As a young Turkish biomedical engineer who came to study live and work in Glasgow for 5 years now having become Glaswegian Aye, I've seen familiar faces those kindred folk who've been dealt a hand as such that they have to be like that, been to all the ins and outs of all the streets and roads of Glasgow, very magnetizing people, yes you see the streets the people and roughness but it's just Glasgow and it's people taking care of each other from whatever creed yada or Yoda you come from . Really the True Scots take care of everyone and each other, I have countless recollections of being helped and of helping others, it's deeply humane, banter, belter at the same time man, my deepest respects and loves to this beautiful country and her people.

I worked in Glasgow for many years helping people find homes. The problem is once they have been allocated a home, they have no way to manage. They often have no furniture, no way to set up payments for rent etc, no or little understanding of budgeting so often the tenancies don't work out. More support is required to ensure people can cope with the daily things we take for granted, like cooking, shopping, menu planning and getting along with neighbours

@@emcg.9655we help and support them in each and every way we can . I’ve been an addict for 30 plus years I was sleeping in a bin cupboards at the age of 16 due to an abusive parent.I came into recovery in 2019 with zero life skills I couldn’t cook I had absolutely no concept of bills money management how to actually properly look after myself including having boundaries n stuff . My self belief was shocking my self esteem and worth even worse. It’s been a long hard and very challenging process to be sat here in a clean home not using drugs paying bills and now eating most days . I’m about to start a development worker job and I’m involved with recovery community development in my own area (I’m not too far along the coast from Glasgow ). We have to be the change we want to see .My disgusting childhood had a major impact on who I became as a person and I’ve had to do and keep doing a lot of work on myself internally. Help support and Instil the belief in people that they can be someone else and hold their hand a wee bit for a while. As crazy as this might sound when you take an addict away from addiction all the stuff that created the problem still exists it’s the stuff behind the addiction that needs to be eradicated and that’s a super complex task as it’s gonna look different for each and every person. I really feel it for those trapped out there in active addiction and homelessness it’s a horrific place to be .My own town is strewn with broken people.I hope to make a difference in my new job even if I can help one person out of the not so merry go round I’ll go to my grave a happier person. Stuff like this isn’t all warm and shiny so it lacks proper investment from the government. People all messed up don’t look too good on a county or it’s leaders . We’ve had the discussion for years now about what to do and it seems to fall on deaf ears. I took a job in a building just around the corner from central about 10 years ago. I was there about a week and on my lunch break I headed down towards this McDonald’s, on the way outside a greggs I witnessed something that impacted me in a way so profoundly it still sticks with me, I lll never forget it. I came past a young guy probably early 20s max, it was November & absolutely freezing, the young man was uncontrollably crying, whaling, telling a young girl who had obviously stopped to help him that he couldn’t survive another night on the streets, he just simply couldn’t do it anymore, he was cold, starving, terrified. I’ve never seen such absolute helplessness in a human being before or since. I cried the rest of that lunch break and most of that day atleast. I took a week sick line and never went back. I’m in tears even writing this because the pain that young man was in is still so fresh in my mind. I pray for him and the rest of these poor people.

Installed steel security panels and doors in most of the schemes in and around Glasgow for years, done all over North Lanarkshire too, seen a few sights in those years but IMO the three worst places for working in etc were Barrowfield near ParkHead, Easterhouse and the No-1 Ferguslie Park, miss those days in that job. The homeless situation now in Glasgow is a disgrace, it's a shame Sturgeon or now that clown Humza don't walk through Glasgow and take in the mess instead of looking away like it doesn't exist, bloody disgrace. Mind doing all the security screens for the old wallpaper building at Robertson Street back around 1998 / 99 - Junkies were living in it for years, the day we went in after the police was a real eyeopener on the sheer amount of used needles, when the building was secure they still broke in most weeks, I still remember getting a callout on Christmas day as I was on standby. Fascinated by this one, Billy. It's where I live now and I work with some of the very vulnerable people of the city. The four corners, as well has having huge problems at the weekends and nightime, has been a focal point for child sexual exploitation in Glasgow. And it has also attracted some really unpleasant people from all over Scotland as well because of its reputation. However, I spoke to a senior cop last week and he had said to me that they were now noticing that a lot of the people who congregated around the four corners had now move elsewhere. And the place they had moved to was the area you were in where you saw people arguing with each other and getting moody near to the funfair. That's the area near to St Enoch's underground station. At weekends that place has now become popular with kids from all over the city to congregate, and it is causing police and social work a load of problems. Anyway, hope you enjoyed your visit.

My great great grandfather was a Glaswegian boilermaker who was born in Glasgow in about 1840 my name is Scottish for John - Ian - the surname I use is my Grandmother’s maiden name dad was illegitimate in 1927 - very unusual then! The rest of my ancestors come from my home town area. It is so sad that the statue is of somebody homeless. I’ve had 21 jobs since I was 13 - I just gave up after that.

Hi bill, this is typical britain at the moment, all the major cities have all got homeless and drug problems, its such a shame that our country has come to this and nobody knows what to do. In london its everywhere you go, in fact its getting worse. Good video bill, keep it up

That was quite respectful. I hope everyone in this videos is doing well. Hope you're doing okay too big yin. I'm always worried I'll end up homeless because of my bad mental health (mostly panic attacks - never violent or aggressive), I just think I'm dying when it happens. The amount of jobs I've been sacked from when they say "you didn't put down you have panic attacks when we hired you", just cause I had a bad one and had to sit down and regulate my breathing for ten minutes - and there was nowhere on the form to put panic attacks down, and nobody who'd realise panic attacks are different dependent on the person.

hope they get him & his dog a home. im sick of seeing people going straight into hotels for free after arriving illegally, whilst our own are going through hell! last week the home office confirmed they have outbid councils to buy up houses to home asylum seekers. our taxes given to foreigners again. utter disgrace.

There's a really good fish and chip shop under that overpass, or there used to be anyway. LOVE Glasgow. The people there are amazing. Being an American and not really being familiar with the money, I'd just hold out my hand with a handful of coins and shopkeepers would take what they needed. lol I trusted them and I'm 100% certain they didn't rip me off.

Yer very tuned in to the wylie ways. No body will starve in this city for sure. Ironically those that would steal yer teeth will at another time give ye the shirt off their back. The four corners was once a meeting place, there used to be a boots with a big clock and it was boots corner. Handy for train and bus. Now though night and day it's the first port of call for those looking to score. That means folk fae all over Glasgow bumping into each other and tempers can flair. It's a hard enough life on the streets without all that. Thanks for sharing

Well done Billy . I’ve travelled about UK a fair bit . Most cities are the same . People congregate at these corners for drugs or a friend that has drugs ,also opportunities are a stone throw away ie mugging vulnerable people act. Glasgow district council are shocking . There are at least 7 homeless hotels in heart of the City efficiently killing the City centre . Kids go into These hotels clean then die of overdose on street Valium etc . Again like every other big City . Keep up the good work palm

May sound odd, I know a lady who every Christmas and New Year would go to shops and buy food and sleeping bags to hand in. One worker for the homeless told her to keep it. If she couldn't do it year round don't take it at Christmas to make herself feel good. Although I could understand the sentiment from that worker I'm honestly disgusted with that attitude. I've no doubt if a homeless person had the opportunity of a new sleeping bag for them and friends as well as food they would take it. Workers need to check their attitude when they leave their own home
