Any movie with Mare Winningham, Brian Dennehy and Annette Bening can't be all bad and in a play by Chekhov. Those 3 are some of the finest American actors. Glad to see that Denney hasn't passed on and seeing him and Mare Winningham again would be a treat for me.

The play seems like a tragedy, but Chekhov intended the play to be a Comedy. Interestingly. Although the ending still makes me sad. I've never seen the movie but if it's exactly like the play, then damn. Beautiful play.

Anton Chekov was a writer at the end of Czarist Russia. He wrote plays and short stories but is better known for his plays and professionally he was a doctor. In my opinion, Chekov was one of the greatest Russian writers of all time. Among the plays he wrote were The Cherry Orchard, Three Sisters and Uncle Vanya, to name a few. His plays are still being shown in theaters all over the world. If a Chekov production is ever done in your local area do yourself a favor and go see it.

Matthew Beams, duh. Of course,I have. If you think that a suicide, an extra-marital affair, a miscarriage, deep depression, creative crisis, creative jealousy, identity crisis, numbness to life and overall wrong choices (the younger generation is just miserable!) are very funny, be my guest. Chekhov had a sense of humour, sure, but his understanding of the comedy genre wasn't based on 'funny ha-ha'.

Great play, unwatchable movie. Forget about the movie. Interiors too dark, speech inflections of the 21st century, nauseating camerawork without a tripod, pointless nude scene at the beginning to hook people who don't care about Chekhov, etc., etc. It's an awful film. If you can't see this Chekhov masterpiece onstage, read it. It's better on the page than it is in this rotten adaptation.
