Tears in my eyes for those who lay in that cemetery. They were forgotten and alone until you took the thorns to get to them. Even though some don't have names on the markers, they were remembered today. Thank you for your time and effort to make a difference. And thank you for sharing. Stay safe out there Leo. My father was the first person to rent the County Farm in Gibson County Tennessee after it was closed down in the 1950s. i was only about 3 years old when we moved there. We lived in the big house that the superintendent had lived in. There was a cemetery there that as back in the pasture. I was told as a lettle boy not to wonder back there as i might fall in a old grave that had sunk in. We moved from there in early 1964 after my father purchased another farm near by. I still live less than a mile from there.

My great grandfather had a sister, whose son was sent there in the early 1950s. He was mentally challenged, and was in his 70s, when his caretaking brother became unable to care for him any longer. He was a gentle soul, who loved the texture of fabrics. We took little pieces of leftovers from our mother's quilting, to him. If there was a piece he especially liked, he would sit and stroke if for hours. He also loved marbles. His brother's wife would sweep them into the fireplace ashes, where they would melt. He cried over each one that was damaged. Yet he would become violent if agitated, and one cousin was cruel enough to tease him, just to see a tantrum! He was only in the poor farm for a few months, and died there on 1 Dec 1955. It took me a long time to find his death certificate, which says he's buried there. His only brother died six months later. A long-lost sister was found, living until late 1980s, but she was apparently estranged from the family since the 1940s. I've searched diligently for an obituary for Willie Abshire, without finding one.

Hi I just found your channel over this past weekend it’s now Monday night and I’ve not stopped watching your channel as of yet ! Omg!!! It’s paid off !!! I have cried so hard in these few minutes the video I dreamed and prayed you might vaguely mention the “poor farm” just the words would so make my heart so happy at 6:45 pm it happened you said it !!! You did it !! I will FOREVER be greatful !! Now let me tell you why…. My daddy grew up there he was the grandson of Draxie Starkey the last one to run the poor along with her husband Roscoe Starkey. You mentioned so many of the names and things that were a part of all the stories that I was raised on and have carried with me most of my life. His name was Robert Douglas Picklesimer Son of Beauhla May Roberts Picklesimer he lived in Bristol Tn and would come to Pikeville on the bus and spend the summer. Working along beside “the poor farmers” he remembered several names and stories about some of those that lived there a long period. Told me about the fire you just mentioned in your video and the garden work as well. His great grandparents ran the farm before his grandmother their daughter took over. He spoke of the dinners that his grandmother Draxie and Roscoe would start on on Friday before sun up and cook up until dinner time on Saturday afternoon big fine dinners he would say. (I’m still smiling and in such a state of disbelief that I just watched this!! Oh I thank you so much 😊!!! I could just jump up and down I’m so happy !! 😁 ) Anyway 2 more things…. Moving the cemetery….. my daddy helped Roscoe and 2 “poor farmer men “ move all those grave marking stones. Notice what I wrote. And you should be a betting man. Is all I feel like saying here but anyone knows what I mean and no one is in shock. There is more stories I’d love to talk about with you and I could listen to your voice forever and have now for over 24 hrs straight hahahaha😊 The last time I had him over there we went to his mothers gave site which is in a family cemetery. I want to say the name is “up on Peach Orchard” was the way he called. There is also Mrs Draxie Starkey and her parents the Tacketts known as “big mom and big pop” the ones that ran farm before Draxie and Roscoe . Now to me what was amazing this cemetery is on the top of a steep hillside that is right in the middle of a neighborhood!! Which I saw that wasn’t unusual for over in Pikeville of the past. But it amazed me that day that we went straight up a steep hillside on some rough cut stone steps that had loosened to a scary state well once you reach the top of those old steps , in the middle of a small mountain, in the middle of a neighborhood, in the middle of a curve in the road you see it !! lol A maybe 7 foot long solid black marble crypt!!! The crypt has beautiful poems etched in it along the side and on the front was a beautiful exact etched picture of his uncle Charles Douglas Roberts ( “C.D.” ) for me it was also odd that there was a really nice picnic shelter and nice tables . 😯 Now that is a cemetery story for you as well as poor farm info threw in. Ha/Ha I have fallen in love with your and your wife’s channel so please keep up the great work and I guarantee I will be over here in Marion Va watching you 😀😊❤️ AGAIN THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO ON THE “POOR FARM” something I’ve spent many hours and hours looking for .

So very sad that all those people ended up with just a plain metal marker marking their final resting place. They may have been forgotten down here but God knows them all and I pray that they have all gone on & received their heavenly reward. The last will be first and the first shall be last. I guess the only good thing about this cemetery being where it is is that it hadn’t been vandalized and the grave markers tore out of the ground and just flung willy-nilly all over the place. It would take too much physical effort to get to where it is by those types that like to do that sorta thing.. Thank you Leo for tackling that hill so we didn’t have to. Hope you & Heather get back to full fighting form soon. Even after getting over the flu, it can still be a good 4-6 weeks before you get your energy and stamina back. Thank you for all the effort you put into these videos. It is really appreciated. You are bringing out stories that would not get told otherwise. My uncle and I have talked many times, about the old settlers and people in wagon trains, etc. That were on journeys across this country, and someone died along the trail. Be it smallpox, diphtheria pneumonia or whatever, when they died, where they died, became their final destination on this earth. Some were marked with a wooden board, others a single rock with no inscription, no nothing. How many thousands or millions have been burned and no one knows who or where. What about all the native Americans? The old mountain communities would be the same. As ya'll have stated, if you settled in one holler, you may not have ever left there for the rest of your life. If you traveled somewhere and passed, that's where you were buried, just too difficult to transport a body somewhere. God knows the names of the dead, for many, that's all. God bless ya'll and the work ya'll are doing. Keep up the great work.

Damn !! I don't which about this story saddens me the most ? There may be someone still alive that helped with the move in 1979 , and if there is . They forgot about the people they moved . Why did Pikeville pick that place to bury them ? Get them out of the way ? And , how the hell did they get them up there ?! After you walked up what was an old road and got to the end of the flat area . How would they have gotten them all up there , from there ? Sad that they have all been forgotten . Sad that Pikeville has not kept up , the "dumping grounds " . Wonder if it was every maintained after they were moved ?! I don't know if all the unknown's is the saddest or that none have anybody left who cares ?! Maybe someone watching will see their family name you scrolled and take an interest. Great video THF !

Reminds me of a movie I watched on KZitem. True story about a young woman who was sent to one of these places. They said the same thing about her baby. The doctor there was sterilising mentally disabled people; he was the inspiration for the Nazis to do the same thing. I can't remember the name of the film, but the actress is deaf in real life. Edit: I searched 'deaf Hollywood actress, and her name is Marlee Matlin. It's a made for TV film from 1994, called 'Against Her Will: the Carrie Buck Story'. Highly recommended. The baby turned out to have normal intelligence, but unfortunately died at seven years old 😢

You tell and show history that very few know about and history that isn’t thought in schools. Great historian guide work. Thank You. I stumbled around in a small cemetery in New York my Grandmother was showing us her Grandparents graves. It was a forgotten cemetery And I wet to a funeral of a great Aunt how was buried in Iowa in a neglected cemetery. So there’s a lot of forgotten neglected cemetery’s in our country. I’ve heard it only takes three generation’s and you are no longer remembered your just a nothing anymore. Do something great or bad then you might be remembered for a little wile longer or not at all.

My home County had a "Pauper Farm," and its location is known and designated by the road name. Beyond that, little is known.
