You forgot one neat bonus when it comes to the Insult Swordfighting. Normally when you start out the Insult Swordfighting, you only start with two insults, fighting like a dairy farmer and the shish kebab one. But if you tell the troll that you're a Mighty pirate and then you tell him that you can outinsult anybody, he'll tell you "I once had a dog that was smarter than you" and to stick that to your repotoir, and when you start the Insult Swordfight out, you'll have this one as well.

As a person that hasn't English as my main language, yeah it can be hard and nonsensical, just now I got why the troll wanted the fish all this time I thought I was bribing him with it, but it still was super charming and the fact had so little inventory most of the times you just shove everything and hope it works and I think the game gives great tips too what each item is and where to use it, I remember loving the way they did the recipe on this game because was a lot of "Ohhh..." moments, but the sword fighting was a bit of pain because I didn't get many of the jokes. 27:46 Actually, Ron Gilbert criticise the use-talk-pick up UI as he said it reduce the puzzles to just using the right item on the right thing and just clicking on things if not using an item. In his new game he changed the UI from the verb inventory to a verb menu that appear when you click on an object and gives you options specifically for that object, personally I think it is a neat idea since it both save you space on the screen and get rid of the need of the use option.

Hey Connor! AMAZING video! Worth every wait of the wait! Also my gathered comments :) 11:53 One of the very few things I dislike in the original VGA style. LeChuck's red nose... Ugh! I switch to Special Edition in the scenes containing LeChuck. 16:40 I hope you mention the (equally great) bickering chess players in Escape From Monkey Island as a call back to the bickering of Fettuccine Brothers. 25:55 how come your spell checker has problems with 'wot' ? 28:12 My favourite is from Escape From Monkey Island; "Pick up the moon??". I love a lot of things from EFMI. Fight me! 35:08 GOLD! PURE GOLD! 36:02 I hope you mention in next games that this kind of puzzle is a recurring theme that returns in Monkey Island II, IV and... V maybe? (I don't remember) 43:45 I absolutely confirm. I was there, Gandalf, I was there 3000 years ago, and I was hit by that exact clash between the amazing high fidelity graphical scene... and the absurd right after. 44:12 Mr Threepwood, why do you sound like a sick kraken? (like I said, there's a lot I love about Escape From Monkey Island. Fight me round 2!) 46:34 SPOILER ALERT have the authors ever explained the later retconning of H. Toothrot real identity in EFMI (which I like a lot as I said :) )? If he was actually H.T.Marley who got sunstroke and amnesia from crashing on Monkey Island™ then how he can be referred to as Toothrot in the ship log? 47:50 I love these kinds of puzzles, and in Monkey Island games they often come in a recurring version later where you combine real ingredients for something and then later in the game you must recreate it with random improvised junk. It can even be said that the voodoo root recipe from later in the game is that kind of puzzle. 1:02:38 as an ESL user this was the puzzle that caused me the most problems the first time. That and the red herring. Also the head is way creepier in the original graphics style. 1:03:28 The fine leather jacket salesman option would have been perfect here 1:17:41 You can find the secret of Monkey Island™ in the Ron Gilbert Library in the Mansion Mansion in Thimbleweed Park. And it will surprise you!

Superb video 👏 you have done the game proud and definitely spoke from the heart. I cannot express what this game means to me but watching this truly brings back all the glorious memories. I also enjoyed the special additions but think they completely messed up with Stans voice. Before the voice overs I imagined Stan to talk very fast in keeping with his insane arm movements so to hear him speak so slowly was out in my opinion. The rest of the voice cast was perfect (almost - like you said the cannibals not so much) awesome vid though - on to the next - can’t wait to see what you say about “that” ending 👍

Jess Harnell (Wakko Warner) also provided some voice acting for some of the characters in this game! He voices Bill Fettuccini, Estevan - the SCUMM Bar Pirate (the 2009 Special edition credits the character as "Estervan" so idk what that's about), Pirate Leader I, the Store Keeper that pervs on Carla, and Sword-Head Ghost. Plus he later went on to voice LeChuck in Return to Monkey Island! (Sure it's not Earl Boen, and I would've loved to have heard Boen voice LeChuck on more time before he passed, but as a a lifelong fan of Jess Harnell, Harnell did a fantastic job bringing his own thing to the role!)

5:30 I did pretty much the same transition to the title drop in my analysis :) It's hard not to! ^_^ But seriously dude, that's a mighty fine video you've crafted! Better than Ahoy's, if I do say so myself - his was more of an adventure genre retrospective (as in - of the whole genre), but yours was, like, an actual (and great!) retrospective of SoMI. The idea of integrating the voice over from the special edition doesn't sit well with me, though... In my video I go quite a bit in-depth as to why the written format of dialogue in SoMI works so well, especially with the game's style of humor (for example the dog conversation becomes completely ruined with a voice over). It's basically a dialogue format that is completely unique to that type of game, merging formats of written play and film. Having voice over merely turns the game into a cartoon with subtitles, aka, into something generic, rather than something one-of-a-kind, like the original voiceless dialogue format.

