I'm still always mortified to hear that de-clawing is even legal anywhere. In Australia this has been illegal for ages. De-clawing outside of medical reasons just seems unthinkable. I really do think that if you are not prepared to work around the species you're bringing into your home, then don't do it. I have 3 Burmese and have found this isn't a problem. I trim their claws regularly and provide many other options for them to claw on. It'll be great to see some more progression towards more respect for animals and their adorable ways that cause us to love them. In Australia, there is no ear trimming, tail docking or de-barking of dogs either - c'mon guys, we can do better for our fur family.

You might like to consider the idea that some of the other rules and regulations in Australia come from a similar mindset and they're not so bad. I'm not saying we get everything right in Australia all the time - but, for starters, we don't have people missing out on medical treatment because they are poor. We aren't in danger of having theocracy imposed upon us. The death penalty has been abolished both at federal and state levels. We have many, many less gun death per capita than you do. In fact, the better access to health care and the comparative scarcity of guns both contribute towards us having a greater life expectancy than people in the US. I completely agree! It's still hard to believe that declawing was just made illegal in Maryland a few months ago. I have three cats and the older two that belong to my mother are declawed. They don't experience any pain and seem happy as far as we can tell, but who knows how much happier they'd be if their bodies had been left alone. The third cat, who's mine has her claws and she's had NO problems with scratching since I brought her home. Whenever I ask my mother if she regrets getting the other two declawed after seeing that mine hasn't destroyed anything, she doesn't give a damn at all and it's absolutely insane. Like at the very least admit it was unnecessary. I don't get how people can mutilate their pets' bodies without even a second thought.

@@jtk3023❤ I’m sure of it! Growing up, my family took in a ragdoll, Monty, who my aunt, uncle and cousins “couldn’t take anymore”. The “final straw” was Monty jumping up on the bed and laying on the suit my aunt had laid out for my uncle to wear. Monty was a RAGDOLL - a breed known for their (gorgeous) thick, long, hair. The hair left on the suit was the dealbreaker. Our family has always been a cat-loving family and my parents agreed to take him when my aunt asked. He ended up being, one of my dad’s best friends. He followed him everywhere. He literally followed him while he was mowing the lawn- he would just walk behind my dad. When my dad worked in the yard, Monty would always be there to help. He was beautiful and smart. We all loved him, but my dad had a very special relationship with him. At several family get-togethers, my cousins told me they thought he was the “stupidest cat”- not knowing Monty was actually much smarter than them. I was and and still am so glad my parents took him in and away from the dense, ignorant, uneducated family who originally thought they “wanted him .“ He passed away 19 years ago, and my dad still talks about him and misses him❤. Never Declaw Club Here. My oldest cat HATED having his claws clipped, but he would let them grow long enough they curled and we HAD to clip them. He would make the worst noises when we tried to clip them (even our neighbors came over one day because they thought we were abusing him). We tried the thundershirts and a claw clip bag, but he still was so difficult about it. Even our vet tried to show us the "right way" but after him and three vet techs held our kitty down and managed to clip ONE claw, the vet just said "I think he is a candidate for declawing." Absolutely NOT. I worked with our kitty. I started by massaging his paws. He fought for a bit and then relaxed after a few months. Then I started extending his claws during the massages. Again, it took months until he didn't fight it. Then I start clipping one nail during the paw massages. Then two and so on, again for months. After a year or two, he is now very good about getting his claws clipped. Cats take patience. If you don't have patience, then don't own a cat.

Same here! I had a cat who absolutely did NOT like me clipping his claws and would fight tooth and nail (hah) when I tried. I did the same: expose him to me handling his claws very, very, veeeery slowly, doing just a tiny bit at a time. Then I started giving him treats while I'd handle his paws (once he didn't pull away immediately), and after maybe 3 or 4 months or so, I started clipping a claw or two every time. It worked really well and now he purrs as soon as I pick up the clippers, comes to me and starts rubbing against the clippers, although he's not even getting treats any more (it's been years!). And he was BAD!! I mean, he would even draw blood just to get away at first!!

