Another theme I feel Shape of Water touched upon was being an outcast/ marginalized. We have a disabled woman, a black woman, and a gay man who find solace amongst each other. And I feel like the fish creature was kind of a metaphor for all that as well.

This is exactly what it was going for, and honestly, its lame as fuck. I mean, lets be honest now, if Clint Eastwood did this movie there would be enormous backlash because of his representation of ''the maginalized''. Those characters are SO out of place, my god, why do I have to see her neighbour trying to sell a painting? Why do I have to see him get rejected in the diner? What has that got to do with the monster and the mute, the beauty and the beast? That being a mute, a monster or gay is similar? Geez, I hope i misunderstood this and its genius and I didnt get it.
@asiakimberly9755
6 жыл бұрын
panocasabe well the whole movie, it was trying to show that the fish man wasn’t a monster at all. Phenotype doesn’t determine character.
@panocasabe8227
6 жыл бұрын
It's very risky to get into that. Phenotype? It's still a creature, one of a kind, its not human even if it has a certain character. I mean, forget the creature, corellating a mute with gay or black, its insane. Being mute is a malfunction, a disease its not like people are against mutes. Gay people are rejected morally by society, opressed and let's not get into blacks, which have been marginalized even worse. Again, if this movie would've been made by a white director it would be taken off the cinema. Also, the love story between the mute and the creature is extremely banal. She gets him eggs and they fall in love just because... because she's a mute and he is a mute? Oh lord

SPOILER BELOW**** I agree with this! I also felt like when her scar turns into gills at the end, it was saying that she was a "fish out of water" she was considered an outcast on land, but it's because she belonged somewhere else (the ocean). No one is ever really useless. Even those born with disabilities are meant for a greater purpose. I love this movie, and I love that it was able to depict such a deep message without being political!

(...)but it’s pretty clear that old Captain Marsh must have brought home some odd specimens when he had all three of his ships in commission back in the twenties and thirties. There certainly is a strange kind of streak in the Innsmouth folks today-I don’t know how to explain it, but it sort of makes you crawl. You’ll notice a little in Sargent if you take his bus. Some of ’em have queer narrow heads with flat noses and bulgy, stary eyes that never seem to shut, and their skin ain’t quite right. Rough and scabby, and the sides of their necks are all shrivelled or creased up. Get bald, too, very young. The older fellows look the worst-fact is, I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a very old chap of that kind.(...) Yes, he was quite a racist. But he did write amazingly! Anyway, this is why my favorite from him is Dreams in the Witch's House and The Colour that fell from the Sky. No racism in those.

When I heard about the movie I thought the whole relationship thing was going to be kind of weird but it's so beautifully done in the movie. I found myself really rooting for them to be happy. I feel like the neighbor helps lead the audience to it because he's saying "it's not even human" but the way she explains the whole situation is so interesting and makes you really understand. The movies visuals and sound track are beautiful and really set the tones for the movie. Even as someone who isn't really into romance stories I really fell in love with it. Pacing did get a little weird at times and didn't find myself really invested in the subplot. But overall I find that to be me looking for problems rather than Something that really bugged me.

What people don’t understand is that it’s the SAME concept as Beauty & Beast except it’s not some syrupy tale where the beast becomes a dashing stud at the end. It’s instead reversed where Elisa becomes like the creature and is able to live with him under the sea. It’s basically a modern Beauty & the Beast that touches upon present day social issues. It’s a fine film, especially in its production value.

The Shape of Water is like a Rorschach test. 1. Romantics see it as a unique love story that also is an ode to 50’s-60’s cinema in style and filming technique 2. Literary and visual arts folks see a cornucopia of symbolism and color analysis that will keep film students busy for a couple of generations 3. Fans of del Toro's talent see a master director who can create and then tell a strangely bizarre story while bringing very talented actors and crew to even greater heights than anyone thought possible 4. Those in the political center or center-right or center-left may see it as call for repudiation of haters on all edges of the political spectrum (and I am a white/hetero male who has voted GOP back to Pres. Bush) 5. Those who come straight from alt-right and illuminati sites see a "beastiality" film - but miss realizing (*spoilers) two central characters are a male sentient god-like 'creature' and a female who actually is a 'fish out of water.' 6. Those who find it boring may prefer Transformers or other CGI-heavy flicks 7. Dudes and gals who grew up loving classic and B movie horror see an homage to creature feature films 8. Movie producers see a film with a budget of under $20mil, with production value that appears to exceed $130mil - which not coincidentally is its worldwide ticket sales to date 9. As someone who saw about 4 dozen films in 2017, and have been predicting Oscar winners for years, I see this best pic of 2018 as arguably the best of the Oscar BP winners over the past five years

Guillermo Del Toro is one of my favorite directors. I kinda wish he did the Hobbit movies because he wouldn't have messed it up or make everything feel bloated. Let's hope if they ever do Halo, he's in the driver seat. Great review Chris! I'm looking forward to checking this baby out!

The Mother Flickers I agree except about the Hobbit. The Hobbit should never have been made unless it could live up to the standards of Tolkien or at least keep going on the level of the first movies. Del Toro tends to be a little too independent minded to do that. I would have liked to see a right minded director take the challenge with Del Toro consulting on visuals.

They had the ending that way to allow another season and to explain the other part of the paradox. I agree though that it did come off as the weakest part in the whole series, reminds me of the infamous ep7 Stranger things; it's like it didn't need to be there and makes the show overall a little weaker. Dark should have just ended after 1 season as a limited series, oh well I am curious what will happen next and I suppose that is something in itself.

