I worked at The Standard Hotel in miami beach. I was the boutique manager. The Standard hotel has a Hamam and yoga classes. I worked with all the yoga instructors, and this is what I learned: They were ALL crazy. They all had deep issues. They taught peace and Zen in the classrooms but after class, they were Mean, angry women. They definitely did not practice what they preached. Most were vegans with a shit load of restrictions they placed upon themselves. They were not happy people. Lesson: be careful who you trust your spirituality with, be careful who you follow and admire. Be careful with who you trust to guide you.

The little I've heard already sounds like bad fanfic. The fact both Yogi and Jagat both had a core '3 day' event was interesting. 3 is a very significant number to humans for emphasis or linked to perfection, harmony and wisdom. Something I want to share that was missed in this documentary. The practices we went through in these yoga classes and retreats are designed to put you into a trance-like state where you are VERY suggestible. Only after a very intense 4 hour meditation and breathwork session do they upsell more expensive courses, and we are all basically "tripping" and feel called to do more and spend more... I met Guru Jagat 3 times and she does these "riffs" after she gets you into the trance-like, trippy state. The teachers can say anything they want and it will be planted into our brains as truth in those vulnerable moments. For those who have not been to these classes, it does feel amazing and you get addicted to the drug-like "high" you get from the practices.

It is called cultural appropriation. When the cool white kids pick it up, it is a thing. Act like it is not so accessible then everyone wants it. Next time something is appropriated from your culture, hire a publicist and make some bs about the exclusivity of your Uncles restaurant, and that it is a secret known only to a few. Hire celebrity look a likes, and jack up the prices and make up some bs about an ancient ritual passed down by some bs lineage and you’ll get rich. And probably write about it. Then it will be made into a movie.
@emmalinekim9822

@suryavajra I didn't mean to insinuate that their exact practices were what was trendy. I just noticed that generally, it was cool when influencers did yoga or wore henna and a bindi to Coachella, but it was uncool to be Indian. Just being indian was enough to be bullied. Luckily, I went to a private high school with a lot of Indian students, and they were able to celebrate their culture without being bullied! Holi was one of the biggest events the Indian students' organization put on, and it was so fun! I also joined my friend's Bollywood Dance Club, and we performed at assemblies! I was even able to take a modern India course and learn more about Indian history (although the woman who taught that class was pretty awful and was in favor of colonization...). One of my friends taught me more about the Salt March than that class did by sharing stories from his grandparents with me. My friends have grown into such kind and supportive adults, and I feel so lucky to have them in my life. I'm Korean American and experienced some bullying in middle school as well. I wonder if the spread of Kpop is causing similar situations for Korean kids in middle school where it's cool to listen to BTS and use Korean makeup, but it's uncool to actually be Korean. I really hope that's not the case, but middle school bullies are vicious.

Have a stepsister/half-sister technically but I keep hoping that we don't share our late father's DNA. She's the most pretentious, cultural appropriation repackaging itself as appRECIation 72 year old mix of... crap+kook+diversified portfolio of whatever Southeast Asian real estate her and the Mr could capitalize on after Vietnam ending. Each kid got a different cultural immersion based on where they lived when they had them so that one does Balinese dance, the next one he has some kind of Myanmar's Best Peace Fighting? The oldest is a Hong Kong trained chef, there's a girl who was living in India with her same sex partner- one of their super MAGA cousins found her online,outed her on FB, so tawdry. Katie used to send my brothers and I the most cheaply produced little outfits as kids and her son who is our age accidentally let slip that those were what the orphans wear in Hong Kong, or the kids whose parents are bad and give them up... Now our Katie is all about yoga with her teen granddaughters and her Fitbit. I wonder if she gave herself a new name also? Hmm.. if you're over age 25, be Kate or Kathryn. Katie's trying too hard after that unless you have the perky thing that Katie from Good morning America hates being described with!