Might get some hate for this.. But under normal, healthy circumstances I agree on the "don't declaw your cat", the only time it's really okay in my opinion is when there's a medical necessity for it. An example being we had a cat who yanked one of his claws enough that it was poking into the toe beside it. He was an indoor-outdoor cat, we only had the claw removed that he essentially declawed himself... Or so we thought, I think he grew the claw back after a few months. Then another cat kept getting really nasty infections in two of her toes/claws to the point she was turning mean. I don't think she was even a year old before we decided to remove only the problem claws.. After those claws were removed (the others she still has), she reverted back to being a sweetheart. So under normal conditions, I agree, don't declaw the kitty. But if it's a medical necessity? Do what's necessary.

When a vet recommends declawing, their license should be taken down and have a lifetime ban on ever being a vet! Thaaaaaaat is a butcher, not a vet! That's why I have a very hard time believing that these "vets" give a shit about their patient! They don't. They only see dollar signs. That's a heartless human. How can she/he work as a vet is beyond me! And it makes me oh so very, very furious! Additionally, I strongly disagree on the patience thing! To go through that for 2 years is torture! Why did you put yourself through that, when with ANOTHER cat, you would not have to go through that! Your comment must at least state that "SOME cats require patience". Most do not! Most are alright and don't need the ludicrous, unfathomable stress that you put yourself through! When someone who doesn't have patience reads that, they will think, oh I can't get a cat, but that's not accurate at all. For that person can get along fine with most cats that are chill. But if you do meet one that isn't, yeah good luck, mission impossible!

When he passed away in his mid-teens, my friend and their spouse wanted to get another cat... and the spouse was determined that the new cat would also be declawed, to save their young kids and their furniture. It was a campaign of sending them digital pamphlets and videos, and drawing correlations from research to their own previous cat's behaviours, but eventually they decided not to declaw. Three years later, their new cat never bites, swats without extending her claws (and only if provoked beyond reason), uses her litter box and scratching posts, and is frequently described by both as "the perfect cat." My old lady was deemed very antisocial and prone to aggression. She trusts us so much she never scratches and bites us unless by accident (she shakes her paws real quick to retract her claws as if apologizing), we respect her boundaries and learnt to read her facial expressions and movements that tell us she doesn't want to interact, so she doesn't feel like showing her boundaries no more. I had an ingrown toenail removed and some of my nail had to be cut too, the top of my toe hurt so bad anytime that exposed part was touched. I can't even begin to imagine what it's like for a cat who is declawed. Losing a part of one nail on one foot drove me nuts, I can't even imagine what it would be like for all of them to be gone. there is a huge difference between removal of an ingrown toenail and declawing, I have ingrowns pulled all the time. Ingrown tonails cut the nail, maybe a little skin, but the joint/bone are left intact.... Declawing means cutting off the entire joint. It would be like cutting off the entire toe at the knuckle just to remove the ingrown toenail... it doesn't grow back. Imagine cutting off the end joint of all your fingers and toes, then be expected to return to a completely active life right away. Cats need to dig in a litter box, imagine digging in gritty cat litter with raw nubs at the end of each finger... or be expected to walk, run, jump, climb with open and raw nubs for toes... in no way are the two situations compareable.

NB: I've had some responses saying this mutilation was Chinese, not Japanese. If this is true I do apologize to Japanese descendants for misinformation. I was trying to think of a Human analogy to the cruel declawing practise. There are other forms of cruel, unnecessary and painful mutilation of mainly female children, but as this page is about cats I chose this analogy. My apologies if I have got the country wrong. My defence is I was myself a child and didn't even know China and Japan were separate Countries as to me their writing looked similar, and the tonal Language sounded similar. The only difference obvious to me was that the people looked very different. I hope my point is nevertheless understood. If anyone remembers or knows of the Japanese tactic of foot-binding Human girls, this is more abusive. In Japan women with small feet were seen as attractive to men. Consequently parents of girls bound their feet tightly restricting their growth, in the hope they would find a husband from a good (eg. wealthy) family. These girls grew into adults in constant pain, and barely able to walk. I am unsure of the details but know it occurred. Just maybe someone of Japanese lineage or knowledge could explain further. I haven't even done any web search. I remember learning about it many times as a child. I am a Westerner. I just wondered what a good comparison would be. Also there is the generic known practice of tearing fingernails off while a person is conscious being used as a form of torture. All I'm trying to do is reinforce the point. The point being that there is a relevant reason why this practice of declawing domestic cats is banned in so many Countries. It is highly abusive, ineffective in its purpose, and should lead to both the owner and the vet being banned from owning or treating cats.

