@BabyGirlDontEvenPlay "changing the world" is a relative thing, since it occurs in varying degrees. Making viewers aware of injustices against persecuted people (such as the Palestinians) has plenty of legitimacy to it. Not everything Banksy does fits that description, but when he brings problems to light then people can become involved in finding solutions. Gotta admit: Banksy is plenty smart on how to generate lots of publicity. His tactic of remaining anonymous is one clever way to become world famous.
@rr7firefly

@BabyGirlDontEvenPlay Maybe you should pay attention to what is going on with artists of note. Banksy's oeuvre is hardly an unknown quantity. His projects have been well known and documented since the 1990s. Banksy's documentary film "Exit Through the Gift Shop" (2010) was screened at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. In January 2011, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for that film. In 2014, he was awarded Person of the Year at the 2014 Webby Awards. So he is hardly an unknown newcomer.

I was still living in New Orleans when Banksy visited and left us a lot of his works. I got photos of all but one, which was painted over really soon after Banksy finished. It's a shame, too bc it was second line playing. The flying refrigerator was also quickly pained over but I got it beforehand! I still have all the pictures and I cherish them. I believer there is only one left intact bc it was secured with plexiglass(?). It's on the old Drop-In Center wall, on Rampart. It was super special to get to see so much of his work up close and in person.

I can't understand how he's managed to stay anonymous this long with all the clues he's put out, from partial photos showing his hands and hair and even an elbow tattoo to a purported recreation of his childhood bedroom showing which movies and books he likes. Granted, the man in the photos might not be him at all, and the details of his bedroom might be made up. But I still can't believe he's never been found out. All I can say is, more power to him!

I like Banksy. I think he's great fun. However, as a Bristolian I found it rather strange to find my native city described as "the working class town of Bristol". Yes, there are working class districts and poverty there but there are also very wealthy areas. In fact, it has the third largest average salary (after London and Edinburgh) of any major city in the UK. What it also has is a strong tradition of rebellion as well as of creating great art and music.
@melt8662
2 ай бұрын
But for the sake of the narrative of "the underdog champion, graffiti artist" we really want to hear about how he's a working class kid from the working class city. We don't wanna hear about the fact that he's actually from an upper middle class household in a really nice city in the south east of England; and that he learned how to spray paint not in an alley, but in an after school program.
@gdsongwriter
2 ай бұрын
@@melt8662 Bristol is in the south west of England. It's rumoured that Banksy comes from a middle class family and went to one of Bristol's most prestigious schools. However, it's well documented that he got in with the Barton Hill crowd of "graffiti artists" as a teenager and Barton Hill is very much a working class area in east Bristol.

The public loves the artwork. If they are fools, then every piece of art anyone admires makes one a fool. The fools are those that don't look at the art for what it is, but a trophy and investment to harbor. Ironically, it is those same people that would outlaw his work to begin with. There is a wide swath between admiring a piece of art to coveting it for treasure and nothing more.
