You did great honestly, you went so far as to break down the lyrics, edited the text and added the necessary highlights, that’s no small feat for only a few hours! People will always have their own opinions, and honestly, we’re all kind of spoiled by higher-end KZitem video essays… Lindsay Ellis, YMS/Your Movie Sucks, and Movie Bob just to name a few. They are INSANELY well-researched, super long and super in-depth analysis, they spend so much time covering all their bases and double-checking their opinions just to avoid getting nit-picked… I don’t think you should feel discouraged from speaking your mind real quick, or blurting some occasional unfiltered opinions. Not every joke needs to be a banger, and not every reference needs to have 50 cited sources. Whiny commenters are guilty of mistakes too, but they didn’t put in the work hours that you did! …On the other hand, just be warned that there ARE some majorly pedantic commenters out there, on a mission to set the records straight. It can make one feel so uncomfortable about minor missteps… Doesn’t hurt to double-check your work if you’ve got the extra time. Keep it up yo! I look forward to checking out future vids

It's crazy because Lin Manuel CAN write good lyrics, especially for musicals. Not just the obvious In The Heights and Hamilton, but Moana and Encanto for disney movies. He can write rap into his songs and they can still be phenomenal. The big mistake was 1. Adding a rap to THE LITTLE MERMAID, and 2. Having Awkwafina rap the song, and 3. Personally, I blame corporate more than composer (Alan Menken) and lyricist (Lin) for scuttlebutt. They probably tried to salvage as much as they could from that disaster.

@@alikarol3 Sadly, that's Disney for you. They made masterpieces and wanted to recapture that for live action. It's a slippery slope because people don't want the originals to change, but on the other hand no one wants to watch an exact replica of their favorite movies (it would be boring and you could just watch the original - AKA they should just stop live actions). In my opinion they should of stopped at Maleficent. I think the original isn't bad, but it's hard to follow and gets a bit slow. The Female Lead wasn't really inspirational (for young girls) so they picked everyone's favorite villain to be the main lead. The original had maybe 1-2 songs so it wouldn't be a big deal if they didn't use them. You can see so much creativity go into that movie(like fairies, Maleficent's magic, Aurora's father, etc.), but it has gone downhill ever since.

I think the other producer just thought “do the Hamilton thing!” and Lin just went along with it, cause Lin isn’t that tone deaf, he has had song in products that were inconsistent to the rest of it, but they were conscious choices made as to give the characters they portrayed more personality Shiny, you’ll be back and the like. The songs in Hamilton were thought out though, this song was probably released with the 2nd draft of the song

He IS talented, and I don't even dislike him (for emphasis three Halloweens ago I was Lin-Manuel Usnavi and rapped the opening to In The Heights, which was actually the first cast album I ever owned), but its becoming more apparent he's not all that judicious and is starting to buy into the hype that he's "the new Ashman" even as Howard himself had a pretty good sense of what he was and wasn't able to do (he was brought on to Disney by Eisner and specifically sought out animation which at the time would have come out of nowhere and would have been perceived as slumming. It would have been much more logical for him to pursue success in the live action musical genre, maybe working with Bette MIdler or somebody on a movie musical as a Little Shop followup, rather than in a genre that at the time was most associated with Roger Rabbit). I think a lot of the problem is the people at Disney now don't understand why Howard Ashman made the Little Mermaid a musical. The basic premise of a musical is this: If there's too much emotion to be relayed just by talking, sing. If there's too much emotion to be relayed by just singing, dance. This is why so many of those song stick with us. Not simply because they're well written, perfectly sung (and Howard was a notorious perfectionist who drove his singers hard), lyrically brilliant songs but because they relay emotion beyond what is just said. That's why I, as a 37 year old man who doesn't care for musicals and isn't really all that hung up on the original Little Mermaid (there are better Disney movies), still remember the first time I saw "Part of Your World" and can still sing parts of it from memory. Linn Manuel Miranda has honestly always struck me as passe. The problem is that he's "the musical guy" of our time, but again, that doesn't mean he understands what Ashman was doing with the original, or even that he is a fan of the original. Honestly the rap song by Akwafina, written by Lin Manuel Miranda, sounds like something a focus group came up with. Hmm, what do the kids like these days? Survey says Hamilton, Akwafina and rap music. Well how do we combine those things?

