I think the wedding should have been a dream for both of them, it would have been funny to have 2 weddings, one from Tony and a different one from Jeannie. That way, it would have kept the spice of the show and satisfied the execs. But at the same time, maybe ending the show was at the right time for Tony and Jeannie. I think people have better memories of shows when it isn’t beaten up and continued on with actors that definitely want out of the series.

I like your idea a lot!! I also think, perhaps, the execs wanted to have the show cancelled. With ratings as good as they were, I really can’t imagine why. However, they had to have known with having Jeannie and Tony marry would cause audience dislikes, thus, a perfect excuse for the execs to rid them of the show without revealing their honest desire to to cancel it . The execs got to blame ratings and had no responsibilities blamed upon themselves. Rather disgusting execs if this was true. Ps I always LOVED Jeannie’s ( Barbara Eden) blonde hair blue eyes!! I’m happy they didn’t make her color her hair or wear a wig to make her brunette. Blonde hair and blue eyes are ALWAYS gorgeous in my opinion. Blued- eyed people are so fortunate! I think! Plus, those two traits have been disappearing . Brown hair; black hair; brown eyes are way more higher in numbers today. It’s just no where near the beauty blonde/blue people hold.

I don’t think the marriage plot line doomed the show. It was on it’s last legs and the marriage was an attempt at reviving interest. Barbra eden showed many young men growing up her great beauty and abilities to act any part .despite a son she had was going through rough times and had taken his life...Larry Hagman was a talent 👏 he had started out in a movie with Henry Fonda in the movie Fail Safe .fonda played the president in making a decision to drop two Megaton bombs on his country because two fighter pilots didn't lost communication with the white house and thought they were sent to destroy Moscow as a suicide mission. .Larry Hagman played a Russian translation expert for the president. ...since then and other roles he's playing, I dream of Jeanie that was a 180 in his career... then Dallas that made him a true star . Both were and should be honored with achievement awards. God bless the late Larry Hagman. And God bless Barbra Eden for her acting as well as strength in losing her son 🙏 👏. Many shows do have characters marry when they are on the way out and so whether or not having lead characters marry in some instances compared to others may not make a difference.

Before the marriage of Jeannie and Tony the premise was about keeping Jeannie's existence a secret. After their engagement the premise changed to keeping her identity as a genie secret.

@@patmischel6883 depending on which tales you follow, genies have rules that control their conduct. The show played fast and loose with those rules, mainly with Jeannie calling Major Nelson "master" but it mostly ended there. She frequently disobeyed him, something that a genie from the legends could not do, but those genies could twist their masters' words when granting a wish so that what was received wasn't what was wished for. Kind of like that episode of Twilight Zone where the man wishes to be the leader of a modern nation and the genie turns him into Hitler.

I was a child when these were aired in the UK. I don't remember the wedding season. maybe we didn't get it here but Im glad I didn't see it. I think for some people ,romantic TV (whether comedy or serious) is interesting in as much as you are never quite sure if that how it ends. So to be shown an ending, leaves nothing left to wonder about.

The execs knew what they were doing despite the popularity of the show it was time. 5 seasons is not too shabby- Jackie Gleason in an interview stated he canceled "The Honymooners" after one season so that the show would go out on a high note. The show is as popular & relevant even with today's audiences!

TELL THE TRUTH : The show would have ended anyway, even if they never got married. How many more years could fans continue to accept the show's premise of Tony as a childless bachelor - especially as he began to age? The same goes for Jeannie: an old genie ?? Why doesn't she just use her powers to look or stay young and beautiful ? Hey, nothing lasts forever people ! Their marriage was the perfect ending for their fairy-tale story -- and for the show !

That’s unfortunately what happens in storylines like that. After watching years and years of the cat and mouse chase, there’s not much else left to the story once the main characters get married. The same thing happened to The Nanny on CBS once she married her boss, the show only lasted one more season. On another series on the Hallmark channel called When Calls the Heart, they finally let the main characters get married after five seasons of them denying their feelings, eventually dating and getting engaged and then married. They immediately turned around and killed the husband off right after they got back from their honeymoon. It’s like marriage doesn’t sell stories in Hollywood.

Sidney Sheldon was offered to produce Bewitched when production started in 1963, but he turned it down to continue writing for The Patty Duke Show and he was guaranteed to do a show for Screen Gems (a subsidiary of Columbia). On May 20, 1964, The Brass Bottle was released, and Sidney Sheldon liked the movie, he liked it so much, that he began to write a script for it, and changing a male Genie to a female Genie. Furthermore, the script was completed months before the first episode of Bewitched was aired on ABC in September that same year. The pilot was filmed on December 2-4, 1964. Furthermore, episodes 2-11 of Season 1 were completed in January and February of 1965 (extra close-up shots were filmed June of the same year), the speed of production was to get as much episodes completed because of Barbara's pregnancy. Production continued in October of that same year. In an interview, Larry was asked on why he drank on set of both I Dream of Jeannie and Dallas. He stated that, "it was for celebration, to know that I finally made it," " Acting had gotten easier, and me drinking gave me another thing to overcome so that I could act well."

The writing inaccuaracies in the show were plentiful. I would need a full page in this comment section to list them all. I will say that Jeannie claimed to be trapped in that bottle for 2000 years but throughout the show she claims to know many historical figures who were alive during that time. The show had it's moments but in general the writing was atrocious.

I think they could have kept the series alive if they portrayed it like a real marriage. Jeanie can't stay naive for ever. That's what killed Mork & Mindy. It wasn't Mork marrying Mindy, it's that they didn't treat it like a real marriage.

You are so correct. It's a way for them not to take responsibility for coming up with good writing. There were several "mistakes" /lost opportunities in this show. They could have developed more family members, explored Jeannie's world, let Jeannie's character grow....

The wedding didn't ruin the show ... it finished it. There IS a difference. I can grok Eden and the rest didn't want to finish anything, but a story has a beginning, a middle ... AND an end, and I Dream Of Genie was, ultimately, a story. Jeanie may not have been human, but she WAS a person who more than earned her happy ending, and Major Nelson was a man, living with a woman who loved him and loving her back. Especially given the 50's sensibilities shaping the storyline, marriage was not simply inevitable, it was the goal all along. Eden and Hagman played their roles to perfection, including, imho ... the perfect finale.

Love the topic. But Darren was "red-blooded", not "blue-blooded" (old money rich). Samantha, unlike Jeannie, knew cultural norms, but her mother and other relatives didn't, or didn't care. Her character was more nuanced than the "fish out of water" meme--she was an "admirable coper", coping with tricky situations all the time.

With the 1960's being the start of the "free sex" generation moving away from couples being married and having a house with a white fence around it and kids as the norm of society. The marriage happening on I Dream Of Jeannie and the end of a playboy type main character would make it out touch with the way a large portion of society was starting to live in the 1960's that still continues today with a number of people having one night stands instead of being in a committed relationship or friendships with benefits. Marriage is still a turn off to some people these days long after the 1960's.
