This is exactly why LPL demonstrates the weaknesses of ordinary locks - to spur innovation and improvements just like this.

this is actually a step backwards. one of the hardest parts of picking a disk detainer lock is tensioning it properly. here bowley has effectively removed that obstacle by using a reverse sidebar design that effectively tensions itself. on top of that, because of the way a DD lock works, the false gates will have to be rather smooth and easy to escape for this thing to work at all.

This is a beautiful lock. I'd use it as my go to lock on a steel enforced door 💪🏻 I've got a kinda similar amateur blueprint and then watched the video 😂 It uses likewise mechanisms, except an idler, but designed differently. That is cool. What is the drill and pull resistance like? Traditional disc detainers are a bit vulnerable to pulling attacks
@hitnovak
Жыл бұрын
I believe drilling resistance should be pretty good, as most parts of the lock seem to be made of steel, and those made of brass appear to be well-protected inside the lock. Drilling the top part wouldn't really help unless you could get the entire locking bar out, and there are some hardened balls inside to stop you. Also since the front plate and the central part are both made of hardened steel, it will be pretty hard to get a pulling screw in. Not sure how hard it would be to snap the front plate off though, as the rest of that part appears to be much thinner. That being said, I think the original Bowley mechanism is still much more resistant to brute force attacks than this one, which is a shame as it doesn't fit most standard cylinder shapes quite as well as this one.

That's not too much of an issue considering the build quality and tolerances of the lock. It may not seem like much, but it's a fairly long and thick bar, and it would take considerable force to turn it past the unlock point. Remember, this lock is designed to prevent non-destructive opening. If you're going to use force, you'd probably need less to just pry the door open

Maybe you should use your newest key, the one with 2 bends, add an extra nub on each side of the key that goes out 90 degrees, and add in core. Use a reverse type of pin that opens backwards. Making it even harder to pick. To make too, but that would be truly unpickable I bet.

oh god, imagining this setup with twin forks. not only would it look supper cool it would also be that much harder to pick. though i think the entire challenge this was designed for is to have a standard cylinder that the buyer can install in existing padlocks and door handles.

Locks aren't designed to be unpickable. They're designed to buy you time and noise. That's it. The more time a thief needs to get into your home, and the more noise he has to make, the less desirable your house becomes to him. These lock picking experts on KZitem have specialized tools, a desk, a vice that holds the lock at a convenient angle, good lighting, comfortable conditions, and all the time in the world to pick a lock without fear of being shot or arrested. No thief (no matter how good they are at picking locks) is going to spend 45 minutes at your front door trying to pick a Rotasera when your neighbor has a home depot special KW1 that can be bumped open in 2 seconds. You online armchair analysts forget that the real world has far more real world considerations for thieves, beyond pickability. The Rotasera is FAR BEYOND overkill for residential locks. Even if this lock can be picked (nobody has done it yet) thieves would take one look at your front door, see "BOWLEY" printed on the cylinder face plate, and walk away. Even if they could pick it, just the fact that you have it on your door tells them that firearms, security systems, cameras, and large dogs probably live on the other side of that door, because people who install rotesera, multlock, and medeco locks on their front doors usually take security very seriously, and that goes far beyond lock choice. Simply put, just having this lock on your door is deterrent enough to make 99.9999% of thieves just walk away and not even bother trying.
@ARockRaider

@@dayvancowboi9135 i think the only "right tools" against any bowley lock for picking would have to be like a lishi key. specialized for that lock core and that core alone, even then they still puy security pins and false gates so it's still not a free ride. for a non pick attack, chansaw the wall next to the door, will be easier.
