People can call it a toy commercial all they want, but this show had more care and dedication put into it from its writers and producers than most cartoons made these days.

He-Man came out at the right place and at the right time. It was produced by passionate people who were not afraid to work hard and to push the envelope. It paid off big time for all involved. If you were a kid (or a kid at heart) during the 80s, He-Man was most definitely a part of your life one way or another.

Interesting you mention "GhostBusters", because Filmation originally owned the rights to the name"Ghost Busters". in 1975, Filmation released a live-action version (NOT related to the 1984 Ramis/Aykroyd written comedy film) as a kids' show. Filmation threatened to sue Columbia Pictures for the misuse of the title. So, in 1986, ABC Released the Saturday Morning Cartoon as "The REAL Ghostbusters" while Filmation released the animated version as "Filmation's Ghost Busters".

I loved shows with morals and messages. The ones for children would, of course, need to be explained plainly and gently without condescention for kids. The ones written for teens and adults would include the moral or life lesson in the dialogue of the characters themselves and would deal with more weighty issues. Again, no patronizing, give the audience credit for being intelligent to pick the messages up themselves!

This is all quite interesting! It's especially fun to see the models for the rotoscope animation posing in their costumes. It would be nice to see a doc about the early development of the toys, too, which used Mattel's Big Jim line as a starting point and a very Jack Kirby-like design aesthetic to all the costumes and vehicles.

+Jeremy Backes Paul Dini has talked in the past about how much of a nightmare it was to work on the show because of all the censorship that existed there. They were just terribly afraid of doing something that would cause parents to not let their kids watch it anymore. What's funny is that I'm an 80's kid and still a huge He-Man fan to this day but I look back on things I loved in the 80's like RoboCop and Karate Kid and they actually had tons of foul language and RoboCop had incredible violence and I'm like "How did my parents let me watch this???" LOL!!!

DuckTalesWooHoo1987 geeze. I wasnt sheltered at all as a kid in the 80s. I could watch anything from violent toons to movies and t.v. shows, and my folks never thought twice about it, and i turned out just fine. I can remember a dept store called Hills back in the 80s, and they would have characters dressed in He-Man costumes doing meet and greets with kids on saturdays. My dad showed me the posting in the newspaper, and i flipped. "YA GOTTA TAKE ME, YA GOTTA TAKE ME!!!" I can still remember that being the day i had seen my first yellow fire truck. Heck, i think i was more fascinated by that than the people in masks and puffed up costumes. As a child, i was hoping more for real muscle bound freaks that i literally thought were the characters, especially a talking skull all dressed in blue and purple!

I honestly didnt think u would know of Hills to be honest. Yep, Childrens Palace was a Panda bear like Petey the Panda or somethin. He sounded like Woody Allen. Ugh. Irritating. Dam, thats memories right there. We were so lucky to have been blessed to live through that great decade for cool toys, cartoon, and the awesome toy stores back then. Now Toys R Us stands alone i guess. 😕 I remember my 8 yr old birthday party was at a lakeside park in my town, and it was all Thundercat themed as my mom had told me all my T-Cat toys had came from Childrens Palace. You can still see one of the crowned turrets i think in the shopping center where my local store once set. So sad.

Yeah I was born in 1982 so I'm a total 80's kid for sure. I still collect 80's figures to this day and have a huge TMNT and He-Man collection. I collect them in the box and have about 50 of the original TMNT line still in the box. My gameroom is epic. LOL! I've still got my Grayskull, Snake Mountain, Slime Pit and Fright Zone all on glorious display. I also have Point Dread and the Talon Fighter on top of my Grayskull. It looks awesome. I have a ton of Ghostbusters as well and also love Thundercats and all the old WWF Hasbro toys as well. I have all of the Nick line of TMNT on the walls with some of the 2003 TMNT line hanging on the wall too. It's like nerd mecca. LOL!

I'm sorry but Janis Diamond doesn't have a clue about what she says in this documentary. Janis was not the only woman to write for He-Man. J. Brynne Stephens (aka Brynne Chandler) also wrote for the show, and more episodes too. Janis wrote only 2 episodes, #24 and #30 in season 1. Brynne wrote 7 episodes, those being #'s 10, 14, 17, 22, and 33 in season 1, and #s 71 and 89 in season 2. This was a decent documentary, but it left a lot out, and gave into disinformation for whatever reason, which is not cool in my book. Feels like Brynne got blacklisted here.
@jslim398

+Ten Craftsmen J. Brynne Stephens (as she was then known) was indeed the female writer these documentarians should have talked to. She was there from the beginning and the first woman to write for the show -- and although at least 11 women received writing credits on He-Man, she was the only female writer who was a regular contributor. J. Brynne Stephens - 7 episodes Janis Diamond - 3 episodes (not 2 … you’re missing “Like Father, Like Daughter”) Misty Stewart - 3 episodes Phyllis White - 1 episode Beth Bornstein - 1 episode D.C. Fontana - 1 episode Shelley Karol - 1 episode Barbara Chain - 1 episode Jina Bacarr - 1 episode Karen (billed as “Cinnamon”) Wengrod - 1 episode Karen Wilson - 1 episode Note that I’ve been unable to track down info on “Lee Robert” (1 episode) and “Leslie Wilson” (2 episodes), and both these names are ambiguous in terms of gender. Neither of these writers have writing credits outside of He-Man (and in Wilson’s case, She-Ra.)

Yeah. I'm good friends with Brynne Chandler. She told me she was asked, but declined for personal reasons at that time. But still, she she should've had a mention, or at best Janis Diamond's part should have been omitted because it is 100% false. She was not the only female writer for He-Man.

It can't be blamed, really. Filmation was hindered by the guidelines of the television industry at the time, but I agree, the mini-comics did have much more to it. Which begs to question why the Mike Young show didn't go about reviving the comics instead.

Y'know, that would work to He-Man's benefit if they married elements from the mini-comics and the new series. I would however keep Skeletor's background sacrosanct, like in the comics. King Greyskull was a good addition, I thought, sort of like what you'd find in the barbarian storyline.

They covered this subject later in the series, when it was explained somewhere, (can't remember where) that Duncan and Teela Na were lovers, while she was the second sorceress. God, I can't remember, so I shouldn't be saying it. But it was covered in series somewhere later. I always wished they could have gotten the chance to explain why Duncan and The Sorceress loved each other in secret, because it's such a great side character story. Some traditionally fashioned Joy and Pathos story writing, and FOR A KIDS SHOW no less.

Apropos "married" - just a thought: There was this one She-Ra episode, where Castaspella learned about Adora´s brother Adam - and immediately pulled him through her magic fountain into her castle! ^oo^ What if these two eventually get married - Adam with the power of Greyskull and Casta with her own powers... What powers their kids would have!!! ;-D ...now we just need a fitting partner for Adora/She-Ra... Sea Hawk and Bow don´t have special powers, so who could fit for her?

Okay, the rumor is that the Mattel toy company was going to produce the toy line for the original Conan movie, but backed out last minute to preserve PR b/c conan was such a violent movie. Problem was that they had already created the conan figures, so they repainted them, renamed them and he-man was born. The Arnie incident kinda gives credence to the rumor, especially if arnie was supposed to get a cut from the toy sales. If it is true, then it's ironic that the toy inspired by a movie would end up inspiring it's own movie... which was bad.
