Nice video. Existing trolleybus networks are getting extended, it makes a lot of sense especially since they already have a lot of these busses. But new networks aren’t really getting built. And while I would love for more trolleybusses to exist, we have to remember there is high capital cost involved. Trolleybusses fill a tight niche because when you’re building electrification anyway, you’re pretty close to having a tram, which is a big upgrade. However I think I need to defend battery busses a bit. Solaris urbino 12 electric with 300km range has a 520kWh battery. A Tesla model 3 long range has 78 kWh of battery. So this bus has the environmental impact of about 6 teslas, while running all day every day and transporting tons of people. It will also probably be used for longer than the Tesla. And remember, cities like mine can buy busses with small battery and charge at the end of the line. There is also the alternative of hydrogen but right now it’s quite expensive to operate, but has the advantage of less weight Both trolleybusses, battery and hydrogen significantly improve the smoothness of the ride.

I agree that E-buses in general significantly improve the quality of the ride, and I also agree that battery buses are good, too I personally like trolleybuses more, but I do see the benefits of battery buses In the end, if we're moving towards public transport, and away from cars, that's a win in my book

Trolleybuses with batteries are pretty great, not so expensive, deadly, road and cold destroying as battery buses, but still being able to go off wire

If you have the usage (say 70 buses an hour), it could make sense to build wires. They can then branch out without wires reaching out to different districts. Does not make much sense for routes with 2 buses per hour on the other hand.

Yeah, for high demand routes (like the future line 59 trolleybus in Prague, which sees a bus every 2-3 minutes at peak hours), trolleybuses absolutely make sense

One really minor (MAJOR) detail that you missed on the drawbacks of the battery electric buses. They are heavy. Yes, you addressed that, but you didn't address all the problems that causes. Since the vehicle is so heavy, it needs a seriously beefy suspension... and that suspension is going to be incredibly inflexible... and the passenger experience inside the bus is going to be miserable because of it. My city has gone all in on battery electric buses, and on those buses, you can feel every single tiny bump in the road. I ride roller coasters for fun, never feeling sick afterwards... but I'll get motion sickness on our battery electric buses with how rough the ride is.

Trolleybuses are awesome and I wish there were more of them! Battery buses are a good step, of course, but I always feel like something is missing. Especially considering here in Toronto, we used to have a sizeable trolleybus network but it was dismantled due to costs and no replacements to aging fleets. I wasn’t born when the trolleybuses were around but whenever I go to Budapest to visit family, I always long for their return to Toronto. I’d like to think trolleybuses may have a future still, as there will become a time when a large portion of the battery fleet will need replacing and there will be a lot of problems that will arise from this.

Great video. I love the bloopers part.😂 I guess you are from Czechia and from Prag.👍 Could you do a video about the new cableway line in Prag, that was canceled And overall what do you think about cableways as public transportation system?

I love trolleybuses, and the cities that are mainating and expanding them (my city is one of those, but it's doing it extremely slowly). Also, imagine like, one of the biggest trolleybus networks in the world was completely stopped in recent times... oh wait...

I'd be interested to see a comparison of the life expectancy of each type of bus. Over time, the battery in an electric vehicles degrades and the replacement costs are prohibitive so what might seem like the most efficient choice now, could mean they need to purchase new buses sooner. Trolleybuses seem to be the better of both worlds.

I'm afraid that trolleybuses in general are on the last stretch. NIMBYS will always hate overhead lines and will push for battery powered busses. The main issue is that networks are made by the addition of lines which often get opened all at once together with a new fleet of trolleybuses, as soon one of this fleets gets at the end of their lifespan, there will be the question "will we place an order for trolleys and busses separately, or we try to have a larger order just with battery-electric busses?".
@TheTramly

That's unfortunately true..

@@TheTramly An item that would be interesting be about the bus vs trolleybus battle would be if the evidence of transport infrastructure matters on city development patterns. There is a perception that the evidence of physical infrastructure drives local development investments more than less evident infrastructures. As trolleybuses have more or less the same capacity of a bus line, but have more visible infrastructure. I would be curious given two identical areas and providing several level of sole bus or sole trolleybus services if the level of infrastructure drive more investment.

Yes, they're like electric cars in this regard - the electric motor allows the bus to accelerate really quickly
