Sounds like a stable duma, this will definitely last 5 years!

Welp, this is gonna be a fun series to follow. This made me realized that I've forgotten to subscribe earlier (after seeing the videos on National Flags on Wikipedia, Putin, and Lenin) - I've now rectified that situation!

Just curious, why do you put independents in the middle of the chart rather than at the end?
@nojrants
11 ай бұрын
This is actually based on the order in which the deputies sat in the duma. The independents and national parties were originally going to be placed on the right, but that would require them to sit next to the xenophobic rightists who they vehemently hated, so it was arranged for them to be moved toward the center of the assembly.

@@nojrantswait a minute, is that why politics are called called left/right wing? Because they’d sit on opposite sides of the parliament? I guess that makes sense, I never thought of that before
@nojrants

@@tomtomtrent Yes that's where the terms originally came from. Specifically the terms emerged during the French Revolution, when supporters of the king positioned themselves on the right side of the National Assembly, while those opposed occupied the left side. From there "left" versus "right" wing evolved into general terms. If I remember correctly, the French Revolution is actually the origin or at least popularizer of a lot of important political descriptors, like "conservative" from those who wanted to conserve the monarchy and "reactionary" from the Thermidorian Reaction.

Question: why were the SRs against the reform at 1:40?
@nojrants
11 ай бұрын
Generally the SRs viewed the traditional communes as beneficial and something that could be used to build socialism, bypassing a transition into the capitalist mode of production, so the beginning of the communes' elimination was a major blow to SR ideology and morale. Conversely, the SDs tended to view the destruction of the communes as a necessary evil, as they believed Russia was/would transition to capitalism in order to create the conditions for socialism.

How many people voted in the election?
@nojrants
11 ай бұрын
It's difficult to find exact numbers for each Duma, but the first election is estimated at 20-25 million people. The second election I'd estimate at a similar but slightly lower number, while the third and fourth elections were far less for reasons we will see in the next video.

it can also be translated as "big ones" and "small ones", as that represented the scale of revolution and reforms suposed after it ever happens
