I love how if you own a 32mb Roland thingy it sounds like an orchestral song, and if you don't, *BLOOP BLOOP*
@soylentgreenb
Жыл бұрын
No. Most people played it with an adlib card or some clone (e.g. sound blaster). It sounds pretty OK with FM synthesis. It also supported Tandy, CMS, Gravis ultrasound (sample based) and many midi cards could emulate MT32 with differing quality if you played it years after release. From 1994 it also had a CD release with CD audio.
@bjeah

Technically, it's a 1-bit song. The PC-speaker synthesizer is only 1-bit, meaning the amplifyer can only be set to push the speaker out or leave it in the middle. Making anything else than bleeps and bloops is difficult, though not impossible. And what lovely bleeps, am I right? (8-bit systems, on the other hand, can simulate different synthesizers with 256 levels of amplitude). 1-bit music hasn't quite risen from nostalgia to retro yet, but this video helps! *wipes tears of retro-nostalgia*

Can all pc speaker have multiple sounds at once? This has only one at a time, it seems like, but Bubble Dizzy has multiple, on KZitem. On my own pc, though, it did only have one.
@Ziryu2
6 жыл бұрын
607 Kinda? but not really? Bubble Dizzy only has one sound at the time aswell. It just swaps betweene the different notes to give the illusion of multiple sounds at the same time. So if you were to put the Bubble Dizzy soundtrack in a soundwave analyzer, you could tell theres only one amplitude per frequency/frequency per amplitude. Its a nice way of giving the illusion of multiple sounds at once with limited hardware though.

@607

@@Ziryu2 I just checked it out in Audacity, and you're right!! That's amazing. :o In this theme I can easily hear that there's just one sound at a time, but in Bubble Dizzy's soundtrack they are so quickly and smartly alternated that I do not notice it. Listening back to a recording I once made of my own pc speaker's sound, I hear now that it plays the tune at half speed but keeps the bleeps very short (maybe I had wrong settings on DOSbox), which is why I could notice the separate tones there. :)

Odd that it is so faithful. The tempo, the key, the melody. All completely faithful to the actual tune. Usually when music is converted into a 1-bit beeper, it is quite clumsy and lazy and the programmer can't be bothered getting it to sound accurate.

Mansen Actually, nope - at least it wasn't created this way. The PC speaker tunes in Monkey Island 1 and 2 were automatically generated from polyphonic MIDI tunes. The engine analyzed all notes played at the same time and choose the "winning" one based on its length, remaining time to its end and instrument priority. This way the game could easily generate series of low rhythm beeps that don't seem to disturb the melody (which actually didn't work with MI2 theme as great as here). You can check how it's done by looking at ScummVM sources.

Actually when talking of 8-bit systems the 8 refers to the word size the processor uses. You would be hard pressed to "simulate" a synthesizer at a clean sample rate with the chips that most people think of when they hear 8-bit music. In most cases these chips used hardware to generate a one of a few different wave forms, word size having relatively little to do with it. Some chips could sample audio at a painfully low bit rate like the NESs DPCM channel but the samples were barely few seconds.
