The Beatles first comp came out in the UK in '66 - A Collection of Beatles Oldies. And in 1970 we got the bizarre Hey Jude comp. The first 2 Stones comps had the album debut of great songs like 19th Nervous Breakdown, Honky Tonk Women, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Dandelion and others -- before that you can only get them on 45s. Thanks for the fun video.

Like most teenage kids in the UK in the early to mid sixties, the first exposure to bands such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones & others such as the Who, Kinks etc was through radio or limited TV Shows. Younger teenagers mostly acquired their first 45 RPM singles via gift tokens at Christmas or birthdays. Most of the bands back then we're seen as singles bands first & foremost & album sales only grew in the late sixties. Manfred Mann was a good example with many hit singles but their early albums I found to be underwhelming while bands such as Traffic had less success with single hits but their albums started from being quite desirable to blossoming into a fine exemplary albums. To this day the Best of Traffic is my favourite compilation. Back in the sixties the most popular compilation in the UK was The Best of the Beach Boys.

Very fun video. A quick check on the wiki discographies lists 29 Rolling Stones comps compared to 61 by the Beach Boys. One great UK only comp and one very successful was: Get Stoned (30 Greatest Hits) which came out in 1977 two years after Rolled Gold, covered most of the same ground, was TV advertised and hit the top ten UK album chart (no. 8). Being on the Arcade label which did TV comps it has never been rereleased or seen a CD issue which is a shame.

Hi Mazzy, as a few people are noting there's also More Hot Rocks (Big Hits and Fazed Cookies), which is one of their best comps in my opinion. It's great that it has some of their best early blues and R & B covers as well as solid coverage of the mid period psych stuff like Dandelion, We Love You, and Child of the Moon. And focuses on less overplayed tracks so it's a great listen without feeling like it's all the same classic rock radio territory.

Great as usual, sir. I had this 2 LP box set back in the early '80s called 'A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss' but foolishly sold it when I purged my vinyl collection at the end of that decade. I was glad to find it again as a mint Japanese pressing about ten years ago. 'High Tide...', 'Flowers' and 'Through The Past...' were all pretty much indispensable when they came out, but I never got that excited over 'Hot Rocks' or any of the comps that followed, with the notable exception of 'The London Years' - fantastic. I've long felt we need a box of Decca-era rarities as a complement to that set, but it's hard to imagine that happening as long as ABCKO has control over the catalogue...

Hey Mazzy great video. Yeah I think Elvis Presley might be the one to surpass the Stones on the number of compilation albums....maybe? I have a few Australian Stones comps. There was a 6LP self-titled boxed set covering the 'Decca/London Years' which curiously has a 'studio' version of the "Ya Ya's" live album. 1 LP is rarities using a similar cover to a Stones album that became collectable. It was sold with a black t-shirt which had the same silver title logo from the box which was too small and I sadly no longer have. I found a nice Reader's Digest/EMI 4LP box comp called "The Great Years", complete with booklet. Please note that EMI distributed Decca here in Australia in the 1960's or earlier up until the late 80's when Polygram took over. So EMI were releasing both Beatles and Stones records here at the same time.There was also a TV special LP called "Stones" as well as a gold covered reissue of "Rolled Gold" released in conjunction with Telmak here. One curious thing I noticed about 'Hot Rocks Volume 1" CD was that you could barely hear the signature riff on "Satisfaction" but the acoustic guitar was prominent. Someone screwed with the mixing there. 🙄 Lastly I have a Chinese version of the "40 Licks" double CD, except it has only has 36 tracks. Don't recall how I came to buy it but I think it was an eBay purchase. Ok that's enough from me. Cheers mate. 👍😎

You've got a very fuzzy memory, the Ya-Ya's included in the box was not a studio version, there was no rarities in the box with the t-shirt included. It was originally a French set btw.
@peterx1957
Жыл бұрын
@@rockrecordreport7136 what I meant by 'studio' version was that that particular LP within the box came with the same track listing as 'Ya Yas' but were all studio versions of the same tracks. I still have the set. I recall being annoyed thinking I had the same album duplicated in the set. 5 of the 6 included LP's have purple tinged individual portraits of the 5 original members with appropriate bios on the back cover, but the 6th IS a 'collectors edition' LP in my box and yes there originally WAS a black t-shirt. Maybe it was limited till stocks ran out? I don't know about it being 'French' but maybe Decca Australia based it on that? Who knows?

All the others, I didn't bother. Did buy More Hot Rocks of the Stones lesser songs. Did buy original US version of Metamorphosis and the UK version (which has, I think, 3 more tracks). Some of the more obscure songs, Sleepy City and Somethings Just Stick in Your Mind, I really like. In fact, someone did a cover of Somethings Just Stick in Your Mind, which is amazing to choose such an obscure song. The Flowers album is made up of a few songs left off the US Aftermath album. A couple of songs only released on the Flowers albums. I don't consider Flowers as a greatest hits album per se, just songs not released on US versions of Stones albums.

I'm a sucker for The Rolling Stones and buy everything put out I know about....reissues, comps, live albums, archival material, box sets, singles, etc. Anyway, here are the 18 comps I own (all are CDs): Big Hits (High Tide And Green Grass) Flowers Through The Past Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2) Hot Rocks 1964-1971 More Hot Rocks (Big Hits & Fazed Cookies) Made In The Shade Metamorphosis (2002 Hybrid SACD Remaster) Sucking In The Seventies Rewind 1971-1984 Singles Collection (The London Years) (I own the original 1989 3-CD Box Set. Didn't buy the remastered reissue that came in a digipak.) Jump Back (The Best Of The Rolling Stones '71-'93) Forty Licks Rarities 1971-2003 (This is a comp of both studio and live rarities with a couple remixes thrown in) Rolled Gold + (This was an expanded version of the original Rolled Gold. It's 2-CDs with 40 tracks. I had to import this one, I believe since wasn't sold in the U.S.) The Singles 1971-2006 Sampler (This 2011 CD is just a Promo Sampler compilation for the Singles Box Set of the same name that was released, which I also own. Glad I was fortunate enough to get the promo sampler.) The Very Best Of The Rolling Stones 1964-1971 (This 2011 compilation was originally a Walmart Exclusive in the U.S. I believe later, after a certain period of time, it became widely available.) GRRR! (5-CD Super Deluxe Edition Box Set) Honk (3-CD Deluxe Edition) Basically, the only ones I am missing are some of the older UK ones that were not available in the US and/or never reissued on CD. While not compilations, I own those 3 abkco singles collections box sets that were released in 2004/2005 covering their abkco years, 1963-1965, 1965-1967, and 1968-1971.
