@@lamborgatti-4783 I know, compared to her to the Queens, Normandie had, besides her steam-electric propulsion, also a lighter hull with better hydrodynamics. Definitely more modern, also one of the first ships with the "Clipper-styled" bow, in my opinion much better looking than the straight bow the Queens had. And the Queen Mary won the Blue Riband just because of raw power.

Many thanks for the lovely tribute and gorgeous footage. If I had to choose one, this would be so difficult. SS United States rode high out of the water and was an extraordinary ship with unprecedented stability, given her aluminium superstructure and superspeed. She was somewhat sterile by decorative standards, but was intended to look like a ship by William Francisc Gibbs when her built her to be quite functional, which is an American trait. She also could be converted into a troopship for Cold War deployments in 24 hours. RMS Queen Elizabeth was stunning on the interior and never quite generated the fanfare or popularity of her running mate, RMS Queen Mary. Having been aboard Queen Mary on a few occasions, she is indeed lovely and both ships incorporated the use of woods from all over the empire, some of which are now extinct. As a fan of woods, the Queen Elizabeth would win on the decorative scale. However, in terms of architectural integrity and wonder, The Big U has my vote. Save the SS United States, everyone! Go to the SS US Conservancy to help save her from the scrapyard. She is America's flagship, a time capsule and a museum to the Golden Age of the Transatlantic Liners.

My grandparents and parents sailed on both of these ships and they eventually preferred the United States over the Cunarder. My mother sailed on the ssUS to Europe for the first time in 1959 and she told me that the ship was the cleanest 'best smelling' ship she was ever on up to that point. Another USL strike in 1962 caused my grandparents to permanently abandon taking the ship to Europe. My parents continued and started sailing on the France in 1963 and that ship became my mom's new favorite.

As a young lad (14) I was very fortunate to sail on the SS United States on her second to last voyage New York - Le Harve on June 24, 1969. It was a great trip and a tremendous adventure for me. I still have some memento's. Sadly, she now resides about 20 miles away, gutted and rusting in a Philadelphia dock. Having never been on the RMS Queen Elizabeth I'd be hard pressed to render a decision but. . . .I can tell you without any reservation, the SS United States was a helluva ship. Both have a great story to tell.

I too had the privilege as a boy in the fourth grade to sail on the United States from New York harbor down through the Caribbean(and back) in 1964. Not many kids my age were on the ship so my parents just cut me loose during the day. I got to know a lot of the crew on this adventure and even managed my way down to see the engines. The ship was almost sterile in its design, quite different from QE. However, there was almost as many crew as passengers, to serve you. All the crew took pride in the ship....not just doing their jobs. It was a grand adventure and in the harbor, before we departed, the SS France was there as well. Quite a sight seeing the two ships in close proximity. The big cruise ships today are floating turds by comparison. They are run by computers and if anything fails in navigation, bad things usually follow with seemingly poorly trained crews. The QE was about 20yrs older than the United States. In ship speak that's a LOT....like a prop plane compared to a jet.

Liners meant something different culturally back then: they had meaning. What you are saying is totally on target: today there are the ameneties, but were the personalities of the ships? There was difference back then among all these liners, now there is sameness. Perhaps the world had more gaps back then that could be filled with beauty. But alas, only the more ethereal (literature, music, art) works endure more. The more solid the substance, the more fleeting their existence. But seriously, the QE is a great ship, but she´s beautiful in the sense that a big-boned and muscular woman is beautiful. The US was already the swerving away into the direction of the most beautiful ships of all time: those glorious liners of the 60s with their perfect streamlining and feminine curves. The US seems to combine the masculine power with the beginning of those feminine curves we would see in the great France, and the Italian liners.

The only super liner today is Queen Mary 2, and she's the best looking and least blockiest because she's a liner, not a cruiser ship, which are the common floating blocks you mean. But there is a difference, QM2 looks more like a proper ship, and handles more like a proper ship - she was, like these old ships, designed to go across the atlantic, no matter the weather, and do it on time. Modern cruise ships don't have the same schedule, and can spend some time getting slowed down by stormy weather.

