Paul was a guitar player prior to joining Tool in 1990. He left the band because he felt unsatisfied creatively and wanted to get back to guitar. At that point he created the band Lush. My band Thunderin' Reign opened up for Tool a couple of times at the Mason Jar in Phoenix in 92. The Phoenix New Times just posted an article about this, written by Benjamin Leatherman. I just came from watching the Rig Rundown with Justin so this was surprisingly convenient timing, my band and I went to see Tool back in November and it was one of the coolest shows I’ve ever seen (and not just because they brought out Alex Lifeson for Jambi/Passage to Bangkok), we also played Sober at our most recent show last year so that was definitely a lot of fun since we’ve been saving it since our second show because we never had an opportunity to play it but it was definitely fun to finally unveil it especially with my own Rickenbacker (On a side note to Ian, it was a Rick that he played on the album because in the music video for the song you can briefly get a glimpse of him playing it when some images of the band show up)

I hit Lateralis pretty hard when it came out (full album, not just the song) and saw them live both for Lateralis release and then 10,000 Days after it came out. Saw them live for Fear Inoculum as well. My favorite album, influenced by the live performance is Lateralis. Choco-chip Trip live, certainly made that performance and album a very close 2nd. But 10,000 Days may still be the best composed art ever put out.

That schism main riff sounds the aboslute best when he plays it lower (opens on the A string and accents on the D) bridging between the main riff and the heavier riffs on the dropped D string. So much meatier on those middle strings instead of the D and G.
