It would be the coolest thing to somehow find a house along the Tib where you can still access it from a basement.
@Ali-7676
4 жыл бұрын
I read in another comment on one of Martin's videos how someone who used to work in the basement at a department store (I forget the name) once ventured into the lower basement and opened a hatch in the floor and saw the Tib flowing underneath. He said it was quite fast flowing and intimidating at the time. I dont know why Im so interested, the few times I visited the UK, I never went to Manchester!
@gmr1241

@@Ali-7676 I wonder which department store? The three I can think of were Debenhams, Lewis's and Kendals. Debenhams went down at least a couple of floors below the basement that's open now. I haven't watched the video yet so I could be way off...

That would not be possible. That would be going against safety regulations in that when the tib flows at max speed it will flood the basement.. It will also be an illegal way to smuggle drugs or smuggle dead bodies. But i do aggree that that would be extremely good and you can call it your house.

Absolutely fantastic!!!!! Superlatives do not do this justice. It is truly unbelievable the amount of history, which is quite literally under our feet, in our major towns and cities. Modern against historic, it’s quite the juxtaposition. We live in a world of quantum mechanics, super fast computers and mobile devices. Yet as we walk through Manchester we are walking over rivers which were culverted by men using tools which had not changed for well over a thousand years, spade, pick axe and some clever men of the days with a plan. I have been a regular subscriber of your channel for some time and for a simple reason. You make videos wish PASSION. That’s all it takes for a great video. They don’t need perfect camera work, followed by hours of post production editing etc. You bring the topic alive because of your passion sir! And long may it continue. I have also been watching some of your videos with my little nephew. He to likes to look where few people do. I would love to see your take on the lost rivers of London. Now that would be a good one. Your mission if you should choose to accept it, is to keep going up that tunnel and look up at the trap door! Kidding of course but a brilliant conclusion to the mysterious adventure. There was a time when I would have trudged up there with you but not any more, I’m quite happy for you to do it. Absolutely brilliant Martin, loved every minute of it. My guess is that would be a “cut and shut” tunnel where they built it first then buried it before finally diverting the river into it. What it lacks in width, it gains in height which is the reserve capacity in times of flood. All those little arches are beautifully made and I wonder who built them? Who got out of his dingy bed and went and mixed mortar and laid those bricks. Amazing mate, thank you.

I was almost as excited as you, when you stuck your hand in the water of the Tib. How far along that wee tunnel is the trapdoor? There's got to be a book in this somewhere !! Is your video footage suitable for lifting some still images? You have surely got enough "new" material to publish an updated version of the book you found on Amazon/eBay. Didn't you say that you had contacted the author? Would a collaboration with him be a possibility? Your work, determination, research and knowledge should be preserved in a more permanent way than KZitem. Can't wait for the next bit; the grand finale? You'll need to take a bottle of fizz with you for the conclusion or, at least, a flask.☺ Great work Martin, so, so, so much better than the **** on T.V. Cheers for now, Dougie. Just a thought, if others agree with me about a book, maybe "like" this comment.

Yet another great video, Martin. Very touching to see you achieve the dream of finding the Tib where it converges with the Medlock. I felt so happy for you. I wish somebody of your ilk would do something similar in my city (Birmingham) because I'm absolutely certain that we have a hell of a lot of history undiscovered or not particularly widely known round these parts too. The vandalism carried out by the City Council in the name of progress in the 1960s was unforgivable. It destroyed so much of Birmingham's visible history only to replace it with concrete as far as the eye could see. Tragic. Sadly, Manchester appears to be undergoing a similar kind of transition at this time. The eradication of history, only to be replaced by bland, faceless glass and concrete. Your kind of documentation will, I'm sure, be absolutely invaluable in the future, Martin, because our cityscapes are changing at a frightening rate these days; and without us even realising it half the time. Stay safe, my friend and best wishes for your future adventures.

Enough of a blockage to cause a flood somewhere as trees are like sieves. Half of the crap in the tunnel is going to meet that tree in the winter and back up in minutes and possibly hold its position for a while. The limited maintenance of our Waterways is not helped by the route some now follow, but out of sight, out of mind seems appropriate. As a child all rivers in the area had derelict mills and their contents spilling into the river everywhere. Colours of the rainbow sat in every bit of still water, the smell was similar to the gas tank smell with a hint of toxicity. The amount of Steel in there made it the colour of Chocolate, in some areas a thick scum built up and set hard enough in the summer for Hawks to snatch rats running across. Glad you reached the Tib, what a cracking bit of brickwork to end on. What next? Have you ever tried to reproduce anything in 3D from your Photo's, photogrammetry could reproduce that entrance.

It's so tiny! And I would have walked as far up that tunnel as I could and filmed it. Maybe it goes far enough to see where the canal drain is. I love these water videos. I am fixated with small streams and source springs and this tunnels and culverts stuff is so interesting. It reminded me of the streets in Baltimore in the USA where you can see where a stream runs under the road by the topography of the streets and hills. Somewhere under there is an old tunnel with a stream running through it. I try to imagine what it looked like above ground when the land there was still farm or even further back, woods. I saw the lay of the land north at the city county line too, used to live there. There was an open stream in one portion, but it's source feed was totally tunnel/piped, and so was wherever it flowed to. Nearby on another street you can see by topography where a spring started and formed a small stream by an old farm house still there, but its completely underground and hidden now. It then runs down under that street, which is called Cold Spring Lane.

Thank you so much for that explore, so extremely interesting! In admidst the mud, sand and dirty waters, is another world of quiet and ancient beauty that people pass unknowingly over - this hidden river running beside and through such beautiful brickwork and arches. Edited to add how great it was to see the trapdoor again and connect it with its little tributary! You have captured so well the forgotten and deserted derelict atmosphere of this historic waterway. Nothing stands still and eventually there must be some upkeep by the NRA or the trees will break up the brickwork bit by bit. It feels like a copy of your video needs to be placed in some historical records archive.

It's incredible to see all the bricks they used to cover the rivers.

Neat music again - just thinking of when all that would've been open to the skies, then all the brickies, hiding all away from the worlds eyes.....

This reminds me of my own search for the exact route of an abandoned railway bed where I lived along the western border of the state of Pennsylvania. It ceased to be a working railroad in the late 1960's, and by 1980 significant sections of it were being ripped up, the metal being scrapped, and the wood ties used by whoever wanted them for property bordering and landscaping. Before google earth, various online map services with satellite source images came in handy for trying to identify the former railway's exact route. Eventually someone started up a website detailing the existence of abandoned rail lines, and so I was able to find out everything I wanted to know as people scoured through libraries and municipal archives and added their discoveries. I bring that up because somewhere in Manchester there has a be a collection of maps and blueprints detailing the history of that entire river and canal subsystem. If river work was done as official city business, there will be papers and forms detailing that project.

I don't often do this, a second comment but you are now at the Hotspur Press as I watch. At "The Percy Brothers" Hotspur Press building named by someone who knew his Shakespeare "Henry the Fourth" part one featured Harry Percy duke of Northumberland Known as "Hotspur" who led a failed rebellion against the monarchy. I remember this because I was in the Manchester Youth Theatre and after auditions I was in a production of Henry the fourth part one at the Renold Theatre in the UNIST complex.

C.R. on the old OS map refers to the location of the dashed line being the administrative boundary along the Centre of River.