Q.E. seemed built to thrust through the seas, and push them out of the way. U.S. was constructed to utilize physics to overcome the water in which she steamed. Each was grand for its own reasons, but book me on the "United States", provided smoking is completely banned from all rooms!

There is no contest or comparison where I'm concerned, it's SS United States all the way! Still has unbroken speed records to this day; but that's not the only thing that is great about her. It's hard to talk about her without using superlatives, she was so special. She was super built, over-built, made of the best materials and every aspect of this ship was supervised by her creator, William Francis Gibbs. At the time she was built, it was the largest order of aluminum made in the world. Walt Disney even made a movie featuring the SSUS in its first 45 minutes, called "Bon Voyage!". This ship is truly America's flagship.

Living just outside Southampton, I was often taken down to the docks as a nipper to look at the liners with my parents and clearly remember these great liners. The Queens coming home to Southampton alternate weeks and the SS United States & SS America (bit of a tiddler compared to the other liners) doing the same. The Lizzie was the star of the show for me and looked far more modern and solid than the Mary. The United States looked like it was built for speed very sleek but also looked so much smaller than the Queens. The late 50's and early 60's was a great time to watch all the liners coming in and out of Southampton especially if you stood on Royal Pier, or better still on Western Shore. Go down to the docks today, plenty of ships, but they all look like floating blocks of flats.

I would choose 'Elizabeth' mainly because of her sister ship Queen Mary on which I crossed the Atlantic in Dec. 1965, west to east. Made a tour of the engine rooms and was told by the guide that the United States beat the normal crossing time of the 'Mary' by five hours and then spent a lot of time in dry dock. At that time the 'Mary' was on three screws instead of the normal four and crossed at the average speed of 30 mph. You could water ski behind her.

The US represented the apex is Post-War design and technology: a lovely, classic and unadorned straight beauty - giving it a powerful (the great smoke stacks) sleek look. In later ships (France, Michelangelo, Raffaello and QE2), improved and more streamlined hull design as well as stabilizers increased stability greatly over the Queens and the US. Not sure if the older ships were fitted later with stabilizers. But the US was apparently much more stable in bad weather than the larger Queens.

The Q.E. and the Normandie were the greatest “liners” ever built. Today’s heaps of junk aren’t liners they are built solely for the cruise market with an over capacity of passengers to maximise profits. The only exception being Q.M.2 which is nice but lacks the sheer quality and taste of the old ships. You can’t really compare Q.E. with U.S. they are very different and both have their own personality. The one certain conclusion is that both beauties make the current lot look exactly what they are - kitschy, hideous condo looking blocks being pushed through the water - lol.

Both ships represent a lost esthetic which has long since given way to the new condo-cassino-and-mall design of cruise ships which look like floating refrigerators or shopping carts. That´s understandable: these ships were the main form of conveying passengers across the sea back then. The US represents the last great ship of the classic esthetic, of which the QE and the QM were outstanding examples (also the Normandie). This esthetic reaches its apex in the last generation of super liners such as the France, the gorgeous Italian twins, Michelangelo and Raffaello (perhaps the two loveliest and most well-proportioned streamlined liners of all time) and the QE2 (who is later refurbished, began to get top heavy to accomodate the condo-and-balcony mentality - just look what the final and hideous Norway turned into). All these classic liners like the US and the QE and the rest mentioned here, had a unique personality, look and an esthetic (inside and out), unlike the cloned modern-day ships. Even the QM2 doesn´t look very good (unless hugeness means anything - just means more paying passengers, that´s all and that´s the reason: best cruise ships are small), compared to these ships. I could also mention the smaller ships who shared these same esthetic qualities: Rotterdam, Oceanic, Eugenio C, Leonardo Da Vinci, Andrea Doria, C. Colombo and others. The US is a beauty of a ship, with the 40s streamlining (different from the later super liners) and the QE is huge, but beautiful and well-proportioned. Elegance, charm, power, luxury, fun, ambience, pride...you sense those in these ships. Furthermore, the France, Michelangelo and Raffaello were also the most stable liners afloat (when modern stabilizers were introduced in the 60s). I don´t know if the US or the QE were given stablizers, but they were meant to cut sharply through rough waters. I doubt if any modern cruise ship would fell as stable in those choppy waters with their hideous designs. Oh, yes, I would chose the US to cross, and the QE to cross back.

