I remember that documentary years ago. They renamed it on that web site I guess but I remember it was BBC heroes and villains. I loved that it was an episodic show of all different characters in history. My number one most favourite history documentary is Andrew Marr history of the world. It’s fantastic that it gives you the big picture and how one thing leads to another and then it’s history. Check it out you won’t be disappointed.

2:49 The story of how Zeno saved Constantinople is possibly worthy of it's own video. Basically the Theodosian walls, which had taken decades to complete were damaged by an Earthquake and the Citizens were like "oh fuck, and the Huns are on their way!" So the Emperor delegates Zeno, was was like, brand new in his job, to fix it. Zeno cleverly goes down to the Hippodrome and dares all the highly competitive chariot teams to take a section and repair it faster than their rivals. So they all go out and gather their fans, clearly the team with the most fans will get it done faster. Months later, Attila arrives at Constantinople expecting conveniently breached walls and finds they've been repaired, and strengthened thanks to the late Classical equivalent of soccer hooligans.

Anybody who has ever played a Crusader Kings game will know just how much of a handicap early inheritance laws are, and that's one area where the game is 100% historically accurate. It was an unholy mess that not only caused the breakup of empires like the Huns' or later on the Mongols' but also may have been one of the driving forces behind the viking raids since a population boom in scandinavia left a whole lot of younger sons with no inheritance looking for alternative sources of income overseas...

@@GaldirEonai I think it's because the rule of such empires were very decentralized, thus things inevitably fell apart. Basically only the Persians figured out how to rule highly decentralized, very large empires. Also, the Mongols and Huns mostly conquered large swaths of empty land. Empty land can't exactly fight back nor pay taxes. A lot of resources are required to occupy distant lands and the vast emptyness in between made that expensive. E.g. Attila couldn't afford to pay his armies with just the resources in his empire...because his empire was sparsely populated by just a few poor people...and he killed or drove off the rest. The Persian Empire contained 25% of the entire global population. Which is why it's the biggest empire in human history. But, that meant almost infinite resources to hold things together.

Flavius Aetius wasn't nerfed. He was assassinated by Valentinian and Heraclius. They, in turn, were killed by Aetius's friends - and the soldiers present in that killing did nothing to save the emperor, for they had been faithful followers of Aetius. First found out about this in the AoE2 Wiki, BTW, then read the Wikipedia entry on Flavius Aetius. EDIT: Upon further reading, Aetius really was nerfed in Atilla's second invasion. He could only muster up a small force and use Guerilla tactics to slow Atilla down because his Germanic allies didn't want to fight far from home. The assassination comes after Atilla.

Great video and all, but why do you show Denmark and southern Sweden as part of the Hunnic Empire at 5:42 ? Apparently there’s a fringe theory that the Huns had some presence there based on Hunnic-sounding names of certain chieftains and (wait for it...) the existence of plain gold rings in Scandinavia, but that’s just from one obscure Norwegian author. It seems you just copied the map from a Deviant Art post ( www.deviantart.com/sharklord1/art/Hunnic-Empire-452-A-D-630139058 ) but that doesn’t really excuse this.

Actually that’s the actor for Sandor Clegane, but other than that this video is perfect

You forgot about the fact that the only reason Attila even agreed to meet with Pope Leo is that allegedly Attila saw a massive figure standing behind Leo who threatened to kill him if he didn’t listen.

I hate to be "that guy", but Atilla the Hun is played by the guy who played Sandor Cligaine. Gregor is the big zombified one (The Mountain), Sandor is the less big one with the actual character arc (The Hound-burned face). I've seen that show far too many times. Awesome video & channel, btw (he says 2 years after the video is uploaded lol). Entertaining and educational.

Things I learned about Attila the Hun. He was likely a giant Lovecraften titan. On the moon. Who stole a sword from Mars. Yes, I play Fate/ Extella. And if anyone takes this seriously. Well I donno what I'll do.