@PhoenyxAshe

@@alternative1999 That was China, and it did a bit more than just restrict the growth - it actually distorted the growth and shape of the foot, to the point that when China actually banned the practice, it was only enforced with younger women... I believe younger girls. (It's been a while.) After a certain age, the foot shape has been so mangled that the bindings were actually needed to maintain even the limited mobility they had - removing them would cause incredible pain and, from the photographs I've seen of adult women's feet once unbound, might not have sufficient natural support to allow them to stand unaided. The movie "Inn of the Sixth Happiness" did take a lot of liberties with the real life of Gladys Aylward, the scene with with her as the Foot Inspector, and the shock of having the old grandmother start to unbind her own feet as an example, is pretty spot on with the behaviors of the many at the time. And, to get this back on topic, I think Aylward's response at to one of the men who would "only have them rebound" after she left is about the same as I would do with a person wanting their cat de-clawed: "You do it, not a woman(vet). You listen to her scream."

@@alternative1999 You have the wrong country. It’s China, not Japan who had the foot binding starting in the 10th century until the communists took over in 1949. Declawing is generally illegal in the UK, something I'm glad about, but it can be done in exceptional circumstances. The tale I heard was of a woman who had to go into a home leaving behind two elderly (high teens) cats. Her and the cats had been dedicated to each other, she was pining in the home, they were pining in the shelter. The home would allow the cats there, but only if it could be guaranteed that they would not claw another resident or staff member. The shelter and vet agreed to approach the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) with the situation and the president gave permission for the cats to be declawed allowing them to be reunited with their owner at least for as long s the three of them had left. I'm not sure how long ago that was, may be there are alternative now, it isn't some thing I really look into as I've never needed or wanted to.

Then, if your cat escapes from the protected environment, there will be much less ability to defend itself. If at all possible, your cat should be an indoor-only animal. It is much less likely to acquire diseases that may or may not be curable, and will not be exposed to predators such as owls, dogs, coyotes(even in the city), possums, skunks, hawks, kids who are malicious, and all the things that can happen when a cat crosses the street. If they have been spayed or neutered, they are less likely to roam. Also, if they are indoors, they won't be killing and eating your songbirds. When I was a kid we at first would de-claw our cats. We were told that it would save us from scratches, save the furniture ect. When we saw what they actually do, we never did it after that and felt bad about it. Also if people are worried about getting scratched, it is just part of being a cat owner. You will learn from that what to do and what not to do with your cat. Cats are not proactive they are reactive to situations. It is important to learn their body language. I know when I can approach my cats and have to do things that are unpleasant (like vet trips, clipping nails, and giving medicine). That way you won't get hurt and the cat will be calmer. @@Katonycross You'd be "mean" too - read, anxious, constantly vigilant, on high alert for threats to life and limb, terrified generally, and exhausted from the endless overextension of energy if safety was one of your greatest and most legitimate concerns, and yet, you'd been deprived of your primary means of self-defense. Cats are hugely territorial animals. They MUST know their territory is secure in order to feel calm and safe. Without claws, they are utterly without their real means of protecting said territory. Their fangs are important, but they should be solely a supportive weapon. It's wholly destabilizing for the cat to feel she must rely entirely upon them for her bodily safety. I know you meant well, and you simply chose the word that came to mind which accurately described her behavior. And, in a YT comment, there's no space to explain all of the subtleties. I just wanted to elaborate, because that poor kitty certainly wasn't being mean. She was acting out of terror and chronic, relentless stress. She simply could never again feel safe. Poor Baby!! 😭☹️☹️

There should also be a Number 8: Do NOT feed your cat vegan food. They require meat to thrive, and you should also avoid any pet food that lists a grain/plant as the first ingredient (the ingredient listed first is present in greater volume than the others). So, if the first ingredient listed is wheat or corn, it's trash food. Make sure you are giving your furbabies the nutrients they need to live long, healthy lives XD.

