I need to share that I was one of those little goth teens that was blown away when UD exploded on the scene. Nothing like them existed before! I was eventually shamed out of wearing makeup while in a decade long abusive relationship. When I finally made it out and I was in shelter, I was gifted a Naked palette, lipsticks, eyeshadows and more from UD. For anyone unaware: UD donates thousands of dollars of cash and product to domestic violence shelters. UD helped me to gain the confidence to play and enjoy my own creativity. Makeup may seem frivolous when you’re homeless, but it changes your whole outlook when you step out to face the battles you have to fight to climb out of that situation. When I stepped into their flagship location in Newport Beach and thanked the employees working that day, there was zero “rude cool girl” attitude. When you support UD, you support women rediscovering their freedom, like me and many others. ❤

The newer Moondusts are nice but they are more of a topper and I desperately miss the ones with high pigment! 90% of the Vice lipstick colors have also disappeared. It’s so insane to me that Urban Decay had such a unique cool, fresh, weird, edgy, rebellious and modern brand identity and perspective that stood distinctly apart from the rest of the industry, and then just completely threw it all away, and turned into another boring version of M.A.C. or something, maybe with a couple extra pops of color here and there. To have hit the jackpot so well with your branding and then to just completely abandon it is so crazy… I feel like brands such as About Face and Kaleidos have taken up their mantle while Urban Decay sinks further into obscurity. I was one of those 'alternative people' of the late 90's and we had to travel 2 hours on the train to Chicago to find a department store that carried Urban Decay back when all their lipsticks were shaped as bullet casings. My favourite was they did these little palettes called the Face Case and they had like 6 and they all came with four different eye shadows, two lipsticks, two glosses in little half pans and then a larger pan of either bronzer, glitter, or glittery highlighter. I had four of the six and loved them so much, each had a different colour story and all the colours worked together. I wish they would do them again.

I loved their old eye pallets. They had some tiny ones-a skull and crossbones one that I loved. I had all of the big ones like Alice In Wonderland. I still love their 24/7 pencils. The new liquid eyeliners are fantastic (I want more colors! ) and the blushes are lovely.

I was never particularly wowed by the all nighter spray as the atomiser was a bit uneven and left me with chalky looking splotches on my finished makeup, but I've always been surprised by how few people talk about their Primer Potion these days - as someone with oily skin this was the ONLY game in town as far as eyelid primers go for the longest time and is still my go-to product, nothing else holds my eyeshadow in place as well as this stuff does!

I used to be all about Urban Decay. Their 24/7 eyeliners, matt lipsticks and amazing sparkly eyeshadows were amazing. But once they started on Naked, everything got boring. The last straw was when i went into the Covent Garden store to get some new eyeliner and the sales girls laughed at me because I'm quite a lot older and less trendy than their target audience. I take my money elsewhere now.

When I was 14 my first "big girl brand" purchase was UD. An eye shadow and nail polish in asphyxia. I loved them. When I saw they collabed with Robin Eisenberg, it gave me hope for the brand. UD has always screamed color, glitter, daring, etc. They were in this pinky-beige phase for so long and I missed them trying something they may have considered risky. I hope they go out on a ledge with more exciting products (like what you mentioned!)

Personally I think those giant PR packages are wasteful. It usually turns me off from a brand. It is sad that wastefulness is what goes viral because it is flashy and attention grabbing. UD was one of the first brands of makeup I’ve tried and they have a special place in my heart.

I'm glad someone is finally calling them out. UD was my favorite brands and one of the first brands I ever tried (starting with the original face cases and body powders, around 2001). They were the trendsetters. The branding was considered very alternative, and they released products and shades that no other brand dared to try, including cream blush. I was loyal to them until the Gwen palette. It was a huge disappointment, especially the blue shade. I used it twice, kept it for a few years, then ended up throwing it away in preparation for a move. I still have a good amount of UD products in my stash, but haven't purchased from them since the Heat collection came out. What they've become is sad but not all is lost. One thing I would like for them to change (again) is their single shadows. I'd prefer to buy the pans without extra packaging and just stick it into a magnetic palette. It's hilarious that Midnight Cowboy "went viral," considering it was one of their first eyeshadows.

Their original eye primer is a MUST for my super oily hooded eyes, nothing else will do. I love and still use the naked 3 palette (those cool pinky/ mauve-y shades work well on me). The 24/7 eye pencils were disappointing on the other hand. They smudged too much (probably bad combo of smooth product on oily and hooded eyes).

Urban Decay had some scented All-Nighter sprays come out over the years like Cherry scent for Naked Cherry's collection, and they were so good! Totally agree they should do this! I worked with the brand recently and it's very focused on going back to their roots, and it made me very happy. Their global beauty director has so much passion and I think we'll see that translate in the near future!

I remeber the hype surrounding Urban Decay in 2008-2010-ish. They had some great nail polishes for a short while. Everyone wanted the primer potion. Then released about a 1,000 Naked palettes and I think everyone lost interest somehow. But as you said there weren’t that much choice back then. No one would react if a similiar collection was released today. I love these series. Makes me think back of when I was young…erh, I mean younger😂

To start, I'm 55. The 80's and 90's were my "youth". Urban Decay was to makeup like Hot Topic was to fashion. It brought the underground (from the 70's punk to 90's grunge) to the general public. Best way I can put the feeling of the times into words. I loved UD then, and I still love it now. ❤
