Thank you for this. Getting back into playing marimba after 20 years (playing in a community and and have a marimba to play now). It’s hard to know where to start. These help.

A bit late to the party, but thanks for the video! I came to check you out as my friend recently got into the UNT School of Music. and my private lesson teacher speaks very highly of you; I can safely say I was not disappointed. I will be watching all of your content. P.S. I'm a big fan of your compositions!

2:10 Sounds like one of the overtones is less pronounced. I can see that being useful.

Hey! Great video! I would argue though that the position of the hands is not quite the determening factor but rather how you go about executing the stroke. You can use a relaxed stroke and end up with your hands high and you can do a tense stroke and end with your hands low. I mean I agree with the concept and think its important to think about but hand position is relavtive on what tecnique you use. Secondly, Posture is a really important think to talk and think about. It'd be great if you would also cover situations where you're not simply playing C - G C -G . Take for example Eb - G Eb - G or C - Ab E - Bb, you probably would not stay straight to the marimba. Its important to move with the music and adjust your position and posture acordingly.

Thank you for your response! These videos are to encourage students with performance fundamentals and tone production concepts. The bottom line is that the player's touch and feel is an essential ingredient for tone production. That being said, correct posture combined with strong playing spots for even balance and blend across the instrument will ensure better tone quality as the student develops his/her approach with the music. Regarding your 2nd point, yes there are absolutely chordal positions and register shifts etc. in music that may cause the player to adjust posture. However, the "set" position should be one that is straight and square to the marimba, again to ensure better accuracy and consistent tone production. Thank you again for your comments! Best wishes!

i have a question im going into grade 7 band having not done band last year because of covid and not being able to read notes very well, i heard someone say that marimba and piano are very similar with the notes is it true and if it is, is in a bad idea for me to play it, not knowing how to play piano

Thanks for your message. Yes, both the piano and marimba use the same keyboard organization and definitely knowledge of playing the piano helps with marimba lessons. However, it is not a requirement. Many begin marimba lessons with little or no experience on the piano. Think of it this way, your marimba lessons will someday help your piano skills! ;-).
