@@SubBrief Giving a shout out to my second favorite sonar tech!
@tonywilson4713
Жыл бұрын
@@SubBrief HEY AARON: I love the fact you emphasized that there need to be a human in the loop with these drone systems. I am an aerospace engineer. I work in industrial control systems and am certified in programable safety systems. So I have a very good understanding of how real time software that takes information from sensor systems and uses it to run things actually operate and what RELIABILITY MEANS in those systems. I have this great fear that just as with the Boeing Max-8 we are going to have a lot more very bad things happen because people who DO NOT understand the technologies are making massive decisions that OTHER PEOPLE will pay the price for. My greater fear is NOT people like your self who have served or do serve in the military. You are all trained to be disciplined. When things don't work, you find out why, you fix the problem and move on. But the salesman from the company who's selling stuff to the military DOES NOT have to care if something is 70, 80, 90 or 99% reliable because he's NEVER going to be on the battle field. The salesman's job is convincing the politician to buy what he's selling. Sorry if the next part is lengthy. When people like me are doing safety systems is annoys the absolute crap out of people. FIRST safety does not have any economic value that's easily measured so all the accountants and economists just see us as an annoying extra cost with no benefit. THEN all the other engineers hate us because the first thing we ask is _"What happens when it DOESN'T work?"_ Every other engineer on a project (no matter what industry) is trying to build something and make it work. They are NOT interested in being asked about their stuff failing. In safety the first thing we talk about is RELIABILTY and NOTHING is 100% reliable. You can get 99%, 99.9%, 99.99%,... etc but never get 100% reliability EXCEPT for the fact that everything will eventually fail or wear out. You should know this from your time in the Navy because there's parts you replace for no other reason than they'd been in place for a certain time. Anyone who's been around aircraft knows the same thing. Do you know that the diamond tipped tools they use in CNC lathes and mills wear out? YES the actual diamond itself eventually wears out. So you should be able to see why someone with my background freaks out when I hear about these autonomous systems being marketed as 100% RELIABLE. The real problem I see with AI and autonomous systems are the people who DON'T understand the technology well enough to understand the limits of use and the maintenance required. The other things with these complex software systems are people changing parameters. Its one thing many people do NOT ever seem to understand. You can make what seems like the most harmless change to a complex system and it can cause chaos. I have actually had experiences where people did make slight changes to systems and then days later chaos rained down on us. I bet you probably had that happen as a sonar tech when someone changed a parameter and didn't tell anyone AND THEN when you had problems days later and they said something like "Oh yeah we changed that parameter last week!!" So I think you are absolutely right to point out how important it is to have humans in the loop with these systems. If you do want to have a person to person discussion about this stuff let me know, because there are too few people like you stressing the need to be careful with these systems.

I'm not a big fan of the "one big vs. many smaller" combat assets. They may be more capable, but, now you have one very significant point of 'failure'. Regardless of size, rotations for crew relief, maintenance and repairs, etc. are still necessary, but now done over fewer assets so coverage/real time combat capability are reduced rather than enhanced or even sustained. Realistcally, it seems to me that the availability of all 5 at any given time would be a rarity. More than likely two or more would be in maintenance queue or extended dry dock than anything. If ONE of these goes against, say a CCP/Rus task force with three "normal" carrier groups, this Ford class is not returning to port, unless it can run away fast enough. 5 of these Ford class vs. 12 of the current class is a downgrade in capability/ability to stay in the fight. If all we have is one "super ship" to face a dozen enemy combatants in any given theatre, then the prime task is going to be avoidance of combat rather than seeking out and destroying our enemies. This type is type of build/strategy you get from a bunch of desk bound gamers, not people that have spent time on the sharp end. IMO - YMMV
@Tuning3434
Жыл бұрын
@glaytony Well, that is kind of the strategy the NATO and USN allied forces are going for, isn't it? The Royal Navy build the QE's mostly to support USN activities with an F35 force. New build USN LPDs are being equipped with F35s just like the JMSDF 'helicopter destroyers' are. And the last members of the Nimitz class will serve on in the 2050's. So with drone technology only becoming more dominant, it feels like the USN is also implementing high-low mix assets in the carrier force. Keep an eye out on amphibious new-builds.

I am wondering that since unmanned vehicle operation almost inevitably generate noise, and that unmanned vehicles seem great as low-observable sensors, if this will swing naval warfare back away from submarines and towards surface ships. If ASW frigates in the future can deploy dozens of semi-submersibles forming a perimeter that submarines will struggle to detect and cannot attack without revealing their own positions, the submarines will find it more difficult to attack the ASW frigate or any capital ships it is escorting.
