5:05 I was in a similar situation coming from Asia to North America. I studied English but being in an English conversation requires practice, and everyone spoke much faster so I couldn't keep up. Luckily, I met a Latino who was at the same level of knowing the language as I was, so we were able to practice speaking to each other. The funny thing is all the teachers thought that he only spoke Spanish, so he was also hesitant about talking to them. Some of the teachers also somehow didn't understand that reading, writing, & listening to a foreign language are very different from talking in that language. Hence, I got a detention for "pretending" that I couldn't speak English b/c they knew that I was good at the other three aspects.

When he started school at 6 years old, World War 2 had ended only 1 year before. My Dad was only able to speak Dutch, which most people thought was German. It was Yankees Roger Marris that broke Ruth's single season home run record with 61 home runs. Mark McGuire broke Marris's record. Hank Aaron broke Ruth's all time carrer home run record. Barry Bonds later broke Aaron's carrer home rum record. Yes both McGuire and Barry Bonds were on steroids and there was no maybe about it. Both tested positive, but at the time MLB didn't have any clear rules against the use of performance enhancing drugs so their records stand. Arron was asked to be at the game when Bonds was going to break his record but he refused to attend becuse of Bonds use or performance enhancing drugs. Arron is still considered the true home run king by many fans becuase if it. Bonds was never voted into MLB Hall of Frame becuase of his use of steroids, even though at the time he was playing there was no set rule against it. He has never received the required number of votes to get in. Now he is no longer eligible to be in the Hall of Frame becuase players only have a certain number of years they are allowed to be eligible and once those number of years pass, they can no longer be eligible. Tom was the kid the teacher asked to show me around and help me adjust to the new routines. Tom also shared my first "chewing tobacco" experience with me. It turned out to be pipe tobacco instead, which was actually better tasting than traditional chaw. Tom and I played guitar together in high school, participated in band and many classes together and, even though we moved apart after high school, I considered him a solid friend to the day he passed.

This is a classic example of the "Coming of Age" genre. Usually it shows us a storied or magical time in the life of one or more American kid, and how it influenced the person they would grow up to become. Stand by me, Christmas Story, and October Sky are also good examples, but I think this one is my favorite just for the portrayal of Americana and what life as a kid was like before video games.

I'm obligated to mention that I have a 223 lb English Mastiff who thinks he's a wee lil' lap dog. I know that they can be trained to be vicious guard dogs, but mine and every other Mastiff I've ever met are the most gentle creatures you'll ever see.

The big dogs are almost always huge pushovers 😊. They guard because they love... It's the little dogs (or rather big dogs in compact bodies) that you have to watch out for... 😉

The 90s had some of the best kid movies ever. It’s like a lost genre. Live action kids comedies that actually do well at the box office and hold up for adult audiences as well.

I've seen this movie dozens of times, and I always knew Squints looked familiar, but I couldn't place him. He's Steve-O's childhood doppelganger! I love your observations!

The dark pad above the main paw: The carpal pad is a thick, cushioned pad located on the dog’s front legs, just above the paws, providing additional traction and stability when the dog is running or turning.

One of the greatest movies of my childhood hands down. Such a classic. As somebody else mentioned this and the mighty ducks were the go to movies for a generation of kids.

I was that one person that George described for a kid when I was younger. My best friend growing up was Gian Carlo and he moved here (Cali) from Peru. Dude spoke almost zero English. Kids used to pick on him when he first showed up because of that and he was a little thick around the waist. I made a point to reach out to him and protect him. As it turned out, he lived right across the street, so we hung out every day for hours. To make it related to this movie, Gian Carlo loved sports but wasn't an athlete. I was. He would help me practice and I became really good. He would also come to my games just to cheer me on... and eat the snack bar out of hot dogs and popcorn. Keep in mind, this isn't a high school story. This 10 year old kid would go to my Little League games to cheer for me. Amazing friendship. He stuck by me just as much as I stuck by him when he showed up.

George talking about missing fireworks makes me wanna go back home to the wamego firework show, that one, is insanely cool. Watching it on the highway was the coolest thing I’ve ever done.

Look up the annual Sandlot screening. It is held on the Lot itself, which was bought and is cared for cooperatively by the surrounding property owners, who love the movie and its legions of admirers, and features as Masters of Ceremonies those cast members as are available and willing. And yes, that means most of them.

Yes!! One of my favorite reactor duos watched my favorite baseball movie! You guys made my day! A few thoughts.... * S'mores are one of the greatest creations in the history of human civilization! Once you've had one, George, make it even better: replace the chocolate with a Reese's cup! * Everybody needs a friend like Benny....or needs to be a friend like Benny. * Speaking of Benny, the actor who plays older Benny at the end is the older brother of the actor who plays young Benny. EDIT: I typed this before I got to the end of the video. 😐 * Simone, as always, your intros give me life. 😊 Thank you for letting me enjoy this classic with you two awesome people!!

That nub nail on the dogs leg is called Dew Claw, and Simone was right it's purposes is to help dogs grip items while chewing, i. e. a doggie thumb.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!! Yall knocked one out of the park on this one. Ive seen this 100 times and I still watch it when it comes on. Childhood was such a simpler time in our lives, and most of us look back with fond memories. Wendy was played by Marlee Shelton. You might remember her as Diane in Sugar And Spice... the bank robbing cheerleaders. Very fun movie!

The Sandlot is a movie very near and dear to my heart. My entire childhood very closely resembled the childhood of these characters. I lived in a small town where we played baseball in a field just like The Sandlot. We had our rivals who lived on the top half of our street who went to a different school. During summer we swam at the local community pool. At night we played until the street lights turned on signaling time to go home. This movie brings back fond childhood memories.

To answer George's question in the intro, that's the carpal pad. Same as the main paw pads, but further back and basically are used as like brakes and shock absorbers. Kind of similar to human heels.

I saw this movie in the theater as a teenager and it holds a special place in my heart, like most baseball movies do, for some reason.