@Cody Barry nailed it! Cults thrive on their big annual events... I was always the most sleep deprived/exhausted from everything going on at the annual MLM conferences. Cults make tons of money at such events and use them to recruit others ("bring a friend!"). Cults also use the emotional manipulation tactic of telling people if they don't make it to an event, they aren't serious about their business/spiritual practice/beliefs and everyone else will know they aren't serious, too. Honestly, it makes sense they believe this given the rest of their teachings. Like the whole "work ethic" bit. Life isn't going you way? You have money problems? @rebekahdavis5935

Yes it is disturbing just how MANY gurus, spiritual teachers and religions cults like christian fundamentalists find ways to excuse pedophilia and predatorism. From old school teachers that thought it was their duty to teach young boys sexually even if they are not homosexual, there were times when this was normalized in both greek and roman culture, to law of attraction believing that you invite EVERY thing that happens to you into your life at some level INCLUDING being SAd as a child to ALLLLLLLLL of the christian cults over the years and to present day that will ALWAYS blame the woman when she is beat or raped and they don't even acknowledge the abuse that happens to children but they are oh so ready and concerned to forgive the pastor predator, screw the victim HE needs our prayers. Like in the Duggar's cult of Gothard... a pedo/predator who was never married and never had kids but is FOR SURE the guy to listen to on how to treat women and raise a family. These are communities created by abusive people to excuse their unbalanced power dynamic and ALLOW them to abuse and get away with it. It's almost always the same basic fundamentals and it's VERY convenient if you can convince people and yourself that this is what GOD wants. It breaks my heart how many women and children are born into these sex slave christian fundamentalist cults and suffer for years and years sometimes their whole life with no help and almost ZERO access to the outside world. Look how easily and quickly anna duggar would put her children RIGHT back in with a pedo KNOWING that about him. So many of these mothers WILL NOT protect their children and their churches encourage them to stay in horrible situations. It's absolutely SICK AND DISGUSTING

What is wild to me is that there are almost endless forms of yoga, breath work and meditation- and somehow people are still getting wrapped up in the teachings of self-involved gurus. I’ve wandered into classes, really enjoyed and benefited from the practices, and wandered right back out the second anyone started encouraging harmful modes of thinking(greed/idolization of one person), were openly anti-science(encouraging people to get off their meds/ignoring health guidelines), or when people started having dramatic spiritual experiences(I thought we all had an experience seeing someone pretend to be incredibly inebriated, was annoyed and avoided that behavior- but maybe it’s not such a universal experience…). Because if I saw someone having an “awakening” like at the start of the video I’d feel like everyone around me was just as “fake” as the kid holding a nonalcoholic piña colada and tripping over their own feet at a party. Spiritual abuse ruins lives- if you feel the need to be guided, set up boundaries and study high control groups before going all in. Protect yourself and those around you by being cautious, asking questions and not isolating yourself.

I went to a Guru Jagat class at Yoga West years ago, I was never drawn to her. She seemed like a young soul and obviously a megalomaniac. Kundalini practices can be really incredible, as any kriya practice. I took the 200-hour Kundalini Teacher training, founded by Bhajan, and honestly felt most of the practices were overstimulating. I heard this was by design because a lot of their early disciples were former drug addicts and addicted to the rush. Radiant Child Yoga, taught by a female yogi, is a fabulous, very gentle approach to Kundalini Yoga as there are many others. It is unfortunate that these people taint wonderful practices. My experience with yoga in Los Angeles, as I have over 900 hours of yoga training and have taught both adults and children, is that many "teachers" are megalomaniacs and don't possess any real self-awareness. Yoga as a practice is an incredible journey that should only bring you more empowerment. If someone is trying to take your power or needs to be in the spotlight, they aren't practicing yoga.

As for me, I was hooked in by a good deal on leggings then quickly wanted to cancel the membership, but the process to cancel was so long and drawn out, and I swear to God every page I went to was like, " are you *sure* you wanna cancel?! You can just skip a month and continue?!" Like NO fuck off I want to CANCEL it. Then oddly enough the next month I just had a weird feeling and thought perhaps I should check it out and make sure it's actually cancelled so it doesn't charge my bank account. And low and behold, for some reason my subscription was STILL active, then I had to go through all the red tape again just to cancel. So yeah, not totally dishonest or scammy but I'm sure a lot of women don't even give it a second thought. It totals $840+ a year just for athleisure clothing and yoga mats lol. It all seems like a good deal until you really think about it

I pointed out how it was good enough to charge each month but not to give me a product and I keep getting sent around to a “higher management”. When I was younger, and let's not sugarcoat it stupider, I was trying to figure out how to fit into the world. This lead me to reading all those self help books. I found one person that I followed like their word was gospel. They were talking about their connects with Pudjet. It was going to a book event after a release, I realized what it really was and how it was not about growth of the readers but that of the person's pockets. Also, heard about Pudjet's thoughts and noped right off. Come to find out, fitting in meant going to doctors and treating my mental health.

