As someone who's been dabbling in various keyboards (pretty much all 'budget',) for something like 50 years (if I include the piano lessons I went to in first and second grade)I've only really gotten interested in synthesizers in the past couple of years, and finally started building a Modular in the past 6 months. Since the Behringer System 100 modules have turned out to be reasonably affordable, it's mostly the track I've been following, with a few kits along the way to add features I either need and don't have the other module at the time (kit midi-cv, passive multis, mixers, etc.) I know that what I'm building, isn't going to be a clone of any commercial synth, but working with these modules, I really did start to get curious about the Roland System 100, and 100m. I've a lot to learn. Thanks for some of the history, and demos of what can be done. Now to go get some sleep so when I awake, I can re-arrange what I've got further. Sequencer just showed up yesterday... (It's not as featureful as the Roland System 100 sequencer, but it's something to do more than I've done with a single cv keyboard interface to a single oscillator. (New collection includes 4 oscillators, but I'm going to need a better midi2cv than one with 2 cv's if I'm going to do more than two keys.. (Yes, I'll patch 3 of the synths for Major cords to get something going.) Again, thank you.

Thank you for the short bit on Vangelis and the album "Spiral", It was not long ago that I read that Vangelis did use the System-100 components to make that track, we have tried a few ways of recreating it and its been most interesting, you should, if viable at all, maybe do a video on that to explore the sure genius and technologies that went into it, while Spiral was a significant album, he had many more, lesser known ones that I really enjoy!

Oh, this takes me back, thank you very much! The twelve steps is probably because it allows for quarter notes and eighth note triplets, which is more complexity than a lot of other options at that time. I remember thinking that made sense; lots of the options that didn't have a divisible by 3 options made me feel like the music it could produce was really limited (as I really love triplets).

Yep absolutely, at 12:19 I said it was likely because of compound time. The System 700 and Korg SQ-10 and a version of the Yamaha CS-30 sequencer use the same 12 or 24 step approach, but it was predominantly 16 as you say.

One of the tricks with this synth and perhaps all patchable keyboards is that fact that there's 3 functions when patching the synth not 2. So you have unplugged which uses the internal patching. plugged in which re routes bypasses internal patching and just touching kinda dangling which as far as I can figure disables the section being patched. Yesterday I heard a nasty noise I couldn't get rid of but in the just touching setup the noise was completely removed leading me to realize there was something wrong with that section. So in summary not only can you isolate problems by doing this but also create new sounds removing sections from the signal chain.

Totally agree with your comments on the Human League. Such an amazing synth. How does it compare sound wise to the 100m system?
@AlexBallMusic
Жыл бұрын
The 100 has the best low pass filters out of any of the Roland Systems and the ring mod is particularly potent. The spring reverb really seals the deal too. However, the 100m also sounds superb, but has the best envelopes of any synth I've used. They give a snap that the 100 envelopes just don't have. Funnily enough, I actually borrowed 100m envelopes for a couple of the demos in this video to get the 100 to really zing. The 100m also wipes the floor with it in terms of features, functions, patch points, flexibility etc So you need both! 😜