All the new songs from these remake sounds off because they're just attached to a pre-existing piece that's well-known. A lot of people LMM as that "Rap guy" and while he does incorporate a lot of patter, he's shown musical diversity in things like Hamilton alone. His entire claim the same was bringing more modern music into Broadway this is why a lot of music ends up popular because it shreds the line between sounding like a mainstream song while still clearly being showtune adjacent.

Lin Manuel Miranda also wrote all the songs for the movie Vivo between that and his other works, my impression is that he really struggles to write intelligent or unique songs on “short: timeframes, though “short” meaning whatever the standard production period is right now. In Vivo the songs are catchy enough but all of them fall into one of 2 categories: Expressing a singular emotion in a repetitive pop song format or literally describing what is happening on-screen/in the story to a slightly more dynamic but still repetitive pop song format. In Hamilton the musical one of THE BEST songs is “My Shot” and that took him SIX YEARS to write! I think his two musicals are just so much more consistently good because he had enough time to actually write them

god. thank you for speaking out against this atrocity. I am still trying to process it myself. a couple notes: Scuttle actually has, believe it or not, *2* whole songs in the broadway adaptation! they used to be my least favourites, and I used to skip them-- but they actually sort of... grew on me, and now they're like. some *of* my favourites?? they're silly, but they're genuinely fun and pleasing to listen to, and the whacky voice isn't honestly all that grating. they've got some clever word play, great dance moves, and a unique sound - really catchy stuff overall! plus, the second one is a really heartfelt "you got this, girl!" number to uplift Ariel and encourage her to keep chasing her dreams, even with so many challenges stacked against her. I honestly really like it. it's cute and genuine. Scuttlebutt... feels like the lyrics and whatever semblance of an instrumental track it has don't even want to *be* together. it has that typical Calypso backing we associate with Sebastian, but overlaid with rap (notably a Lin rap) feels very... unnatural? the rhythms are NOT coming together and there are numerous moments where there are just, agonizingly long gaps between lyrics, or everything is way too fast to make any kind of sense of, which is... weird for an exposition song. it's excessively literal. I cannot believe these lyrics are supposed to be interpreted as snarky, smart, creative and playful, which... feels very much like the energy they're trying to sell this with. it BEWILDERS me that a behind-the-scenes tape quotes Alan Menken and Lin MM as being excited about the "magic" this new track suppsedly brings to the movie. and, honestly? writers with as much history/training/experience in writing for musicals should KNOW this stuff by now - that in a musical, a lyrical song should only exist to: a) advance the plot, or b) develop character. the audience is already stretching their disbelief as much as it already is: make it worth their time. give them substance, give them emotion, give them meaning. or: give them a well-written and entertaining comedy song that enhances their love for the characters on screen/stage! just... pick one!!! finally, I feel like... conceptually something like this could've worked, just in a MUCH different medium. stage musicals give you the benefit of flashy outfits and campy dance routines which can really help you lean into the silliness of something. heck - there are even parts of *this* song that I could imagine working a lot better in 2D animation, if the characters were allowed to have exaggerated movements and facial expressions, or... if the camera was allowed to do literally anything other than float aimlessly around every scene. (seriously. why is that so prevelant in this movie?? some snappy back-and-forth movements with closeups on character expressions would've done wonders here.) nothing kills me more than seeing Sebastian's soulless little hyperrealistic 3D model render *crab rapping,* though. just........ god. why. I'd be curious if you had any thoughts on what they did with Under The Sea, because... god I have so many.
@markusrogerson
Жыл бұрын
Under the sea made no sense to me. Not having sea creatures playing instruments meant they dodged creating more potentially creepy looking characters (or was it a budget thing?) but I’d rather that than a nondescript turtle shuffling along a floor with nothing to do with the lyric. Instead we got an extended dance break… why? They made such a big deal about having a dance troupe perform for them for reference. It just ruined the flow of the song. (So the extended scene can’t mean it had budget restrictions?) Overall it just makes me think Rob Marshall (is he the same one who directed Brandy’s Cinderella?) should not have taken a ‘make it look national geographic realistic’ angle… it’s a fairytale with mermaids… the ‘newt plays the flute’ and the ‘black fish she sing’ are sorely missed!

