Great video! Clear and to the point. Using a saw was commonplace in forestry once they became widely available. Like you said, it makes for more efficient removal of chips in addition to allowing you to wedge from behind. Is it as fun? No. Safer? Yes. I’m excited to hear how the elm handle goes, would be cool to see a video on the process.

Yeah, the saw is king. I don’t care what anyone says. I’d rather be stuck in the woods with a capable saw than only an axe. I’ll film the handle process, no worries. Good job on your Big Log Challenge.

@@KevinsDisobedienceThanks! Yeah I always though it funny that people argue over their knives/machetes vs an axe yet never bring up how important a saw is. Nice billhook! Who makes that model?

I’ll be doing a vid on the billhook soon. Already shot it. Just have to edit. Ben sent it to me. It’s a biped.

Oh that's smart to have the first aid kit ready. Great to see you banking some timber for handle billets. One of the most satisfying thing us axe men can do is harvest our own timber and process it into lumber. This is actually perfect timing because someone just asked me about riving elm. If you are going to do that I'm very interested to hear how it rives since it doesn't have a great reputation for splitting. Good video sir. I'm itching to fell a tree with an axe. It's really bothering me. Just have to find the right circumstances.

I’ve felled and split elm with an axe twice before this one. It bucks alright, but splitting does suck. I might try splitting one billet onto blanks, but I will probably try something else for the others. Not sure yet.

Me too. Take at least a year to dry out. Elm is notorious for holding water.

I've read about using a saw for the bottom of the undercut but this is the first time I've seen anyone do it. It looks like it leaves a more precise stump and that technique definitely has a place if only for that reason. I hope it won't be a downer hear that I just broke my White/American elm handle yesterday but the mitigating factors are that it was quite thin, the grain wasn't perfect, and it did last for a while and survived a couple overstrikes. Also it was the nicest looking handle wood I've tried.

Yeah, I’ve used it a few times on the channel, but I never spoke on it. It serves two purposes: allows you to make a low stump and still keep the bottom flat, and helps remove chips more easily, especially on something stringy like elm. Sorry to hear about your handle. Yeah, there are so many factors with a handle break. Hard to know sometimes. We’ll see…

Unfortunately, if you want to go faster than 12mph you do have to put the seat belt on. Stupid regulator. I may buy another buckle and stick it in there 🤫

A lot. When I first got the Gomboy, I thought why would anyone want anything bigger. Then I got the BigBoy and thought, Why would anyone ever want to use the Gomboy. I still thought the Katana was too big and unnecessary; that is, until I tried it. Love the thing.
