But yeah…this isn’t like the ice you cut through to go ice fishing-or even the thickest region of the Antarctic Ice Sheet (~4.9 km-3 mi). I know that it is counterintuitive at first glance, but it seems to be harder to propel a spacecraft toward the Sun rather than away from it. Look how hard it seems to be to send spacecraft near Mercury. Notice how expensive the proposed Mars sample return projects are getting. Even with gravity assists, any spacecraft reaching Earth is going to have a LOT of kinetic energy to bleed off in the Earth atmosphere. This turns into heat, which could quickly damage if not totally vaporize any sample.
@DeepeningTheListening
28 күн бұрын
There is high interest in studying Enceladus, but it's not easy. From what I understand the sample sizes collected in the plumes are too small for direct detection of life. NASA is working on getting technologies ready for future missions, but we're not there, yet.
@alder2460
28 күн бұрын
@@stuartschaffner9744 Oh yes, I’m fully aware of this. I said earlier that returning is a problem. The samples can be encased in a heat resistant capsule, which could be launched separately to land on Earth - just like with the Bennu return sample mission. Of course those are problems to solve and risks are involved, but despite all of this it still seems much easier to do this than to drill through ice on Europa to remotely study water and find out if life is there. If returning to Earth proves to be too challenging, sending a probe through plumes with an advanced onboard laboratory equipped to detect as many biosignatures as possible is still a better and more direct option than landing on either Europe or Enceladus and drilling. Cassini already did a good job with that, but there is far more data to collect there.

Actually, Europa's orbit is almost circular (e=0.009), and that SMALL eccentricity would be even CLOSER to zero (hence, NO tidal heat production and dissipation) if it weren't for Io and Ganymede EXCITING that small eccentricity to be non-zero by orbital resonances. That's why Jupiter can tidally affect Europa. The same thing happens to excite volcanism on Io (Europa and Ganymede tugging in resonance) to give its orbit non-zero eccentricity (0.0041). That 1:2:4 orbit-orbit-orbit resonance is unique in the Solar System.

Great video!! It reminded me of an encounter about 3 years ago with a woman from Univ of Washington in Seattle, a PhD candidate as I remember. I was teaching landscape astro photography to a couple of clients in Yellowstone National Park late one night...at one of the parks many thermal features. Running up the boardwalk in the complete black of night towards us was this woman, alone, no bear spray & out of breath...she was told we were up at this location and it would be safe from any wildlife encounters if she got to us!? Anyway, she was part of the Europa Project working under a grant from NASA at Univ of WA!! She was in Yellowstone gathering samples from some of the acid pools & acidophiles with park biologists. Something to do with the development of testing/sensor equipment to verify the presence of this spectrum of life on Europa!! I suspect this was all part of the development of the Europa Clipper Mission from your video...what a small world we live on!!

One thing I would add is that the data collected would pave the way towards planning a surface mission to Europa such as a melt probe. One question I have is how close Clipper will actually fly to the surface of Europa? Since there is no atmosphere on the moon, can we expect kilometer level flybys of particularly interesting areas of the moon such as the chaos terrain?

I was laughing while watching the video because of the separate story going on in the background: book on upper shelf .... Pippin + book ... Pippin + book (now on lower shelf) ... Pippin (no book) ... book (no Pippin) ... epic ...

Awesome video! I can totally relate to the claws in the legs as our boy jumps onto them! Oh and the dangling ribbons? Our cat will attack anything dangling! Your can looks beautiful!

Just want to say I just got done reading your book " A brief history of black holes" love it you helped me grasp what you had to say in a quite entertaining way. The shout out to Douglas Adams at the end was so nice. He was a wonderful writer and I miss him so much. Peace love & stardust. TomCat

Europa is my favourite moon. And Pippin is starting to be my favourite YT content creator.