The _United States_ was fast. Like cartoonishly fast. There were those who thought _Queen Elizabeth_ could be faster or as fast as _United States_ until her sea trials, after that the talk was over. To put that into perspective, _SS France_ was the 2nd fastest ocean liner ever put to sea, in trials she made a top speed of 35.21 knots. For comparison, _United States_ AVERAGED 35.59 knots (including an entire day above 36 knots) for her maiden voyage while using roughly 60% of her available power. In any other world, _France_ would have won and kept the Blue Ribband for her entire career. With _United States_ in service, they didn't even bother trying. That's like showing up to a track meet thinking you're pretty quick and seeing Usain Bolt warming up for the same race.

Not gonna lie I really enjoy these videos you put out. The queens were definitely a stunning pair and Elizabeth more so of the two (in my opinion) She was "my" definition of a liner so to speak. Government funding for top tier liners and their owners goes back to the Edwardian era. I may be wrong, but Lusitania and Mauretania received govt funds to build, as did Mary and Elisabeth. Italian Line was forcibly created by Mussolini's merging of several lines and generous spending on Rex and Conte.de Savoia. The French funded CGT for decades, from Normandie until the France was sold. Big U is one of many, and yes, it was designed with naval use in mind. If I remember correctly, the Navy funded part of her construction. As a result she was designed for ultra fast conversion into a troop ship.

The QE had "Majesty and Luxury"....and personality and Soul...the US was like a Bus of the Ocean in comparison imo...i think because it was more Naval Ship than Ocean Liner.

Queen Elizabeth without a doubt. The Big U was an engineering wonder but her interior had all the charm of a battleship.

The QE tried to beat the Winter North Atlantic (WNA)by her immense bulk. The Big U did it by superior design, so she wasn't required to be a "Heavy-Weight Contender" this allowed her to have a destroyer like hull which was of course much more efficent and gracefull, so much so that for decades this was a USN secret. WFG liked to read the shipping trades to discover how many people suffered injuries ( leg breaks, arm, ect.)on the R.M.S. Queens. The Big U was undoubtly the superior ship!

+Noggs Monney May I ask what you're talking about? I've never heard of injuries caused by a ship's design. The United States had speed, but nothing more. Strict Navy regulations meant that she couldn't be adorned with the exquisite interiors of her rivals, a major flaw which turned away many passengers.

Some great images here. The Queen Elizabeth wins for size and interior luxury. The United States was a thoroughbred, she wins on speed and technology (of the era). To this day an image of her out on the ocean conveys speed and power. Even at rest she looks ready to bolt.

I choose the Normandie... the epitome of what liners grew up to be.... and nothing that came after equalled it. United States was the fastest but that doesn't settle the argument. The Queens were retro grandeur but not of the age. Nieuw Amsterdam was a handsome vessel and there were many others but for the great leap forward it is the Normandie. It doesn't get considered because it was neither British nor American but despised French.

Now you had put her speed at 38.3 Knots she made 42 knots on her first voyage but her top speed wasn't fully recorded because her boliers were not open fully so she could have made 45 50 or 55 knots tops with all boliers lit

+brett mcleod Actually the SS Normandie was much more technically advanced and even more luxury than both Queens. And the differences in both size and speed between these three ships weren't so big.

The RMS Queen Elizabeth can be compared to any ship of any time. The Greatest ship ever, most beautiful, and British! The two ship weekly service across the Atlantic, was vision, instead of shops, retail, bar food and liesure we have today in Britain. RBS with other banks has killed much of British industry for short term profit here and foriegn profit because of government action (read ford transit Turkey) at our expense.
