The existence of the Gay class has always been amusing to me since it allows the phrase “seamen of the Gay Viking” to be used.

This class of ship was so called because it will fully engage in the interior redecoration of the enemies orifices and cavities. Nice torpedo, sailor.

It seems like they just wanted to reuse a bunch of names that they liked but could find a theme for them so they just put gay in front of them

The RN were still all Rum, Bum and Baccy I was told by an ex Chief Engineer of a Missile Boat in the 1980s once..... all in the finest tradition of the Service ..... of course.

It is an interesting way of naming small craft, somewhat along the lines of merchant shipping like the "Empresses" of Canadian Pacific. The "Gay-class" names today do now sound like a Marvel LGQBT superhero team on Disney+ -- the boats did make it into a 1950's WW2 war film on motor torpedo boats. 🙂

Worth remembering gay wasn't used to refer to homosexualty until around the 1950s

Yes & no on that one, certainly not commonly, but some of those combinations certainly carried interesting connotations even at that time

I love the old naming conventions and the change of language use, make it some times hilarious combinations . words that had inocent meaning suddenly became rude or weird. Like an instrument name that got a bit of same meaning as Gay only as insult. HMS Dreadnought looks like a powerfull name , till you read up what it actualy ment back in the day , a heavy duffle coat . used by sailors . for all atlantic weather conditions. You can see why this term might have gone out of fashion . Iam still looking for an HMS Colander. . well they could rename the Queen Elisabeth class as they do have some problems with their shafts and seals .
