Mine is a large print version. I sent it in to have a genuine leather cover put on. I had the crappy bonded leather. The regular edition comes in a leather option but not the large print. I find this an elegant Bible and use it daily in my morning reading devotionals. My study Bible is a Nelson 2.0 and also a large print.

Thanks for commenting. It is a nice Bible. If Oxford wanted advice from me, I'd have them put all the NKJV translation notes back in, use paper with higher opacity, and make a black ink option available. But I'm sure they know their market better than I do!

I don’t know if I’ve commented on this review, but your lighting and presentation is just an incredible asset to the Bible’s reviewed. The NKJV is such a understated translation. I do wish more bible colleges would use this translation when teaching. But so many are attached to the critical text , that they are missing an opportunity to promote biblical literacy with a well written translation. Great Review Grant. Really enjoyed all the reviews during our Covid nightmare. Thank you for blessing us.

I have a 1989 NKJV Scofield Study Bible by Nelson. Even though it is thumb indexed, I needed to add larger tabs for personal ease of use. It also has the center column reference and is what I refer to as almost line matched in that the reverse side printing is barely off. The inside of the Bible is holding together well for me, even with my excessive highlighting and underlining. The cover though is another story. It says genuine leather on the inside, but I suspect it is perhaps ironed calfskin? The spine is cracked as well as the edges of the cover but I don't care. I still use it almost daily and continue to find new things to highlight or make very short notes about in the not too generous margins. I didn't write down the purchase date, but since I was saved in February 1988, I would guess I bought it in the early 90's. It is very used and well loved and though Nelson would probably rebind it for me, I prefer to keep it just the way it is. I have no children to pass it down to, so it will likely end up in the trash upon my death, unless Jesus lets me take it with me!

Good job man. Looks like a pretty good font, and I like the font in my old thrift store Scofield a lot it has nice boldness. Hey that’s a very interesting translation comparison chart you made, with my limited research I agree with it a lot. Although I get the feeling the kjv translators desired a more literal interpretation in their renderings over the nkjv dudes, I’m not for sure on that as my knowledge on the Greek is quite limited.
@RGrantJones

Thanks, Griffith Sharp! In terms of "literalness" -- at least the way I use the term -- the two are very close, at least in the New Testament. People sometimes complain about the NKJV because the translators used more modern lexicons.

Thank you for your video, I'm wanting to move to the NKJV from the KJV. my current is the New Scofield Study Bible 1967. one of my concerns watching your video would be the missing foot notes (translation for "cheat" as an example). I'm not very good at research but I want to be as accurate as possible when I deliver a message. I have to use reading glasses so a larger font will help, don't mind the red print. Thanks for your response and God Bless.

I think having all the textual and translation notes is important too. I wish all NKJV editions included them all, but some are like this New Scofield. One NKJV study Bible I'm fairly sure has all the notes is the MacArthur Study Bible. Nelson's NKJV Study Bible does also. If you're interested in a reference Bible without study notes, the Nelson Single-Column Reference Bible might be a good choice. It has all the textual and translation notes. I reviewed a hardback last year: kzitem.info/news/bejne/umdrqHqBiaZqe2U&t . Thank you for your service! Air Force here.

Excellent vid as always. I’ve just ordered this (I had the horrible zip version). Originally I ordered the black leather but changed my mind for this one. I also too the liberty of screen shooting your bible literal chart - I always thought the NKJV was supposed to be easier to read than its parent KJV? Still I’m cool with the AV. I think this bible is a neat choice for a first bible gift to those yet to walk the path
@RGrantJones
5 жыл бұрын
I hope you like it. It's also good to hear that it's still available. I think the KJV is considered harder to read than the NKJV because of the KJV's archaic pronouns and verb endings (which don't trouble me in the least), and its sometimes puzzling vocabulary. When it comes to 'literalness', the way I score it at least, they're very close.
@jamesmackenzie1336
5 жыл бұрын
That’s what confuses me on the chart - you have the NKJV as more literal than the KJV, ESV and NASB. I just noticed these things as I looked at bible again. The B is missing and you know how we are with our bible language motifs and abbreviations!😉 Sorry to seem so pedantic but you also don’t have the NLT which is should be there given that it’s one of the main players?
@RGrantJones
5 жыл бұрын
@@jamesmackenzie1336 All I can say regarding the order of translations is, that's the way they score. The difference between the NKJV and the KJV is very small. I may have dropped the B from NASB to save space, since I had to add a two digit year to distinguish the '77 from the '95. There is a key to the acronyms. From what I've seen of it, the NLT is probably too difficult to score using my method. It would be well to the right of the JB.

I think it depends on how rough you are with it. Also, not all bonded leathers are created equal. Anecdotally, I have an NASB single-column reference in bonded leather, purchased in 1989. That cover looks new. My RSV Harper Study Bible's cover, bought around the same time, is also in great shape. But the cover of my old (mid 1980s) NIV New Testament, which spent a lot of time in pockets, backpacks, and briefcases, is missing leather from around the edges. (I think it made a brief appearance in the video about Ruth Walk's RSV New Testament.)

@@Airik1111bibles - I like the cover and the binding. But LCBP put a good cover on some poorly printed paper there. It's so old, no one may be interested in it now, but I may show it some day just to give people an idea of how bad print non-uniformity can be, and to encourage them to flip through a new Bible when it arrives to look for sections of very faint print.

I just watched your recent KJV III review, and I agree with you about the layout (verse-by-verse with the references along the gutter and outer margin). This red might be better here, but it's still difficult for me to read. That, the opacity, and the fact that the NKJV translation notes are missing keep me from loving this Bible. But overall it is excellent quality for the price.