Whatever the reason you can't have your cat anymore, don't take them to an apartment complex or to the countryside or to a park and leave them there. Take them to a shelter, call a rescue to take them, whatever you can do. Every "issue" I've encountered immediately went away as soon as I gave an outlet for that behavior. I also decided not to care that much about the state of certain furniture if mild destruction benefits the cats. I don't care if they pull a few threads from the headboard/bedframe as long as they are happily playing. I can always redress it and the bed functions of the bed still work even if it's a bit rough looking. Whenever I get new things I always keep them and future pets in mind. I don't care if every single thing I own breaks if that's what it takes to keep them healthy and happy. I buy all my furniture at estate sales and thrift stores, but even then I buy items with my cats in mind. It would be really stupid of me to buy upholstered seating made from textured fabrics, or (God forbid!) wicker. That's just irresistible to a cat who needs to shred to keep the claws healthy. I keep plenty of scratch posts, ramps, and even have a real log in my bathroom for them to enjoy. My bed belonged to my great-grandparents, it's cast iron circa 1880 (my grandfather was born in 1882, so that bed has seen some "family history" 😉. I loved playing on it when I was a kid and it lived on my grandparents' sleeping porch. It's high off the ground, so I climbed the ornate loops of the footboard to get on it. Now I have cat toys tied to strings hanging from that footboard. My cat loves playing with them first thing in the morning, I pull them up and toss them back down again for him to catch. The faux leather computer chair I'm sitting in now is comfortable, but the sides and armrests are shredded by my crazy tuxedo kitty, "Houdini". Since I only paid $5 for it at an estate sale, and it's still comfy, I couldn't care less. The entertainment of watching him sneak up, attack the chair, biting the armrests as the chair spins is worth a lot more than $5!! I plan on recovering the arms with padded fake fur, maybe attach some favorite toys to it with heavy elastic. My animals are my world. Furniture is just stuff. I was so happy when New York said "No more declawing cats!" My father always declawed every cat we had when I was growing up, I hated it. I moved back in with the parents when I was younger, brought my cat with me, I didn't even have him neutered, he had never sprayed and he was an indoor cat, so I left him "complete" haha Shortly after I returned home, my cat made the mistake of stretching out on my fathers speakers, next thing I knew he was declawed and neutered. I was livid, I wasn't asked, I wasn't told of the behavior, I just came home one day and there was Grover mangled... He had such big beautiful claws/paws too.. After that he got fat and lazy. Was never the same cat. Still awesome, but not the same. He recently died, made it to 17. Good run old boy.

Once I applied Jacksons strategy of stopping play altogether if he would use any part of my body as prey + having 3-5 scratch posts all around his claws were never an issue. @RianeBane
2 жыл бұрын
@@spilledsoju03 Um....wrong. Everybody here agrees that declawing is bad. That doesn't mean that EVERYTHING to do with their claws is bad. For lots of cats, if they scratch enough on their own, their claw length will typically remain under control because the "sheath" will be scratched off on its own as you mentioned. But the sheath doesn't come off every time a cat scratches - it grows and becomes fragile at the end over time. Some cats' claws are less fragile and the sheaths take longer to fall off than others. Some cats do not scratch enough, either because of physical limitations or their feline personality or some other reason. When a cat's claws get long enough that they are becoming uncomfortable for the cat - i.e breaking, frequently snagging on objects, or even interfering with their gait - there is nothing wrong with trimming their claws. Cats' claws don't have nerve endings in the keratin claw material. As long as you cut with plenty of distance from the quick, leaving the majority of the curve of the claw and just trimming the tip of the nail, it does them no harm.
@capuchinosofia4771

@@RianeBane this! I trim my cat claws with a nail clipper when i notice she gets stuck way too often (literally just the tip of the claw, like the last 2mm). The claws dont always trim naturally and they get stuck in blankets, comforters, couches and clothing! She then gets nervous cause she cant free herself and she's clearly unconfortable. So, i trim them slightly so they are blunter and less likely to puncture and get caught in the fabrics.
@hinachan70

@@spilledsoju03 My situation definitely doesn't fall under this category because while my mom's cat frequently uses his cat scratcher his claws remain sharp enough that I do lightly trim them. Because he loves to be picked up and has a habit of digging his claws in (I swear he thinks he'll fall every time). I have uh, a lot of scarring on my shoulders where he loves to grab and that's what prompted me to help him keep those claws under control. There's gotta be some compromise between us where I hold him like he begs, and I don't unintentionally end up with bloody scratches/peroxide/band-aids.

