Electronic noses may be slow getting to market, but there are already dogs, and rats, that are aiding in medical diagnostics. Tuberculosis, some cancers, I believe even diabetes can be detected by amazing animals that are trained by amazing people. The ability to screen a large group of people quickly and cost effectively can give huge benefits, especially to isolated rural populations. The more we learn can be detected through changes in secretions, the more we may be seeing our furry friends in the frontline of healthcare!

Ear wax is a protection your body is making to keep the inside of your ears hydrated and to protect it from bacteria and small debris. Cleaning your ears (using something like a q tips) can also damage the inside, lead to irritation, infection... and you can end up pushing the wax inside the ear, which can lead to all kind of problem. In other words: cleaning the inside of our ears is an habit a lot of people have (including myself) but this is not good doing it. It clean itself and should be left alone. If too much is building up, there is some product that exist to help it the natural cleaning process.

Sometimes I wonder if why we are afraid of needles. Like, when we are growing up we are told that they are bad and to never take one from someone, but then we get stabbed with them for vaccinations. To add on: while growing up, we aren't told why we have to get stabbed with needles. It just "has" to happen, even though needles are "bad." So this, just from my own thoughts and life experience, is why I think a vast majority of people have an overactive fear of needles.
@yYSilverFoxYy

@@joshua.recovers No one ever told me that needles are bad. Who does that even? It was the fact that I HAD TO stay still while someone stabs me with a needle. There’s no avoiding shots. I've had quick earwax build up for a few years. Doctor told me that it's due to me being stressed, and that earwax is created by the same or similar glands as the ones that produce sweat. Hello, I’m a welder by trade. It’s a loud job; 40 hours per week I’m grinding, hammering, welding (and sometimes dropping) chunks of steel. Every night after my shower, I need to use a cotton swab to gently clean inside my ear canals. It’s always surprising the quantity of “shmag” that wipes away. If I don’t do this, it builds up and completely blocks my hearing. Pre-Covid, I was also an active musician who depended on good hearing. Drumming, and playing in bands is also loud. Years ago I hypothesized, “what if ear wax is actually the body’s natural defence against loud environments? I do wear hearing protection now, and haven’t experienced a proper blockage in some time, but when I was young, dumb and invincible, I didn’t care much about personal protection. Lots of ear wax in those days. The kind that sent you to a walk-in clinic. Anyone else wonder about this?

I'm a type one diabetic, been so since I was 2 years old. My readings were always pretty bad because I was always downright terrified of finger pokes and even more terrified of getting my blood drawn every three months. When you mentioned saliva was similar to blood, does this mean that possibly diabetics could get these diagnostic tests done less invasively? I'm an adult now and still have a fear of needles. (admittedly, I have been taking poor care of my T1D because of this, but that's another can of worms) and I hate to think of more children having to be traumatised from such a young age because of the way this disease is treated.

This reminds me of a thought I once had for a medical assistant I would have named Second Oppinon. It would be a mobile arch that as a person steps through it would take an x-ray and ask for a breath or other sample, and then use data gathered coupled with a sophisticated data base to give a diagnose. This was just an idea, but an AI able to do this with data from several secretions and such could really help with patent diagnosis.

Earwax may or may not give a good history depending on how much earwax you produce. I especially produce earwax at an absurdly fast rate so i constantly need to clean my ears or i can get very uncomfortable, itchy ear canals ( I try to only do it once or twice monthly but i often times get earwax on the outside of my ear by then since there’s just so much, my body can’t get rid of it on its own) Since i make new earwax at such a fast rate, Wouldn’t my earwax not give as much health history as someone who takes a longer time to build up as much earwax as me? If that’s the case, then earwax may not be such a reliable way to get data on changes in your health, But i certainly wouldn’t mind a free ear cleaning by a doctor :)
