In Spring 2022, Rode released the RODECaster Pro II, which is a pretty significant upgrade and definitely worth checking out. The original is still awesome too though. I've got a basic walk through of the new one here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/15CJ34WLb6mUqaw

GREATEST ADVICE!!!! People need to be reminded that they don't need all of this equipment to record a podcast. Recording right from a phone won't be the end of the world.

Just got mine, thanks for all the information. If anyone experiences any noise in your mic line, make sure your XLR cables are not crossing with any power cables. Took me a few to figure out, but my monitor power supply was crossing and introducing feedback into my mic line.

Something to consider, the Rodecaster Pro can be used as an audio interface, so if you have a laptop or other computer handy you can record the tracks to software in the computer, and within the computer software you can hit pause. You can also export the final product to mp3 right from the software.

As I educate myself, getting ready to dip my toe into the podcasting waters, I found Tom's video about the Rodecaster among the best I've viewed. Only thing not given was the price, though of course I easily went out and found it. Tom, you are an outstanding presenter.

I'd been recording my podcast with a Mac in a sound room with the pretty decent Blue Snowball mic. Since the lockdown, I've been recording with Garageband on my iPhone with a homemade pop filter, and recording on a bunch of pillows as soundproofing - and I can't really tell the difference. Crossing my fingers! That's not quite why I was writing though. I did want to ask about the noise on your side. You said it's quiet and I think your experience is the norm as others have said it's pretty quiet. Also, what setup did you end up using? Mics etc... Thank you so much for this video. Let me shortly explain why I'm so thankful. I'm about to start my own Podcast and after months of saving money to buy two Rode NT USB mics and the rest of the setup, I drove to my first interview/cohost cast and I drove by train. As you can imagine, I got out of the train and I forgot my bag with all my gear, Microfones, cameras, tripods, memory cards etc. And sadly by now, no one returned the bag to a lost property office. Since then, this happened a week ago, I'm in shock. About my own stupidity and the peoples out there, not returning the bag. Your video showed me, that I can start, even with my iPhone. I new that before, but sometimes you need to have one showing you how to do it. And now I'm saving money to buy the Rodecaster Pro + two Podmics.

Oh man, this is a heartbreaking story. I hope you get new equipment soon. Fortunately, phones are definitely good enough to keep you going in the mean time. It’s always so easy to get caught up in gear. I recently found out that one of my favorite youtubers, who runs a pretty large channel, only uses the built in mic on his camera for everything. I fancy myself an audio snob, but I’ve been watching his videos for years and never had any complaints! It has a lot more to do with who’s behind the mic rather than the mic itself. Best of luck!

@@tombuck How much does the card hold? I know that's probably difficult to answer, but I'm wondering if it's possible to record a 20-minute podcast on the card without having my computer there. Thanks.

I’m using a 64gb card and the Rodecaster says “69 Hours +”. I normally do hour long podcasts with absolutely no issue.

This video convinced me to get the RCP when I watched it about a month ago. I've had it for three weeks and it has been everything you said and more. The firmware updates have made it more awesome and I subscribed just to catch your takes on the betas and different ways go use the RCP. I have a 2 host podcast with 1-2 guests and the bluetooth feature has allowed us to have our guests call in without missing a beat. Thanks for the great videos.

Great overview. Very detailed. It's a nice unit, but $599 is a bit pricey, as you still need to have a mic or a smartphone for this to record. I can do most things with a Zoom H5 at half the price. The Zoom H5 is better for a portable recording session, while the Rodecaster is better for a studio. For recording with 2-3 mics and only headphones for the host, the Zoom H5 is all you need. If you want to record audio directly into your camera, the H5 is also awesome. It even attaches to a tripod or camera hotshoe. It comes with a very nice stereo mic module, which I use for some voiceover work. The big brother Zoom H6 can record 6 channels with ease, and with individual level control for 5 channels. Bottom line, the Rodecaster and the Zoom H5/H6 are amazing devices. Your needs will likely steer you to one or the other. The Zoom H6 might actually be the best, most flexible small-format recording solution under $400 in the world. It can work as a mini-studio or as a portable recording platform. If I were shopping today for the one device with the most versatility, I would buy a Zoom H6 and spend the $200 you saved from not buying the Rodecaster and get some mics and/or headphones.

The H5 and H6 are really great (I use them both at work every day). For portability, the H6 definitely wins and it was what I was going to get for myself, but with the Rodecaster's added channels, Bluetooth, sound pads, AND built in headphone amp, the $599 didn't seem too crazy. But really it's like you said: there are a lot of great options and each person needs to figure out their own specific needs before making a decision. I really appreciate the insightful comment!

Nice enthusiastic review. Saving audio as a Wave file is standard in the audio industry, although BBC did start "aquisitioning" audio for commentary in mp3 a while back. There are converters if you don't want to use audition or audio software to do the conversion. The idea is that you always save a master as Wave (wav) regardless of whether you are going to use it. The idea is that if you revisit your piece, to chop it up and use it in another piece, you are working with the best quality, rather than degrading what is already degraded audio. I think for your purposes, your practice of mastering in mp3 (which most platforms require) is ok because you are not likely to revisit clips. I have the RodeCaster but also racks of gear. Now I look at all the gear and wonder what to do with it? RodeCaster replaces so much and is very tidy.

The "all-in-one" aspect of the Rodecaster makes it worth the price in my book. Luckily the newer software lets you import files a MP3s. Wave files are definitely better, but if I'm just doing my solo podcast with little/no editing, I like being able to upload directly to Anchor. I've also started using Buzzsprout as a host, and they accept Wave files, so that also makes things easier.

I love the Rodecaster Pro! I've been using it for almost a year paired with the Rode PodMic for a separate podcast project and it has not only improved our sound quality but made the editing process so much easier! It's also allowed for better quality sound when interviewing guests via phone or Zoom. My KZitem channel is new and I'm playing with some different sound options and may experiment with the Rodecaster pro for this project as well.

Jon Russo I haven’t had any issues using it with zoom calls. The only limiter has been the stability of internet connection (which has nothing to do with the Rodecaster).

Jon Russo so far I’ve only used the built in camera on my MacBook for zoom calls. Our podcast is currently audio only except for an episode here and there (that we’ve filmed in person) so video quality hasn’t been top of the priority list. But I have used both the headphone jack and the usb connections to get the audio from the MacBook to the rodecaster with no problems.

@@tombuck thanks so much.. actually, I did get distracted a bit wanting what you have in your videos.. but really glad putting what you say in the last of your videos. Really helped me get back in track.. 😄 definitely a plus. Hopefully someday I could decide if I do need it or just want it.. since money doesn't grow on trees, it is earned... and really hard earned.. but if do have it.. maybe I would rethink and recompute what I actually need at the moment then spend it in a way I could also get an ROI out of it.. but until then.. would continue to be inspired and get motivated by your videos! ^_^