Declawing is illegal here in Denver. The only declawed cats at the shelter are 10+ yrs old. Thank goodness it’s illegal. I’m sure people would still do it regardless. Many years ago I had a Russian Blue mix & slowly taught him to keep his claws retracted. Reward, not punishment. He died at 16 & never scratched anyone or anything. He was raised with Great Danes, tho, so he thought he was a dog. Did all the tricks with them! Walked on a leash, ‘barked’ at the window with them, greeted us at the door when we got home, was very affectionate with everyone. We enjoyed every second of our unusual “Dusters” life.

my tuxedo cat named Oreo is an adventurous one. i got a rather shocking story to tell. so one morning i saw him jump into the engine bay from under my dad's truck, and honestly i thought he would not like it in there and get out of there shortly. or would he? i went to mow the yard half an hour later and saw my dad drive out to town, only to come back hearing loud meowing under the hood. when my dad opened it, Oreo was right on top of the engine and jumped right out panting. me and my parents were really shocked but so relieved that he miraculously survived. so yeah. Oreo's curiosity almost killed him. there are many videos of cats being freed from engine bays or even other dangerous areas in various vehicles, so if you park your car or truck in an area where cat(s) hang out frequently, make sure to check under the hood or other areas cat can get into and Not assume they would get out of there soon before you drive off.

I think there are some exceptions that allow squirting in certain specific circumstances, though never as punishment after the act. For instance when I'm making food for myself, my cats are not allowed to jump on the counter where I'm cooking. After all, I consider it to be less damaging for a cat to get a few drops of water in their undercoat than their paws getting burned from jumping on something too hot. Just as I think there are some exceptions when it comes to skipping yearly vet visit but also in certain quite specific circumstances, like mine as I have several aquintences who happen to be vets or vet assistents, so when they visit me I let them check out my cats so my cats don't have to travel to them.

@@raelauren504 Yea I'm more of the apply the minimal amount of force needed to fend off way worse harm kinda guy. Reality/god will punish even those children anyway: not paying sufficient attention when learning to walk or ride a bike will be punished by falling. Though to be honest, I don't want them to spoil my food with their dirty paws either, so even when the stove is not on but I'm preparing food I will squirt them when they jump on the counter. Though I should add that my current cats never even made the attempt when younger and are too old to even make that jump now. My previous cat learned the hard way by using my woodstove as a stepping stone to get on the counter while it was on, all I could do was to put him with his favourite food on a wet tower to counteract the burning of his paws. The difference with kids is that so much of it is age dependant, when talking babies there is no use in punishing at all, when talking toddlers we are at a similar level as cats, when children learn to speak about and to understand why something is dangerous and what the consequences of straying from the guidelines will be we can start letting reality take over.

We have done several things to get our Sophie to not scratch on the couch. We finally said "here, use the couch because Mom wants a new one, anyway." But here's the funniest thing that we encountered on this no-scratching journey. I put the sticky strips on the no-no surfaces. First day "hey it worked!" Second day was so-so because she mostly avoided those things. Third day I noticed she was near the no-no surfaces but not doing anything about them, except studying them. This is a very smart cat! She figured out how to get around these was to pull them off! Once she got them off of one spot, I watched her go to another spot where she pawed at the strip until she got an end loosened and could grab it with her teeth and pull until she got it off and on to the floor! Needless to say, by the next day I found a few piles of sticky strips. I have always said that at times she looks like a kitty on a mission and now I have proof!! Lots of laughing ensued after this!