I worked at a large and popular yoga retreat center from 2017-2020 and Guru Jagat was one of the presenters. This kind of cultural appropriation and cultish thinking was definitely present in many of the presenters invited to speak, and their audiences that paid thousands of dollars to attend. Interestingly, the director of the programming department (who decides the presenters that are invited to speak and lead conferences) used to work for Alicia Keys...

It's so conflicting because I have experienced my own awakening through meditation and breath work and fully believe in metaphysical practice. That being said, I do notice some weirdness around the spiritual community- it's almost like a false light. The celebs/influencers who seem super invested in sharing their spiritual knowledge always seem to get caught up in the fame and fortune.I almost wonder if its a bit of a trap in that way.. Like the old saying, with great power comes great responsibility. It's easy to get carried away when you tap into that kind of whatever it is. This video is a cautionary tale for the naiive seeker. The Way is true, even though faulty signposts misdirect millions. Australian-born, I became a Sikh in 1989 and have never been associated with the Yogi Bhajan movement. Before that, I practiced meditation and yoga asanas for 15 years. Both are profound life-changing practices that should never cost a penny except one's time and dedication. Just to be clear, yoga has never been a part of Sikhism despite them being yoked together by Yogi Bhajan. By chance, I met him in India on one occasion as delegates at a Sikh sacred music event. YB showed little interest in someone half his age who had independently found his way to the way of life he was born into. No words of encouragement, respect or even friendliness. That told me all I needed to know about the man. One can't help feeling for those westerners who joined his movement. Final point: Sikhism had a lineage of 10 gurus and the last, Guru Gobind Singh designated that the Sikh holy scripture become the 11th Guru which is the central focus of the Sikh faith, a gigantic book of poetry set to Indian classical ragas. That is the yoga of the Sikhs, poetry and music and applying simple principles to daily life. Clearly Yogi Bajan has muddied the waters for both Sikhism and yoga, two honourable spiritual traditions where the word 'Guru' is held in the highest regard.

I've been in four cults over several years and when I finally came out of it I realised it's the same script but different cast. I'm still recovering. It was so subtle I never saw it coming, like one abusive relationship after another, until one day I saw everything for what it was. I learnt that even with romantic relationships, if you don't take time to heal and be okay, your trauma will lead you to the same abuse in a different person until the day you take time out to begin inner work.

Not to body shamee or anything but right before the narrator of the video said she was a regular (even up to 5 times a day) on postmates. I said there’s no way: with that level of meditation, yoga, fasting & type of diet (P foods, homegrown or natural grown etc etc foods which I find ridiculous ) could she be that weight. I knew she was scamming just by her body size. I say this because I do regular fasts, occasional exercise (running mostly), diet and try to be healthy even with things I read or consume (other than eating) and the body actually naturally responds. I’m in no group or anything just a desire to do and be well especially that I’ve been on the “plumpier” side before and those were some of my worst years!

Part of it is that a kundalini class is not really an active exercise-type form of yoga. It’s a lot of breathing and repetitive movements with your arms while sitting. If anyone goes by the name of "Guru" - run. Real wisdom always goes hand-in-hand with true humility. The recognition that you are not elevated above anyone else and that you have your own myriad of sin, struggle and faults. The entire world of yoga is wrapped up in self elevation, manifesting all of your dreams, with self at the centre. Looking down at people and using terms like "low vibration" or "murky aura" to describe anyone that disagrees with your views. It's a toxic world devoid of true love and full of hypocrisy.

Hold up - Yogi Bhajan was not the founder of Kundalini, it is actually the oldest of all religions. The main line of it goes back unbroken to the fertility cults of Mesopotamia and Ur. That being said, it has undergone profound transformations, development and branching off with many key teachers and texts. If you are doing real Kundalini in an authentic lineage, it is very strengthening and empowering. Once you know what the practice is, you can just just basically practice on your own and go very far. As far as teachers go, do not ignore any red flags. If something a teacher is saying or doing seems off, or wrong, or false, it probably is. As a practice, it also goes well with other practices- Im not convinced it will be enough on its own.

My faith teaches the concept of good inclination and evil inclination which comes only from our free will. The Satan is actually an agent of God to test humanity’s evil inclination while God tests our good inclination. It is wholly up to us to choose which inclination to give into and whatever consequences that come of it(good or bad) is to be seen as both a blessing and a lesson; as both good and bad are god given. It’s only Christianity that took this concept and twisted it to blame “the devil” for one’s own choices and avoid accountability altogether.
