why does this feel more like a physics class rather than a chemistry class. I can't stop imagining my physics teacher in my head

We are told about ionisation in 9th but when I asked about the ionisation of H2O they said that it will be taught in higher class , thanks for this

I have question that why Oxygen Didn't loose both hydrogen attached to it And why not there is formation of h4O+2 and O2- Please answer
@ScienceBeetle
3 жыл бұрын
Hello there. The simple answer is that once water takes one proton it forms hydronium (H3O) and it has a positive charge. Any other proton that potentially could bind won't actually bind because there are would be high repulsive forces between the positive charged hydronium and the positive proton.

Corrections: #1 at 2:05 = The Hydroxide Ion should have been written with 3 lone(unbonded) electron pairs on the Oxygen (not 2 pairs), and the Hydronium Ion at 2:20 would have 1 lone/unbonded electron pair. #2 at 3:37 when the Kw equation is written, it needs to be stated that the value of constant depends on the Temperature of the solution, and that it is equal to 1 X 10 E(-14) when the Temperature is 25 degrees Celsius. If the Temperature is not at 25 degrees-Celsius, then Kw will have a different value.

2:23 why H3O is H+
@ScienceBeetle
4 жыл бұрын
The H3O+ is often represented as the H+ in the equations when we want to calculate H+ ion concentration, they are essentially the same thing. But because protons (H+) don't really exist in an aq solution the H3O+ is the way we represent it. Hope that helps.

why do we call (H3O)+ as h+
@ScienceBeetle
4 жыл бұрын
The H3O+ is essentially hydrogenated water, that is, it is a conjugate acid of water (a base). As such, it is able to share a proton in aqueous solution.

why water under goes self ionization
@ScienceBeetle
3 жыл бұрын
Hello, the reason water is able to do this is because water can engage in a single proton exchange with another water molecule. When this occurs, the acid (H3O+) and (OH-) ions products are formed. They in turn react with each other to reform water as H2O. This reaction is reversible and occurs with the same rate as the forward reaction to form the ions. Keep watching and keep learning.

But h2o is stable so why oxygen take hydrogen
@ScienceBeetle
5 жыл бұрын
You are right, water is stable. But this is what water does when itself ionizes. It readily takes hydrogen from a nearby water molecule, and the resulting hydroxide can reclaim it right back. The "taking" and "reclaiming" happen at equal rates.