Vet visits are essential for cats (pets) of all ages! My oldest kitty, Whiskers, is almost 18 yrs. old. She was a tiny stray that wondered onto my porch way back in July/ 2005 when she was roughly about 2 months old. She is strictly an indoor cat. Two years ago something seemed a bit “off” & she wasn’t doing very well. We took her to the vet & she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. She now takes medication twice daily & is doing so much better. She still runs around the house like a kitten but doesn’t jump or climb up onto things as much as she used to so we made ‘steps’ for her to climb up onto the bed or the bay window, etc. People absolutely need to do regular wellness check-ups at the vet even if your kitty seems fine. If your cat is unwell and/or develops an illness, hopefully it can be caught early enough for proper treatment.
@lilpoo1972

Unfortunately even when you heed frequent vet visits, kitty may be beyond sick. In October I took my 13 year old kitty with very well controlled hyperthyroidism to the vet because she just didn’t seem right. Vet thought possibly a rogue infection causing her to feel poorly so she gave her an antibiotic shot and she got passed around the office as she was a favorite and we were soon back home. Maybe 5 minutes after getting home, Smeagle was army crawling towards me and panting with her mouth wide open. Sadly she had developed a saddle thrombus that despite her chronic condition being controlled her hyperthyroidism had progressed anyway. Still a very sad spot in my life because she literally was my best friend. I swear she was part human. I’m glad she didn’t need to suffer very long because she certainly didn’t deserve that. But it came on so quickly and directly after a clean bill of health from the vet, you just never can be sure. So please don’t skip the much needed vet appointments, your babies deserve so much better than that.

The two cats I grew up with each lived until 25. Yes, twenty-five. We were astonished at their longevity but so very glad to have them around for so long! One lived until her body just started to give out and she wouldn't stay healthy. The other lived until she had a bad stroke and it was obvious that it was her time. Very, very sad to have to let a much beloved friend go but that's life. Both were just such beautiful, sweet, gentle animals! I still miss them, even 15 years later. To me, they were part of my family as valuable as my parents or my siblings and I miss them as much as my own dad. I never had an issue with my cat, she did try once but I already had scratching posts for her, I went over to the post and started scratching it, she heard the noise and was intrigued so started copying me and she found it so much more satisfying that she never touched furniture again! She loved the sensation, the noise. the fluffy toy and she even found out it helped maintain her claws in a natural way, they were never overgrown and the post helped to shed the old top layer of claw. My family ended up taking in a couple of cats that had been dumped in a car park mid-winter. They were barely socialised and spent the first two weeks we had them hiding under my bed. Not forcing interactions is entirely what got them to be okay with us. The day I woke up to find them sleeping at the foot of my bed after existing along side them in that space was amazing. Of course it took some extra time for them to not dart under the bed again the moment I moved, but this stuff takes time. These days they are absolutely loveable cats who love to curl up with people on their terms and actually the cat in my profile pic is one of these two rescues

Not sure if everyone has a vet that would do this for them, but when I lived in an apartment that required it my vet lied for me. The apartment people never checked in any way shape or form. If it happened again I'd probably first try to educate the people since declawing actually leads to more behaviors that are more destructive (like urinating outside of the box) but like I said, lying worked for us. I'm thankful that my state has banned the procedure though, after next month it's illegal to declaw here.

@@cosmati75 I used to live with a couple of friends whose cats had absolutely torn the front doorframe to shreds. Their dogs had ripped up a huge section of carpet behind the bedroom door while digging at it to get out. So while I think the declawing rule is utter stupidity, unfortunately it's come about because renters are often just shitty human beings. It's not really just renters, of course, but when you don't own the property and don't care how you or your animals treat it... (And I hate landlords too, so I'm not on their side at all! But for instance, when I was in 10th grade my parents rented out our house while we lived for a year in another state for Dad's job. In that time, the family living there let their cats urinate ALL. OVER. It had even soaked into the wood under the carpeting. So it's not so much the animals that have created these rules, it's the fact that too many humans have no respect for anything outside themselves. "This is why we can't have nice things," etc.)

As someone from Europe, I remember learning for the first time what 'declawing' is that they do in the US, and I was genuinely traumatized for some days upon learning about it. It is VERY shocking to me. I don't know how people can cut short parts of the actual fingers and toes and bones of their own pets, that they then have to try to walk on and balance! I can not imagine the pain for the poor animals. That is such animal abuse.... how can it ever be legal? We are major cat loving countries over here. More than half of families have cats. And I have hardly ever even seen or heard anyone with problems like injuries or damaged furniture because of cats. Dog puppies chewing on stuff, yes, that it is fairly common. Cat ruining things, nope, that is rare. Cats adapt their habits quite easily or naturally if you guide them or give them the right tools, unlike dogs that need a lot of training. You show them the scratch pole and discourage the rest in some creative ways like this video shows, and they adapt pretty quickly. Make it available and intuitive for them where to go and what to do by giving them the right options in the right places, and they figure it out. And they DO NOT scratch babies! They have protective instinct. Nor adults, as long as you do not abuse them and treat them badly and aren't in their face so much. Whatever you do, DON'T HURT THEM! If you declaw your cat, you will not grow a very balanced bond with them, because violating their natural way and bodily strengths without a doubt instills fear in them and damages their trust. Leave them as they are, just chill, and they will love you and just become your close friend. Also, if you care more about your sofa or couch than a small living being that requires our care, you do NOT deserve to have an animal! If you are kind and responsible, you do. Good luck, you will be fine :)

