The key to a charge was the impact caused when a fast-moving object hit a slow or stationary object. Control was far more important than speed or greater numbers. Charges could win a battle but could also end in disaster. Cavalry attacks at the gallop were therefore quite rare. The development of modern artillery, rifles and machine-guns restricted the use of cavalry charges.
