Watch the documentary project Russian Octopus. How the Kremlin Influences the World’ is available online on KZitem on 2+2 TV channel.
Why does the world still continue to deal with a dictator who is on the international wanted list, how does Russia circumvent sanctions, continue to fill the world with its propaganda, spread its own narratives, and win sympathisers in Europe? In search of answers to these questions, the author and host of the project Ruslan Sharipov visited Denmark, Germany, France, Slovakia, Finland, and Austria and talked to leading investigative journalists, researchers, experts, and high-ranking officials to find out how the Kremlin still influences the world, what mechanisms it uses, what pain points it targets, what levers of influence it uses, and how it turns culture into a weapon.
In particular, the project host visited the Russian House in Berlin, which continues to operate despite EU sanctions imposed after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, learned how Russia blackmailed the opening of a cultural centre in the heart of Paris, and why the offices of Rossotrudnichestvo in Ukraine were closed only 8 years after the illegal annexation of Crimea. In addition, the project reveals the mechanisms of influence of the Russian Orthodox Church, Cossack organisations, Russia's support for radical European parties and convenient politicians abroad, why they function and what dangers they pose.