Veterinarians in the US heavily promoted it, giving "deals" on it to have it done while the animal was already put under for the surgery. It was called de-clawing so that's what people understood it to be. My family gave in to the vet and had it done on my kitten. She does not long later from feline leukemia and I was devastated. My mom didn't find out what had been done to my kitty until KZitem and she was horrified to tears. And the video she watched said it's a racket in the veterinarian industry to make money. So that's why it's done.

This is going to sound mean though it’s not meant to, but the statement that cats don’t attack babies is a delusion. Yes some of them do without provocation and despite being treated well. Dogs do the same. It comes down to their own personality. A friend had two cats, one would attempt to attack her baby’s legs, the other stepped in and protected the baby at all costs. Guess which one still lives with her? Cats are hunters by nature. Don’t disrespect the fact just because they live in your house. As for easy training to advert undesirable behavior,…. Again it depends the cat. I had two cats, for one cat aside from attacking my son who wouldn’t ever play with her because she expressed she didn’t want him to touch her, only certain people. This same cat scratched up everything including the walls. For a long time nearly a year she would tear off her caps to be able to do this. And she knew what she was doing. I say this because we could cradle the other younger cat T-shell, soon after seeing that she got jealous and lazed over for me to pick her up like this also. I thought she had anxiety for her to behave the way she did read French reports on the use of ltheanine coupled with melatonin and tryptophan. She relaxed enough to pause in her attacks to the kitten but only waited to see if I was watching. There came a point where my husband and I stopped petting her because of the way she was acting and then she’d go to my younger son whom she traumatized to get pets, of course he wouldn’t because she gave too many mixed signals based on conditions, not simply because she knew she was safe with him. There’s a lot of insane things she’s done to not just the furniture and household items, but to the other cat, my son, her normal groomer that I had to step in and save from her. I’ve never declawed or hated an animal as much as I did right then. Because my children are my everything. She’s gone from my home and in a cage at someone else’s who takes in troubled cats. But after her, I can see why cats get declawed. Btw she was born and raised a house cat before I had her, she was taken into custody. The T-shell was born on the street as a stray and had much better manners

@@krystlebee931 this sounds like something i have honestly never seen or heard of and it sounds like a very rare case like this cat had a lot of issues like extreme anxiety. I am not sure why you didn't straight away find a solution like get a cat expert in for help or get her rehomed to a trainer sooner. In the worst imaginable scenario if that wasn't possible, i think even leaving her to live in the garden depending on the climate, putting her in a seperate room or even putting her to sleep, would be more peaceful than hating on her and declawing her as a way of taking control and revenge.

i'm from germany and it's the same here. You can buy small animals in a store like hamsters, mice etc but never cats and dogs like in america. Animals are not a trading ware, they're living beings and i am happy i live in a country where at least cats and dogs aren't sold in stores. Breeders.. well, i'm not so much a fan of it but it depends, there are good and bad ones. I'm more the adopter, i would rather get cats from a shelter than from a breeder bc i feel shelter cats are mostly unwanted and that makes me sad so i'd prefer giving the "unwanted ones" a home over just going to a breeder and get a cat everyone wants. In my country it's also forbidden to euthanize pets that are absolutely healthy, so putting one down bc of aggressiveness is NOT going to happen here, no sincere vet would put down a healthy animal bc its aggressive. Shelter animals are also not suffering this fate as in other countries where they put down animals bc there's too much of them. Declawing is forbidden here too. Plus putting your pets on a vegan/vegetarian diet is going to be forbidden here, too. My country seems to slowly wake up regarding pet safety and health.
