This episode could honestly be argued as the best in the series. Each member of the Bebop crew is used in such a fun and creative way, and perfectly shows off their personalities and attitudes toward life. And the topic of this episode being how media can be a tool for control never feels preachy; it's just incredibly fascinating to think about. The bounty head is also unique from the others. He isn't like a Rocco or Rhint who got caught up in an unfortunate situation, and he isn't an obvious bad guy like Udai or Pierrot. He was just a kid who found the idea of the mind and body being separate entities interesting. While he WAS a con artist, he was also just a confused kid. That's why that shot of Jet leaving the cuff on him is so symbolic; what he did was wrong but what can you do to punish him? Like Ed said, hopefully he just has sweeter dreams than what he had before.

It's impossible to dispute but this is, for me, the best track in the whole show. It's evocative and cathartic but also painful, making you think about all that's transpired in your life and the lives of those around you. There's comfort in knowing you're not alone, but at the same time, you very much are. It's just such a beautiful song.

Here's to Yoko Kanno casually slipping in the anthem of Imperial Russia at 4:11. Not really sure why she'd do that, but one possible reason: the central character/villain of episode 23 (Brain Scratch) is an apparently Russian boy ("Rosny Spanngen"). Could the young male voice singing a Russian song into an echoing void signify the solitary figure of Rosny himself??? Perhaps. Is Yoko Kanno bound by human limits? Absolutely not.

When I hear this, I imagine waking up the day after the town I lived in just got nuked. Crawling out of the wreckage, seeing all the death and destruction around me, all I can think of is how things used to be. My beautiful green lawn. The green trees and the beautiful blue skies. Somehow, in the very middle of all the wreckage, is a flower. A red rose. Perhaps painted with the blood of all the dead and fallen. This symbol of hope gives me the strength, to stand up, and begin another life.

Brain Scratch is probably my second favorite episode of Cowboy Bebop. It’s the last episode where things are normal, the group is all together and trying to catch a bounty head. I think the ominous themes of the episode are meant to reflect that. I also think Dr Londes makes for a strange but great final bounty head for the Bebop crew.

I was just thinking this. You know what would’ve made this scene sadder is that last shot of the kid in the hospital. They could’ve added another closeup of his unconscious face but with tears rolling down his cheeks as if to show a sign that he has some kind of consciousness and that he’s finally having sweet dreams and finally be at peace. If that makes sense?
