I've got a question for out of the trenches. Considering that the American Civil war had only ended 52 years before the US joined the Great War, did that cause any problems within or between the American divisions deployed in Europe? I would imagine that soldiers from the North and the South could have some issues fighting alongside each other after their fathers or their fathers' fathers fought each other in battle. Thanks everyone! Love the show!

In the Spanish-American War in the late 1890s, there were plenty of southern volunteers as far as I know. There’s still sectional divides to this day, but by WW1 southern states had reasserted control and influence at home and in the union. As far as I know, the divisions were mostly racial. With all that said, I am inferring based on different things I have learned about post Civil War society. I would love to know if there was instances of north-south divisions causing problems.

Even as late as WW2 there were incidents, such as a British band welcoming an American unit from the South with the song 'Marching Through Georgia', which unbeknownst to the Brits was a song the Union sung on Sherman's destructive march to the sea so they nearly caused a riot. Also, US troops were segregated until after WW2, but as for the common soldier, he really didn't care, especially since with the exception of certain divisions like the 23rd which were specifically designed to be drawn from the whole country, most men served in divisions built around National Guard infrastructure and thus served mostly with men from their own region.

The German Empire, despite its bluster, is cruisin' for a bruisin'. It's a shame in so many ways, that peace initiatives were not more potent because when final Allied victory came, the fallout was just a recipe for on-going disaster long into the future with even worse horrors to come. However, we don't know this back in late June 1918.

Rabih R That was just Pershing and one can see an ulterior motive in his comments. War ends with General Pershing in charge of the minor force, or war ends due to the efforts of the great General Pershing and his large American Army. @jamesmckenzie9551

Actually, it was quite the opposite. The French and British shared their hard learned lessons freely, they didn't want to waste manpower at this stage of the war. The American commanders however didn't take it on board, as much like the allied commanders in 1914, they didn't fully grasp just how destructive modern war was. Like the Germans said, "our fire didn't lower their morale", because the Americans didn't know yet just how deadly that firepower was. Sure, they had some grasp, but they were still finding their feet, and often paid the price.

For all those who are interested in the Middle Eastern theater of WWI, there is a terrific book out called "Lawrence in Arabia" by Scott Anderson. It follows five people who all played important roles in WWI: Chaim Weizmann (Jewish agronomist in Palestine), Dr. Major Kurt Prufer (German Intel officer), Jamal Pasha (Ottoman governor of Syria and part of the Young Turks triumvirate), Lt. Col. T. E. Lawrence (British liaison to Emir Faisal Ibn Hussein and the Arab Revolt), and Emir Faisal Ibn Hussein (as a son of King Hussein of Mecca, he was de facto leader of Arabic troops during the Arab Revolt of 1916-1918).

My father once said: "I wished we didn't have oil and gas!". Why? I asked. "All the problems we had and we have relates to it" he replied. Long live Azerbaijan! P.S. calling Azerbaijani Turks as Caucasian tatars is a bit a Soviet style. It was a strategy calling Turkish nations differently so that they do not unite. History showed that it was impossible. Azerbaijani Turks kept their traditions and didn't lose their identity, language and traditions.

Lets not forget, the US Army on the Western Front only began to make a real impact from mid-1918, but the US Navy was in the fight since May 1917. That was when the first American destroyers arrived in Queenstown in Ireland to aid the British in the war against the u-boats. They immediately went to work patrolling and escorting merchant convoys. In the following months more and more American destroyers, gunboats and armed yachts arrived. The Allied anti-submarine forces really needed this help. Meanwhile, American cruisers and eventually old battleships began to escort ocean convoys that summer. American destroyers even sank a U-boat(U-58) on their own in November 1917, and lost USS Jacob Jones to a torpedo in December. Meanwhile, four modern US dreadnoughts arrived in Scapa Flow in December 1917 to reinforce the Grand Fleet.

True, but we didn't get involved in that mess. By the time we entered the war, we were able to transport enough petroleum product to help get us through the war. This series and others by your lash-up outstanding. Word regarding Belleau Wood however. The 2nd U.S. Infantry Division what there... one brigade Army, one U.S. Marine... The 4th Marine Brigade was made up of the 5th and 6th Marine regiments. The brigades were assigned different areas... The Marines got Belleau Wood... Another brigade of Marines sent to France...but Pershing kept it occupied with support functions. You did show Dan Daly... U.S. Marine who had two Medals of Honor. . Marines also attached to various Army divisions to pick up skills, for example, heavy artillery. Also fair number of Marine officers served on higher Army staffs. While serving there, they were required to wear spurs... (Ceremony tossing those off ships taking them home after the war...) In the words of historian (General) S.L.A. Marshall... the Marines were "...a tiny raft of sea soldiers in a massive sea of army..." Still, a mention re Belleau Wood might be in order. -YP-

Also on this day, 28 June 1918, the fightings near the town of Coeuvres ended on the Western Front. After the Germans had been stopped 2 weeks ago by the French at the battle of Matz ( kzitem.info/news/bejne/q66LuKtte2WoqIY ), Ludendorff ordered the 7th Army to link with the 18th Army by attacking between the forests of Compiègne and Villers-Cotterets in the direction of Coeuvres, west of Soissons. souterrains.vestiges.free.fr/IMG/cache-500x636/attaque1918-500x636.jpg The Germans advanced a few kilometers but were quickly stopped the 14 June. Then, being constantly harassed by French artillery bombardments and counter-attacks from Mangin 10th Army, the Germans were completely exhausted. The French slowly pushed back the Germans, retook the lost ground and captured many prisonners and guns but at the price of around 35000 casualties. With this, on 28 June, Operation Gneisenau was definitely stopped and Compiègne saved.

Not sure how anyone can argue that the Battle of Belleau Wood should've never been fought considering that the Germans were advancing through that sector at the beginning of the Third Battle of the Aisne (which overlaps the Battle of Belleau Wood). 2ID and 3ID were sent to plug a hole in the line left by the retreating French 6th Army. At the beginning of June 1918, there was nothing between the American divisions and Paris.

QUESTIONS how would the Germans or for that matter the Ottomans get the oil to their home country? how did (all these) Germans get there? via Black sea and then what? In this context, what does Tatar mean? The main Azaris speak a "Turkic" language is all, I know Rock on Team Great War!

Is that soldier at 6:35 using a 1.59-inch breech-loading vickers q.f. gun AKA in BF1 as the AT rocket gun...are there any surviving examples?

Pershing's perception that the Allies were finished without promised major reinforcement is likely not a misleading perception. They would be close enough to that later in 1918 with many Americans on the line and manyyy more still building up.

Uhm, I'm pretty sure this will never be seen and may probably even be insignificant but could we get a WHO DID WHAT episode dealing with Oskar Dirlewanger?

Will you include the Turkish War of Independence to the series? I'm asking just out of curiosity.

Hey guys, great episode as always. I couldn't find the link to the Doughboys channel in the description, as Indy mentioned. Could you post it and advise? Thanks.

It's only just struck me that a 'Back to Bakku' T-Shrt in the Star Wars font would be perfect.

I may be old and my sight diminished but, could you consider adjusting the color pallet on your maps so I can clearly distinguish the Med from the land? All of the purples tend to run together. Maybe some bright blues or greens for water?

Dear The Great War Team, Do you consider publishing your maps, once the series is finished later this year? They are very nicely made and I cant think they could be valuable for teachers, students and lecturer. Furthermore, do you consider selling the maps physically, as large format print-outs on paper with some nice additional layout?

Hey indie do you think politicians had too much influence on the generals. Like did Generals on either side have to do an offensive that they knew would fail because the politicians ordered it.