I have to think (hope?) that those quotes were taken out of context, and/or referenced another version of the song that was scrapped. Because, goodness. Most likely, though, they were just given tons of money and told to play it up. I cannot imagine, with how talented they both are, that either Alan or Lin seriously thought that the Scuttlebutt as it appears in the final version of the film was a welcome addition.

I like Lin Manuel Miranda's work in a lot of places, but it does have a time in a place. Howard Ashman is very dear to me, as is his work, and although I love Hamilton, Miranda was just not the person to write new songs for the little mermaid. Ashman had a strong vision for how everything was supposed to sound and feel to push the stiry along while making songs memorable and catchy. Sadly, I find this song to do neither. This is nothing against Lin, Awkwafina, and definitely not against Daveed, and I wouldn't say this is Disney's worst, but this song just doesn't fit the little mermaid or its narrative. Howard Ashman deserved his legacy to be shown fully through this movie, and it just.. wasn't.

In defense of the song "Savages", it was meant to make you, the audience, feel uncomfortable - because racism is an uncomfortable topic for everyone. In my opinion, "Savages" captures the terrible sentiments of racism perfectly - from both sides of the same human coin - with equal awfulness, showing no partiality between the European settlers nor the Native Americans - which is what racism is. Anyone of any skin tone/color can be racist - this is what Disney has shown through that song. The raw, abrasive harshness of the lyrics in "Savages" is meant to capture the gross nature of racism. It's a villain song that both sides partake in. You have both sides fuelling hatred for the other - dehumanizing one another all while preparing to war between each other. I say, if "Savages" makes you uncomfortable, that's good! That means you have a functioning moral compass & can recognize that racism is disgusting, no matter who it is of whatever skin color is doing it.
@drawingdragon
5 ай бұрын
Savages is an underrated villain song tbh. It just evokes such a powerful and tense feeling in the music - and the lyrics perfectly convey what they're supposed to. Two sides opposing one another who have dehumanizing the other - while Pocahontas flies to make one final gesture of peace. Even the word "Savages" itself is used brilliantly. Obviously you have the Englishmen referring to the "primitive" Natives as "Savages," something the English settlers actually did, evoking primitive or uncultured people. But the verse sung by the Natives, the Chieftan especially, conveys a similarly dehumanizing tone, but uses "Savages" to refer to them more as morally devoid or animalistic in their greed. The Chieftain isn't acting out of hatred, he's acting out of protection for his people who he sees as under attack - but that sentiment obviously twists into hatred of the Englishmen in the eyes of the younger Native warriors. The Chieftan sounds regretful and disappointed when he sings "The only thing they feel at all is greed. Beneath that milky hide, there's emptiness inside," But the warriors sound angry and spiteful when they finish "I wonder if they even bleed." The Natives were the ones being invaded, but by the point of the song occurring, they had let their rightful fear and rage turn them to acting with the same generalized hatred as the English captain had for them.

I really hate it how Disney wedges these new songs into their prexisting musicals/these added songs. The main problem is that these songs are from completely different periods of musicals/clearly different composers with different styles so they don’t jell or fit in the slightest and come off like pop songs rather than musical numbers made specifically for the film and their style Additionally I agree with your feelings on Lin Manuel, while I enjoy some of his songs they do feel more like just songs rather then musical numbers, like I king the song under the surface but it just sorta starts and has no real build up like musical numbers should

This reminds me of how in the late 90’s early 2000’s movie makers used to shove unnecessary poorly written rap songs into everything because they thought it was the cool thing for kids these days. It was a terrible trend then and I really don’t want that to return. Or at least hire someone who understands how to write a good rap. I mean there was a bit of rapping in Moana so I think Lin could write a rap, but that’s definitely not what we got here. And tonally not sure a tap really works anyway in this musical.
