I had an absolute blast playing Guerilla. There was nothing like driving to a HQ, stocking up with tons of ammunition, driving to an EDF base and unleashing chaos on buildings, soldiers, vehicles, planes and everything in between. I played this on PS3 / 360 several times. I had fun with the MP also. Armageddon on the other hand was such a let down. Red Faction Guerrilla was truly a great game but it had one major flaw: Mars in it did not look like a massive bustling and industrialized colony, it looked more like a fledgling backwater settlement, its buildings were small, architecturally simplistic and the inside of them didn't look functional at all, they simply did not look like these were buildings inhabited by people.

Red Faction 1 was the first PC shooter I got *really* into as a kid, and it was incredible. The dynamic terrain deforming aspect was more than just a gimmick, a few maps really had unique strategies like digging a tunnel with explosives through the outer wall of the map to make a shortcut between the flags, which totally changed the game as the fight was for control of the new tunnel path. Loved the original, 2 was a miss, but Guerilla was fun too. Sad to see the series fall from grace.

Played RF:Armageddon earlier this year again after many years, and I was actually surprised how good fun it was, and got the impression that it was nowhere near as bad game as reviews say. Sure, it's odd to step back from open world to linear level structure on sequel, especially since the previous game was such a blast. But as I played it, I felt that it really was a great, if little generic, 3rd person shooter with cool weapons and level designs, some of the later levels had excellent artstyle and graphics. Volition was one of those teams that suffered from not growing big enough to beef up some of the games they put out more, they always felt like an underdog studio with some great concepts, but never made it big time.

I wouldn't consider Volition's closure the end of the Red Faction franchise. The Volition that shat out this fucking terrible Saints Row reboot has nearly nothing in common with the same Volition that developed Red Faction Guerrilla, Ship of Theseus and all that, plus Embracer also has many other talented development teams that could give this franchise a breath of fresh air. Maybe even bring it back to the sandbox gameplay of Guerrilla, specially now that the technology is far more advanced than during the PS3/X360 generation and our current consoles and PCs can support a much more complex open-world than they used to.

All the Red Faction games had something cool about them. RF1 with its destructible environments and (for its time) impressive graphics set a high mark for the series. RF2 with its fast paced explosive heavy action, interesting cast of characters including some big names doing voice work (Jason Statham being one of them) and my real first taste of split screen multiplayer for consoles and bot matches. RF Guerilla for its Just Cause style chaos and pretty fun driving. Even RF Armageddon for some fun fights against the bugs of Mars, nifty nano stuff and very nice looking locations. Pretty much the only thing I hate about Red Faction is the just plain horrible pilot for the tv show that thankfully never got picked up and the fact it ended on a less then stellar note with the not all that great (but I still feel not bad) Armageddon.

They didn't get we just wanted the sandbox... Armageddon's linear gameplay was such a stupid idea! It could have been a Skyrim type rpg, with a ton of side quests to get lost at, a rudimentary lore, and a main story that is meaningless, and we'd still pay for it if the building destruction was there. I mean, I was doing that in Guerrilla so much! Driving around the map, shooting at big buildings. I didn't care about the story at all. Now pair that with a co-op multiplayer like how they did in gta online, and that's a success for years and years. They repeated the same mistake in Crackdown 3. We expected Terry Cruz destruction in a city level scale, and we got a boring baby's sandbox instead. The suits that run companies these days never learn. You can see original Volition crew are all gamers and nerds. When she's interviewing him he's sweating bullets being so close to a girl. THOSE are the people that should decide game design, not the suits! And I think it all started when they started bringing hollywood actors and their agents. I don't care if the guy I shot has the voice of Statham.. all I care is dropping a building on top of the bad guy, and watch him run in terror. How could they miss the ball for so many miles.. they had it in the bag.. Damn corporations..

I played through Red Faction countless times, played Red Faction 2 once, and it was bland, and I could never really get into the 3rd person ones. The original to me is a classic on PC, like GoldenEye 007 is for N64 FPS.

You should still try to revisit Guerrilla in its Re-Mars-Tered form. Still waiting for GoldenEye 64 and Perfect Dark to get proper PC ports.

I never played Red Faction one, but I had 2 on the playstation and I loved it. It was one of my favourite games back in the day. I also loved 3. It's a shame the franchise and Volition died.

"Dead" would mean Red Faction I and Guerrilla are woefully delisted, which they aren't. And besides, Volition is better off dead than be unanesthetically gutted by EA and Ubisoft.

you know whats crazy. vr games aren't even close to the quality of these old 90s early 2000s games. what is wrong with new developers? does no one have passion for game development anymore? i am sure there are plenty of developers that love their job but i don't think they have real passion for it.

Chase Trending, Hyper Realism and Relatable or Believable games are the standard of gaming nowadays. The 90s and 2000s of video games will never be topped, those were decades worth of greatness. They had so much style and coolness to them that is a stark contrast to how uncool gaming feels today. As for VR games, not only do a lot of them feel very clunky to play but if you think about it, they're not doing something entirely unique with them, just copying what others are doing. An even when they do, they forget about the game's quality itself. What a complete downgrade gaming has become eh?

Red faction 1 and Guerilla were 2 of my favorite games back in the day on pc. I still occasionally play Guerilla, and love the mods that have extended its life.

I hope someday someone new comes along to take healm of Red Faction and Saints Row now that Volition is sadly gone. These franchises deserve it

Red Faction I and Guerrilla are still going strong on the PC, so they're already in good hands. Now, Saints Row 2... man, when's that polished PC rerelease gonna come out?
