I was enjoying the documentary and then when they showed her in that studio and the intro to the song started I sat up at attention. I've always wanted to know who this women was since I was a little boy. Like Darlene Love she gave the performance of her life on somebody else's record. I always felt from her vocals that this song was extremely personal for her; just a testament to how powerful the singing is. I'm a singer (in some ways in a very similar position to the women in the movie , albeit to a much lesser degree) and vocally I think this is one of the two or three greatest moments in the recorded history of rock music.

She actually lost her child due to this song, it was a deeply sad time. She was called out in the middle of the night to perform, she was like 5 months pregnant, had a cold and it was freezing. They, and I'm sure she herself, kept pushing for the perfect take, until her voice started cracking like this and they loved it. She eventually went home at dawn and miscarried. Shes an amazing woman. What documentary are these clips from?.

Yes, late one night she was awaken by a call that she needed to come to a recording studio to sing with a new band called "The Rolling something's". She came in her pajamas, curlers in her hair and very pregnant. She sang one take, and the band loved her. She agreed to a second take but only alone in the booth. That's the take that was used for the famous song. The rest is history. Later she miscarriaged her baby. She attributes her losing the baby to how she stressed during the song. Look in her eyes when she remembers with Mick the event. There's a special bond between them. Now you know the rest of the story.

you cannot dissociate this song (one of their best) from the Vietnam War .... the fact that the overwhelming emotion is carried by Merry Clayton is really fitting here ... a disproportionate number of African Americans ended up conscripted and shipped out there ; she carries that here so beautifully

In this Stones video (above) for Top of the Pops 1969, Jagger sings an amazing 'live vocal' over the backing track (the band are miming) with Merry's vocal not yet added/recorded to the song, Jagger sings all of Merry's part and has to catch his breath after it. Love Merry's vocal on the finished track though. Always make the hairs stand for me every time.
