One time in high school a friend was very upset because she got a bad grade when suddenly she stopped and apologized, saying that she must sound stupid being that upset over a grade compared to what I've been through. I told her not to apologize, that it was all relative. True, getting a bad grade most likely wouldn't upset me very much because I've been through so much worse, but to her getting a failing grade was the worst thing that had ever happened and so even though the situations were different, the feelings were the same.

It is incredible how, as children, my family was willing to protect my sister (10) and me (12) from the news of my father's passing at the hospital, but they did not allow us to have closure. Personally, I spent years searching for my father and only accepted his death when I turned 40. I believe it is important for children to be confronted with the realities of life and death. Depending on the circumstance, it can be a natural part of life, and by shielding them from such experiences, we only prolong their suffering and cause more harm.

I dont know if any of you have ever been on the beach alone at night with no sound or light pollution, been on the top deck of a cruise ship late at night when everything is quiet, or possibly on your own/friends boat with the engine and lights off, but the ocean goes from beautiful and majestic during the day, to an absolute monster at night.. A monster that seems alive and can reach up and swallow you at any point...You can't see hardly anything past arms length, but you can hear and even from land you can weirdly feel the power and destructive force that is the open ocean, it's honestly pretty intense. After realizing how the ocean sounds at night, i did it again while on mushrooms floating out at sea on a private boat when it was pitch black..which was hands down one of the most intense experiences of my life.. Anyway, now imagine all that (minus the shrooms), but as a child, out in the middle of that monster at night, alone, unable to see past your fingers (out at sea is the darkest dark you'll ever experience, and i used to live in the canadian bush) while on the tiniest flimsy dingy keeping you from certain death...Not knowing where you are, if there's a huge wave lurking behind you, or if anyone knows to even attempt to come looking for you.... As day turns to night and night back to day, the reality starts setting in making you slowly lose more and more hope by the hour that anyone is coming.. You're starting out with no clue if an SOS was even sent before the ship went down, so it could be days before anyone realizes something is wrong, and at that point, you'd probably be hundreds of miles away by then.. Even with a quick start by rescuers, it's still like trying to find a single pebble on miles of sandy beach with the pebble being near identical in color...As the dark thoughts become more and more prevalent, while floating aimlessly in the middle of the night in the middle of an absolute monster, the only potential peace you have is if you're able to sleep, or if it's a clear night and you're able to lay down and look up to see the most/brightest stars and moon you'll probably ever see in your life time (which in your mind, won't be long anyway) due to zero light pollution... One of the scariest things I can ever imagine as an adult, let alone as a child. Like i said before, the ocean at night gets intense even when you're on a boat that can take you back to saftey at any time it's a good thing she wasn't scared of the ocean in general prior to being stranded at sea, the thought of floating above the cold, vast, black empty void for miles below you while not knowing what's lurking beneath at any given moment, and the only barrier between that void, you, and therefore death, is less than 6 inches of life raft... just the fear and realization of that can be scarier than being lost for a lot of people, there would be no peace at that point.. day or night.

So sad for this poor girl to stay at sea for 4 days before being rescued? But what about little Renee? Where was she at? And how did she end up with Julian Harvey in his life raft?

This is one of the saddest stories. What are the odds of Tere's father hiring the "wrong" person to skip his boat ?? Why was evil sent specifically to THIS family? That just shows you cannot trust anyone. You HAVE to do your research before putting your family's lives in the hands of a stranger. Too many stories like these too many times whole families are wiped out because they trusted "someone"

It’s not that he didn’t do his research, they mentioned that the killer was a family friend. This was supposed to be a fun vacation. It’s a matter of bad people being able to hide well and do bad things.

Imagine the absolute fear of being abandoned on the ocean for that long,especially at a young age,worrying if you’ll make it out alive or be rescued or be killed by the sea creatures such as sharks… Main reason for my aquaphobia

They didn't explain that part. I'd guess he took Rene with him to make it look like he tried to save her. It would seem less suspicious than being the only one who made it to the dinghy.

I lost both of my parents as a seven year old and used to dream that I was alone at sea. I would look to every horizon in these dreams and only see water. Aye... This sweet girl- our childhoods were different...but the same. I've never watched a film and wished I could sit down and have a cup of tea with a person in the film, like we would understand in each other a fair amount, we would understand each other's heart which had to break but mend when we were just little bits...but I do sense this with Tere Jo. I would add that we all face enormous obstacles in life. Some of us face them, like we did, as children, when we are only coming to even see the world, in what should have been the safety of our family's care. We get robbed of so much that people take for granted and catapulted into adulthood so instantaneously, taught to rely on ourselves too soon, at the mercy of G-d, of strangers, extended family, and of trying to make a beautiful life with such broken pieces of childhood... Some people go through what seems like an idyllic life only to suffer in the end. Some people make it through a beautiful childhood, only to face non stop trouble in adulthood. Almost no one is spared...it's a million different struggles presented randomly. And as a rabbi tells me, no one gets out of here alive, so we all have death to face at some point as well. So we make beauty of the minutes and the moments we have...thriving, seeing, going, doing, creating, loving, helping, giving. This is being alive and keeping a light on in one's soul, so to say, even in adversity. If you are reading this and in a struggle in life, in your dark moment, I say 'hold on, hold on, keep hope.' And to Tere Jo, I send you a hug for being a brave girl and a woman who kept going and didn't quit life despite badness and heartbreak. And I send you all the best. -Rachel

Still doesn't make sense why the guy had the young child with him on the raft also it didn't speak of, though she died or anything did they not do an autopsy? Why would he keep everybody to make it more convincing that he was a good guy or something and trying to save her?
@davinasquirrel7672

It makes perfect sense in the view of a multiple murderer, to have the child with him, makes him look like a hero that tried to save people, when the reality was the opposite. He probably murdered (drowned) the youngster in the raft before being rescued.