"The Shape of Water" was amazing and probably of my top 7 best favorite films of 2017. It was a romantic fantasy film about a muted woman who worked at the secret facility and she discovers a mutated fish creature who was brutally beaten by the government so she wanted him to be released and share chemistry for their attention. I actually enjoy the visuals and the set pieces were beautifully made and designs and artwork by Del Toro was nicely crafted and he probably made a gorgeous film that it is more like a "Beauty and the Beast" storytelling with some dark moments, intense, and mystery. Pretty how he has done for his films like the original classic, "Pan's Labyrinth." The performances were so so good including Hawkins done a terrific job as a muted woman with sign language and reacts to her emotions between the monster and life. Jenkins has done a good job, Spencer as always the best supporting lady ever, Shannon as a meaningful bad guy, and the rest were good and yes Doug Jones in it was great as a fish monster. It may not be the best because they think it is weird for a woman who gets sexual attention with the monster, but I don't think it's not bad and it could be cute sometimes. Overall, love it and giving it 10/10. "The Shape of Water" was nominated 13 Academy Awards including Best Picture.

Honestly feel like this year was a year for the visual spectacle. Blade Runner's stunning cinematography, Kingsman's fun dynamic comic booky feel, Thor Ragnarok's grandiose epic action shots, Last Jedi's simple yet really powerful money shots at times. Hell, even Ghost in the Shell was incredible visually. Baby Driver was incredibly shot and super memorable as well. And now Shape of Water. T'was a great, awesome year for visual cinema :)
@Slimshadow457

Aww I love contrarian know it alls that spout out that everything people enjoyed was awful without any further explanation whatsoever x) Reason Shape of Water won is because if look past the weird "girl is infatuated with a creature story", you get a story about personality, how to feel fulfilled in life, and the lengths people go to to achieve that goal they set for themselves. The directing was superb, with a very clean and masterful grasp on atmosphere and how to invest us in the world of the film. Also love how you chose to reply to my comment which doesn't speak to the quality of the movies in and of themselves, but just of the visual aspect, which, despite whatever you might think on them, is undeniably very distinguishable and very, very well done. Say whatever the fuck you want about Star Wars 8's plot, it was visually the most interesting film in the franchise, the shot composition had some actual thought behind it, and the directing really shows through the billion dollar production, which is no easy feat. So yeah. You might disagree with the story, but Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the best directed Star Wars film yet. Don't @ me.
@Slimshadow457

Don't @ me means don't reply, dickweed. I don't care about your opinion. Especially when it's backed up by the depth of argument found in my local kiddie pool :P Have fun hating some movies people enjoy and being for some reason mad enough to write 2 dozen lines about it. Imma go watch some movies I like. Recommend you do the same ^^'
@Slimshadow457
6 жыл бұрын
If someone callin you dickweed over the internet is a personal attack for you then I very honestly think you should stay off the internet for a bit x) Notice how I'm not tackling the argument, though. Because I don't want to. I've heard people make these baseless claims about Star Wars a hundred times before, often much, much more eloquently and thoroughly then "The story's shit and my friends agree!" I'll cut the snarky asshole bit for a second, and just say: 1) Notice when someone's taking the piss and doesn't really value your opinion. Will save you a lot of time not wasting your breath. 2) If you want to have a "conversation", don't immediately cut off the person's main point of praise for the damn film. Notice how you got offended when I didn't respect your opinion? You basically went BRUH WHO GIVE A FCK ABOUT DIRECTION AND SHIT. I do. Who looks to their friends after a movie and says "The directing was nice." I do. Chris here on youtube does. THE ACADEMY. Who give Oscars? They care. That's the point! A lot of people care about how films are made and the different aspects of what they might like. I hate the movie Super's story, but I think it's absurdly well directed. Because there IS a way to try to enjoy something, even on a secondary level once you open your tiny narrow mind. Don't think 'err derr i dont like it that's stupid', just think "Why was this made like this? What is the director fuckin trying to say?" Why is Rey force sensitive? Because we've SEEN characters grow into the force already! MULTIPLE TIMES! "Errr why is Rey an expert with the force" you fuckin idiot, how is Luke, a kid who NEVER PILOTED a SINGLE SHIP, now suddenly an expert who outmaneuvers TRAINED pilots, and is like the only pilot of the rebel fleet to make it out alive when there are far more talented dudes in there? Can you get into an F22 and drop a bomb on something the size of, let's be generous here, a football field? No. So shut the hell up about Rey. Some characters are just fucking good at things. But if you looked beyond the hilariously trigger-inducing blue milk cow on Luke's planet, and saw the message of the film, you'd realize that doesn't mean you're not destined for greatness, even if you're not instantly a master at stuff. Open your damn mind, and learn what the goddamn return key on a keyboard is. Sure, I wrote a long text but at least I put some spaces in there out of common courtesy for the person who might read it. Try it! Oh, and grammar and spelling are like genitals, everyone's got em, but if you know how to use em well, the world will be better for it! The teacher who will be grading you next book report or whatever they read at your high school (if I'm not overestimating here) will be very grateful :) Cheers

Honestly, having seen this film recently and trying to go in with as much of an open mind as possible, I really don't understand the massive amount of praise it's been getting. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad movie, but I was personally quite disappointed, and I feel like in this case Chris, you may be reading too much into it as a result of being caught up in the Oscar hype train (though I could be wrong. Opinions are opinions). There were plot threads in this film that popped up for a bit but never went anywhere (like Giles's sexuality, Strickland's family and Zelda's strained relationship with her husband), and so much was never explained. The creature's powers were so convenient and could just be whatever they needed to be for the plot. The relationship between Elisa and the creature was rushed. As others have said, the sexual explicitness was over the top, unnecessary and cartoonish. Compare this film to the Peter Jackson King Kong, another tale about a lonely woman bonding with a misunderstood monster. They created such a developed, compelling bond without needing to ram the sexual aspect down our throats. This film felt like artsy, lazy Oscar bait IMO.
