This Ruddy Shelduck was filmed in the UK at Langford Lakes Nature Reserve in Wiltshire. Ruddy Shelducks are relatively rare visitors to the UK and there's much debate over where the birds seen in the UK have come from.
They mainly breed in south-eastern Europe and central Asia with many wintering in the Indian subcontinent. There are also small populations in north-west Africa and Ethiopia. If this Ruddy Shelduck has come from its Asian range, it’s travelled a long way to get here.
Another possibility is that it escaped from captivity here in the UK as Ruddy Shelducks are a popular species in wildfowl collections. Alternatively, it could have come across the North Sea from north-west or eastern Europe, where there are several feral populations. These are birds that were previously in captivity and are now wild.
Wherever it has come from, this beautiful duck was a highlight of my trip and a delight to see up-close.
