Leaving RB at the time was the correct decision, DR was going to be #2, if he wasn't going to win he might as well get a pay check (which he did at Renault). His form was getting on top of the Renault & I believe he should've stayed at Renault as he was beginning to get results. I believe once he left Renault, that's when the Stella/Renault issue emerged with the withdrawal of Renault to Alpine (think they knew they payed him too much for the little return they got, especially when he left early) McLaren was a disaster

Yeah great analysis. More than anything it shows that to be one of the true greats you've gotta be truly great (if that makes sense). Saying that is to say this, whilst Daniel never won a World Championship, I am sure there is more than a many modern World Champions who Daniel could cover in the right car. But, he hasn't got the adaptibility of a true great like an Alonso or probably most notoriously a Senna - and the timing of his career never worked out. He had Red Bull at his feat in the only modern period where they weren't fighting for titles, and then arguable the greatest young talent of all time came out of nowhere and showed his class. Then, Renault started to fall back right as it looked like they would start to fight for wins, and eventually the McLaren struggles - which I think were compounded by the introduction of even bigger, heavier cars - the likes of which Daniel has never got his head around. In a hypothetical world where his career was brough forward 10 years (lets say 2002-2014), he would've been a champion, of that I have no doubt.

Not at one with the car was a point made previously with regard to Daniel. Claims were that the car was tailored to suit Lando's driving style. Not sure to what extent that's the case.

Daniel was known for his late braking, and the Red Bull was set up for short-corner driving because Max and Daniel had similar driving styles. Lewis predicted the downfall of McLaren when he left for Mercedes and McLaren, a mid-tier car from when Lewis left until mid-2023. Andrea Stella has turned around the McLaren by getting the processes right. In 2023, McLaren focused on improving the car for medium and high-speed corners, only to find a good allrounder for all corners and tracks. The timing for Daniel at McLaren was wrong. The timing for Oscar Piastri has been brilliant. Lando has never known any other F1 car besides the McLaren. He learned to live with a difficult car to drive, which makes him a great qualifier now. Lando now has a preferred driving style based on the McLaren. Oscar has learnt to drive the problematic McLaren car despite having a short-corner driving style like Max and Charles. Fortunately for Oscar, McLaren improved significantly after six months in the seat; thus, he hasn’t been ingrained to drive only one way. Oscar can attack a corner multiple ways, which has improved his overtaking capabilities. Oscar can: - can late brake his competitor - attack on the inside line - attack around the outside line - strategic attack using multiple corners, set the competitor to defend the first and then overtake on the second corner All the while, Oscar reads the grip conditions before arriving at the corner. This is why many F1 experts think Oscar has a higher ceiling than Lando. It is also clear that Oscar has become good at managing tyres, which was previously a problem area, and using this strategically to overtake competitors in the later stages of the race. Oscar is also learning how to minimise losses on bad weekends. Daniel was a bit unlucky as he had a possible GOAT as his teammate, but Lando may start facing the same challenges that Daniel did. If Daniel hadn’t had Max as his teammate, Daniel could have ended up being a WDC winner.

That "lando has never known anything different so he can deal with it" was a BS excuse made by a driver that couldnt cope with a team mate that was more adaptable than him. It is utter tosh. It sums up exactly why i cant stand the guy - no introspection, no acknowledging responsibility. The guy has now been sacked from a second team before the end of the season and fanbois are still repeating this tripe

Yeah look Daniel ultimately failed to adapt to a quickly changing sport. Look at Alonso who used to chuck the car around in the Renault days and has had to completely reinvent himself. This is what Danny failed to do, in my opinion

If Ricciardo couldn't beat Max on an equal machinery, I doubt he could beat Lewis in the prime of Mercedes (2021) which was the only time Red Bull had a chance in championship in the previous regulation era. Remember that Max's 2021 championship was only won by the skin on his teeth with the helped of a very controversial decision by Masi. VCARB's current car was pretty much Red Bull's 2023 car (which was derived from 2022). Considering how Ricciardo struggled right now in VCARB I would say him winning the championship in 2022 against the Ferrari (like what Max did) will also be doubtful if he ended up struggling with RB18. 2023 was the only time where Red Bull has no real competition. But note that's only for Max's case. Sergio almost lost 2nd to Lewis on a struggling car. and RB19 is the template for current VCARB car, (the car that sealed Ricciardo's fate). Though I would say that his real potential competition in 2023 would be whoever his team mate is in Red Bull.

Nice analysis. You mention DR braking deeper in early comparisonthen pointed out Lando braking later in more recent case. Why was Daniel wring and Lando right? People tend to always compare high speed corners, but significant gains can be made in very low speed corners by being just a few kph faster.
@LowerLaptime

@@djholster676 In the first examples, i could see this was technique repeated, for example, in the long corners In the latter, i could see it was a confidence thing - lando just outbroke and everything else on the mid and exit was the same. Does that make sense?

There is only word that describes Daniels downfall in F1. It is Verstappen. When Red Bull showed favoritism to Max in 2018, there was no way he could compete on a level playing field there. Eight DNFs that year that were not his fault confirm that something underhand was at play. He really had no alternative but to leave and look for greener pastures. Of course, he could have stayed and accepted number two driver status but no driver worth his salt would do that. As it turned out at Renault and McLaren, he only rubbed salt into his wounded pride. I think Ferrari was his only option to get back to winning ways, but they snubbed him, and l won't say why but it wasn't for his lack of performance. After that it was just a matter of time before he would end up the way he did in Singapore. You can say what you like about coaches, but when a team is not favoring you, you can't win no matter how good you are.
