer

you need to freeze it in layers if you want it to go faster. its a pain but thin layers stacking up like that make it go faster in the long run. either that or just fill her up, and leave it for like a week.
