@@manfredwilliams9762 You're right. Skynyrd were perfect for the early evening slot and got the entire crowd moving but the Stones, despite the seriously long delay (caused by 10CC) were even better. The absolute business on the night. People get caught up in the technical aspects too much, this show rocked big time and had a perfect balance between musical ability and feel for the time and space they were playing in. It was a long long day but worth the wait once they hit the stage. There'd been a lot of talk in the weeks leading up to the show that it would be their last gig together, it obviously wasn't, but if it had of been it would have been a glorious way to bow out. Two and a half hours of truly great rock n roll.

There is an interview with Artimus Pyle (Skynyrd drummer at the time) done some years after this show where he admits to starting/perpetuating this myth. He chalked it up to youthful exuberance. He basically said they were great that day, "but nobody blows the Stones off the stage". I also want to say that the late Billy Powell recanted similar claims made by him in a famous interview (though I'm not 100% on that one).

I was there that day, and not far from the stage. The Stones in 1976 weren't afraid of anyone, brilliant as Lynyrd Skynyrd had been. Any booing that did occur was certainly not because of their set - which was great - but because they got on stage three hours late due to 10cc (who were crap by the way) messing around with film equipment. Don't believe everything you read.

Shambles, sounds like third rate pub rock.......Looks and sounds like they're bored stiff and just going through the motions... No wonder today everything is so highly polished and orchestrated, with session men behind the amps, and highly alert soundmen to switch off Keef when he's losing it for the umpteenth time. Just as for every band there ever was ,there's a time to close shop. These guys are so hooked on that stage rush and crowd adulation ,they'll do anything to keep it coming, even if they don't play half of it and have to put 40 people on that stage, and wriggle themselves in with the current pop faddies. Although their sponsors have yet to convince them to jam with Justin Bieber, which is a surprise.

I love simple rock and roll, dont get me wrong, Chuck Berry is truly awesome, but the Stones were basically washed up by 1972, and lived off their name after that, like Eric Clapton. The Stones were not real innovators like the Beatles or Jimi Hendrix..

As a teenager at that time, yes Aerosmith, Foghat, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, Skynyrd, Bowie, Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc were all on our turn tables. Yet we all flocked to each other's house to listen to the new stones records.....as they came out. As we did for all the bands....it never occurred to us that a band was washed up. All this comparison crap wasn't viewed as whom is better or worse....man those were the days.
