The S.S Kelpie was built on April 15, 1886 by the Elizamoine Shipping co. (Now Lemoyne Eastern Riverboat co.) in Saint Denis for $12,000.
On February 4, 1889, the Kelpie was assigned to the Blackwater-Saint Denis route. On May 11, 1899, The Steam Ship Kelpie’s passengers witnessed the Blackwater Massacre unfold on the Steam Ship Lourdes, the target of a heist initiated by the infamous Van Der Linde gang. Three years after the Massacre, the S.S Kelpie was the target of the Del Lobos. A shootout between lawmen and the Del Lobos occurred at the Blackwater port. The incident caused 11 people to lose their lives. The S.S Kelpie was refitted in 1904 with a new paint scheme. However, in 1911, the Kelpie was found beached on the Bayou Nwa shores. It remained there slowly rotting and listing to its left side until everything except the lower hull of the vessel rotted away by 1932.
