I think you're very brave for saying you weren't trained and don't know. You're even braver for searching and continually growing 👍

I love your content! Would you be willing to do a video on teaching morphology? I’d love to see your approach, lesson sequence, and where in your day you teach it. Thank you!!

@@msrachelvincent Thank you! It’s hard to find whole group lessons in action. Most of what I’m finding are invention examples but it’s good for all kids! Do you teach it within your reading workshop or separately?

Thank you for sharing. I found Sold a Story fascinating. I also felt it confirmed my misgivings as well.

Really fantastic video. Thank you. My district started implementing the science of reading in K-3. I took the training and then moved up to 4-5 and have been feeling like I’m missing important phonics pieces. We have lots of autonomy over our instructional curriculum but that is a double edged sword. We also have MyView textbooks which I like okay. I sort of always struggle with the best way to fit in all the reading components when our time is already short. Again, thank you.

Glad it was helpful! We have a lot of autonomy as well and I agree, it's definitely a double edged sword!

I would love your help. I'm teaching 4th grade ELA for the first time, and I am SO lost. I don't even know how to lesson plan when it comes to ELA and we have no instructional coaches this year. 😢

Oh that's so tough. I would recommend following Jennifer Findley on social media and Bridging Literacy on KZitem. They are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to ELA in upper elementary. Start with your state standards and curriculum, so you know what you're supposed to be teaching.

Honestly, it's a little overwhelming. . . A firehose of information that was difficult to take in as an upper grade level teacher. My 2 cents.

Our district is split - some schools do Lucy Calkins and some follow just the Fountas & Pinnell approach. My school is mostly F&P but we have a lot of leeway with how we teach in our classrooms.

@@msrachelvincent That's good that you have a lot of leeway! Do you have any supplemental resources you recommend for 4th grade reading/writing teachers?

Sold A Story definitely presents some good information, but the presenter is a reporter and not an educator. Please read the education reports for yourself. She does not accurately represent all of the data and in fact, completely gets it wrong in many areas. Everyone has an agenda and what is best for kids is rarely at the center, despite how well they sell their position. The Sold a Story reminds those of us that have forgotten the importance of phonics for young learners...or those older kids that still need help with phonics. It is only a part of the story though, so please read the reports and know the whole story, not one well spoken side of it. :) Best of luck!!

Yes, definitely. However, it helped me to realize why I felt I wasn't a good reading teacher and what components were missing from my instruction. It validated what I had thought all along about some of these reading programs.
