The road of water | The waterway is 192 km long, crossing the prefectures of Phocis and Voiotia

In 1950, the population of Athens grew rapidly and the water reserves reached a critical point, so the lake of Marathon, which had been providing water since 1931, was no longer sufficient. The next big project for the water supply of Athens was from Lake Ylikis, but as it turned out it was a temporary solution because they had enough problems with the sources that could not hold the water.
In the 1960s, the area where the lake is now, consisted of a green plain in which was the village of Kallio. The village of Kallio was rebuilt from the beginning on a higher point, however even today in periods of prolonged drought, as happened in the 1990s and nowadays, the lake level drops and the stone houses of the old settlement are revealed, offering an eerie sight.
The construction project for the water supply of Athens began in May 1969 and was completed after a decade, in 1979, but its normal operation began in 1981. The Mornos reservoir was created by the construction of an earthen dam on the Mornos river bed, 7 km .west of the village of Lidoriki in the Prefecture of Fokida. The dam, 126 meters high, is one of the largest in Europe and consists of an impermeable clay core. Water reaches Athens through the Mornos aqueduct, the second largest aqueduct in Europe.
EYDAP supplies Athens with raw water, mainly from surface water sources (Marathonas, Ylikis, Mornos, Evinos). Of these reservoirs, only the one of Ylikis is natural, while the rest are artificial and have been created by the construction of dams in appropriate places on the bed of the respective rivers Evinos, Mornos and Charadros. The water abstraction sources used by EYDAP include underground water resources that are exploited by the operation of 100 boreholes with a total annual pumping capacity of 70-125 million cubic meters. of water approximately per year.
Based on the current operating conditions, EYDAP's water intake sources can be divided into:
Main water sources (Mornos, Evinos)
Auxiliary water dispensers (Yiliki, Marathon)
Backup aquifers (underground water resources)
The "water road" travels for 192 km and crosses the prefectures of Fokida, Viotia and Attica to end up at the water treatment plants of EYDAP, in Mandra, Acharnes and Galatsi.
The lake of Mornos is located between the two large mountains of Roumeli, in the mountains of Giona and Vardousia in the prefecture of Fokida, the 9th largest lake in Greece is located, which has been supplying water to Athens since 1981.
After two consecutive years of no rain and drought, the lake of Mornos shrank noticeably. The water level of the lake that has continuously supplied Athens for years has now dropped by more than 35 meters and another 18 meters in the last year.
For the medium-term service, EYDAP is considering the possibility of supplying with new pipelines - tunnels that will be created from the artificial lake of Kremaston in Acheloos and will transport by gravity 100 million cubic meters of water per year, to the lake of Mornos, so that it does not face for the next Athens has had a water supply problem for 30 years. The specific project is expected to be delivered in 2027 - 2028.