I am a sucker for any in depth content of Monkey Island series. And the love for the series goes a long way for me. Back in the very early 90s I used to sneak into my big brothers room when he was away to play on our 386 located in his room. I didn't really know which games he owned so I just picked up something and tried to play them. Most games were ran straight from floppies as hard drive space was scarse. We were subscribed to a computer magazine which had game reviews, hints and walkthroughs alongside ads, software and hardware reviews. I had read the issue from 1990 which had the review for this game and I was left in awe. And when I noticed by brother had a copy of the said game, the early EGA version - I used all the time I could playing it. Being a finnish boy who just had started to learn english at school I had to keep a dictionary nearby as the EGA version had the verbs and inventory written in text. Translating all the dialogue, swordfighting was just trial and error and writing down the right answers.. But I could say that Monkey Island series played a big role for perfecting my english and also made me so enthuasist about it at school. A few years later I got my hands on a copy of LeChuck's Revenge which was just all that I had learned to love but more. And ever since I've played through every one of the games released and I have liked them all. There is just something really captivating for me about the stories told of the Tri Island area. I just can't get enough and would like to always see more. Every time they seem to have the same charm as they did for the 9 year old me. I eventually finished that said playthrough of the EGA version of TSoMI done in secret and that experience which took forever to complete is something that changed the way I see games for good.

This is easily one of, if not the best video you've made. Love the editing and the jokes and you had genuinely great commentary. Super excited for the later parts (especially Curse of Monkey Island!). I think the only thing I'd like to see in the later videos is less "explaining the plot/puzzles in order" and more discussing the creation of the game, the impact, your thoughts and history, etc. - more personal stuff, really. There was a lot of that in this video already and those were definitely my favorite bits (though in fairness most of your best jokes came from the "explaining the plot/puzzles" parts)

Oh wow, Freddie was the inspiration for Threepwood? I get that reference; one of my mates binged the Blandings series with me. I think it's fair to say this game was the bread and butter Connor has been working towards this whole time. I am STOKED! I am EXCITED! I am STRAPPED IN, so let's go!

I discovered the ultimate talkie edition very recently... It's what I've wanted since Curse of Monkey Island was released. Absolutely fantastic.

I don’t have access to the special edition but thank you for telling me about the ultimate talkie patch! It looks amazing and when I can get a copy I’ll totally install it. Until then I’m gonna use a voice patched version of the original running in SCUMMVM since it seems to be my best option rn.

I've been aware of the Secret of Monkey Island's existence for at least 20 years, but I only got to play it for the first time earlier this year. And now, whenever I hear the main theme, I get chills. No nostalgia speaking here. The game is just that good. It's not even my personal favorite of the LucasArts adventure games (Sam & Max Hit the Road, which I also played for the first time this year, holds that place), but as far as I can tell it is the best. It's THE genre-defining point and click game, in my opinion. An absolute masterpiece. I'm still hoping for a Switch port to come out so I can play it on the go.

This was the first game I ever bought. For my Amiga 500. Back in 1991. In a time where getting new games was usually done by pirating them. Funny that the first game I spent real money on was about pirates.

Amazing video Connor! I love the in-depth analysis you went it to, really looking forward to other videos in the series. I watched you a lot couple of years earlier, but my subbox was broken I guess, glad to see you upload more videos again! Yarr!

17:30 A recurring theme in the Monkey Island series, that someone pointed out, is figuring out what constitutes an acceptable substitute for something you need but don't have. For example, a pot as a helmet.

You sound like you come from the same area I do. Combined with the Monkey Island nostalgia it's very comforting. Damn good video.

Love this! Great video. Played through the original trilogy over the past few weeks, tend to revisit every 8 years or so having started on my brother's floppy disks in the 90s. This time through was definitely the most I've enjoyed Curse. Launched escape this afternoon and had immediate regrets.. it's SO clunky, hasn't aged well at all..

I forgot all about the ingredients listed on the recipe and just threw everything I had into the pot. Of course Guybrush wouldn't let me use anything that would be essential later. It was only on a replay I got many of the jokes on the list. Also if you don't talk to Otis about joining your crew before releasing him then you get some dialogue with Guybrush asking and Otis half heartedly agreeing before making his escape with the "look behind you, a three headed monkey" trick.

Nice review, if rather tedious in narrative. :^| You also left out some of built-in innuendo: - If you try to use the navigator's head while invisible on the ship (~1:06:00), Gaybrush Dropkick protests "I can't whip it out HERE!" :^D - When Gaybrush Thriftstore is told about the wedding (~1:08:30) and that LeUpchuck and Elaine will "elope" (?), he can respond with "But how will they...?"
