Not an exercise, but I had mine snipped a bit. From what I remember (I was eight I think) it’s a very quick procedure with local anaesthetia. Definitely worth getting it imo if it’s affecting other aspects of your life.

There's a face yoga excercise that might help. You sit straight look up at the ceiling comfortably and then with you mouth closed bring the whole tongue to the roof of your mouth. Pulse at rate of 1 per second and do it for 1 min everyday. Should relieve some tension. It's just a face yoga tighten the neck but it might provide relief

@HappilyAnonymousGirl

You can get it cut by a dentist, oral surgeon, or an ENT doctor. It costs about $750 out of pocket. There’s also the cost of myofunctional therapy before and after, which isn’t technically required, but it is necessary for you to get the best possible results. Mainly to keep it from reattaching after the procedure. The therapy sessions cost $100 per session, either once a week or twice a month. It depends on where you are, and your preference. I was supposed to go once a week, but I couldn’t afford that at the time, so I went every two weeks. The reason it affects swallowing and chewing is because of how certain muscles are forced to work harder, due to the restriction of movement. When we swallow, for example, our tongue is supposed to suction to the roof of our mouth and slide back, but some people have such a strong tie that only the front part of the tongue can touch to roof of the mouth. Even with their mouth closed they can’t fully suction their tongue, and some people can’t suction it at all. Not everyone with a tongue tie needs to get it cut. Some people have one that isn’t tight at all. It’s best to get evaluated to see what yours is like, but almost everyone can benefit from getting it cut. The people with a looser tie will only see a small difference, but it’s still technically a benefit lol. I’ve seen several stories from people who had major benefits tho. Mainly posture improving. Some even had pack pain disappear after, and one woman’s personality changed. She was very anxious before, and very relaxed and chill after. That one is one of my favorites. It just blew my mind that that can even happen.

Can attest. I have chronic issues with my cervical spine, which caused pain for 15 years that was at times debilitating. I had my tongue tie addressed 4 years ago, and while I still have spine problems, the pain is fully manageable and often absent. The first change I noticed after the procedure was that I could swallow easily! I'd had no idea I'd been working so hard to be able to swallow. If you want to get yours addressed, please please see an appropriate (specialized) dentist. They are not easy to find, but there is much more to this for adults than simply clipping some tissue. For example: I had six weeks of specialized physiotherapy on either side of the surgery itself.

Wait, could this be why the back of my tongue is always pushed against the roof of my mouth?? (Which causes all kinds of pain...) I can never keep it in the "proper" position. Orthodontists forced me to change my natural "wrong" tongue position (tip resting against lower teeth) with tongue spikes 30 years ago, and I think it ultimately made everything worse. Edit: To clarify, I definitely have a short frenulum or whatever it's called like the guy in this short.

Nah bro, it just “could be” the cause, doesn’t mean it necessarily is the problem, your tongue are naturally made to rest on the top, i was a mouth breather too as i couldnt breath through my nose, but after the nose surgery i dont have to breath through mouth and now i can rest my tongue to the roof, it change a lot in my facial structure. there may be some other cause, you should see a doctor for a proper treatment
@Cardboardruna

@@Draxilla I deliberately said "could" because that is precisely the question I intended to ask. I just want to know if it is possible in general. Unfortunately, MDs don't have a clue when it comes to muscles. I wasted 20 years and thousands of dollars relying on them and they were utterly useless. Worse than useless. They told me the pain that had literally destroyed my life wasn't even possible. A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to be seen by the PhD physiotherapist that treats our city's NBA players, and he confirmed that not only was the pain very much real, he could literally tell that the areas were screwed up just by feeling it happening under my skin. He and his staff helped me walk again. I will never go to another regular MD about muscles and fascia as long as I live.

The answer to how to fix this is to get a tongue tie revision. It’s a procedure where they cut the skin under your tongue, so it can move freely. We’re not supposed to have this, but a lot of people are born with it. A doctor can cut it if a baby has it, and the parents just have to stretch the baby’s tongue, so it doesn’t reattach. Also, it’s best to do myofunctional therapy before and after the procedure, as an adult, so you can develop the muscles in your tongue. The reason why is so you won’t have as much difficulty doing the stretches to keep it from reattaching. Plus, it restores proper movement of the tongue. From personal experience, the therapy exercises are super beneficial on their own. A few days into doing exercises, I noticed my smile improved a lot. It was actually way more even and looked amazing. Also, my face was looking more symmetrical after just a week and my neck was nowhere near as tense anymore. I’ve done the myofunctional therapy so far and am waiting to do the procedure. It’s around $750 for anyone wondering how much it is out of pocket. The therapy takes about a month with one session a week to learn new exercises and make sure you’re on track. Then, the cut is done by a dentist or ENT doctor and you’ll go back to therapy until it heals. I forget how long it takes to fully heal, but I believe stitches should come out at 6 days. Some people may only need to do myofunctional therapy to get relief, but if it’s really tight, then cutting it is the only way to get full relief and tongue mobility. There’s a lot of videos here on KZitem for anyone interested in learning more about it. There’s exercises, procedure videos, before and after stories, and other informative stuff. I went down the rabbit hole and learned quite a bit to prepare myself lol If you decide to do the exercises, it’s best to make sure your neck doesn’t tense at all while doing the exercises, or you won’t be engaging the right muscles. There’s certain muscles that need to stretch, and ones that need to get stronger. This won’t happen if your neck muscles are taking over to compensate for the weaker muscles you’re trying to train. Make sure to breathe, too. It’s super important, because it helps your muscles relax and function properly. Not breathing is the main reason people’s necks tense up in the first place lol Just passing on what I’ve learned from from my myofunctional therapist that I don’t think is shared enough in videos. It doesn’t matter how many videos you follow along with. If you’re not doing everything right, then it’s either gunna do nothing or make things worse. So breathe and relax and have fun staring at your goofy face 🤪

Or instead of paying a myofunctional therapist. Get some gaws and hold your tongue. The point of the gaws is so that your tongue doesn't slip out of your fingers and you have a good grip. Even if you need an ENT to perform surgery on the tongue you still need to do some myofunctional therapy beforehand.

Yes. Orthodontics is all a scam. Look into Myofunctional therapy and mewing and eating harder. Our ancestors prior to agriculture really popping off and food got way softer and we changed our breathing and tongue posture, had straight teeth, wide maxilla and the tongue on the roof of their mouth the tongue kept the jaw wider and teeth pressed out.

Is the normal position supposed to be teeth lightly touching on both molars and tongue on the roof of your mouth right? When I do rest my teeth even with my teeth being pretty dang straight, the dividing line between my bottom middle most teeth is like a 1/16” to the left. It feels natural having my teeth together and I went from mouth breathing to light mewing but with the slightest open jaw and no molar contact. I do have a bad tongue tie though so the back of my tongue could be making better contact to mew properly.
