There is a date in the angling diary that all true anglers eagerly anticipate: June 16th, the day the rivers reopen after being closed for three long months.
On this day, any angler worth their salt is out trying to catch big Barbel and chunky Chub. However, as the angler I am, I prefer to spend this glorious day fishing for the smaller species, and get away from the mad rush.
The stunning Dace, The Prince of the Stream, from the River Chew in Keynsham are my primary target, but many other species will no doubt show up from this very mixed species river.
As I venture out on the newly reopened river however, I can't help but ponder the age-old debate: does the river still need a closed season, or has the tradition outlived its purpose?
