The main reason I am always impressed with The Shield as a whole is because the very first episode ties into the very last episode and the continuity is extremely solid for a show spanning 6 long seasons! The very concept of the shield impresses me and I'm still disappointed I got into the show as late as I did. I remember seeing the classic "im a different kind of cop" promos for The Shield back in highschool and just assumed Vic was like a typical Martin Riggs type who had extreme methods for getting things done. I really want to go back and experience the "twist" of the pilot episode. The fact that the main character is a dirty cop who does such a deplorable act in the FIRST EPISODE and the whole series is them trying to cover that up is a brilliant premise. I always try to imagine a first time viewer who knows nothing about the shield and their reaction to the end if the pilot.

I was a kid when the Shield came out so I didn't fully comprehend everything. I'm re-watching the series now, and while I'm impressed with the writing, there's tons of little technical things that are wrong. Nothing to do with the writing, just gun/tactical things. One episode in season 1, Vic is cleaning the barrel of his 1911 pistol with it fully assembled (which would only serve to press carbon back into where it absolutely shouldn't be). In another episode, Lem clears a room by swinging around his entire body into a door way with his firearm held out in front of him the entire time. It's just little dumb stuff like that. I'm surprised they didn't have some sort of tactical consultant for the show. If they did and it was a cop, I guess that would explain it, though.

I didn't know this, yet his presence doesn't feel forced. Retrospectively, I think it was a good idea because it allows to emphasize the difference of trajectory between a corrupt cop and a corrupt politician, the first one at best saves his ass but ends up alone with nothing, at worst ends up dead or in prison ; the second one, while officially condemning the shortcuts and violent actions of some cops, silmutaneously uses them and takes credit for their successes (up to the very last episode) and ends up mayor.

Nah, Shane is definitely Walton’s best role although he’s great as Boyd Crowder too IMO. And I wouldn’t really say it’s the same, Justified S1 is actual basic cable network episodic shit, The Shield was more episodic in the beginning but not fully episodic and developed a lot of stuff for the future. Each season built upon the last and expanded on the show with a properly planned endgame, while Justified was more of a show that did whatever each season and didn’t fully have a plan. Which is crazy cause the final season is amazing, it’s a great show, but it wasn’t that good at the start and not nearly as great as The Shield IMO.

I started writing a retrospective for the series a few months ago when I realized nobody had really given The Shield a proper once-over on here. I kinda figured somebody would finish theirs before mine. Can't wait to watch! It's such a landmark show. Breaking Bad, for instance, would've NEVER happened without The Shield. I highly recommend the blu-ray box set. It's completely remastered and has just about every special feature you could dream of. Definitely worth the (criminally low) price tag!

@@MichaelChiklisCares I owned the DVD sets from back in the day but I have to respectfully disagree entirely here. While there are some shadows and obvious crew present every now and then, it still doesn't take away from the experience. I'm a very close watcher but even I had to have them pointed out to me. In fact, some might say it adds to the "fly on the wall" documentary style that the series did so well. It's never looked or sounded better and I would never recommend returning to that format or master ever again lol the extras alone are more than worth the price of admission. For instance, the 2018 roundtable reunion is an incredible watch. You can see how much the actors and crew cared about this series. Different strokes though, you know?

The Shield is the most crude, raw, brutal and realistic police show in history. It broke the classic "immaculate and pure" cop stereotype portrayed in CSI, Law and Order, etc. In real world, street cops are tempted to do antisocial activities and even work with criminals. Those who deal with gangs, drug dealers, cartels, rapists, serial killers and other fine people pay a BIG price and end with their personal and professional life messed. This show portrays that aspect precisely. And today with ultra strong and violent cartels, drug Pharma industries and fentanyl, things have just got worst. Now in 2023 it's imposible a TV show like the Shield in this WOKE era. Lets thank the Shield aired before this Disneyfication years.

The final shot is pretty great. His compulsion and obsession with being an authority figure drives him to make poor decisions to such a degree that even though he did it, he got away with everything and his only real punishment is a life of mediocrity, he's ready to throw himself back into the mix and ruin it all. He fought hard to get out of it, sold out his friends, murdered innocent people, and was protected by the system in a way only cops could be. He throws it away anyhow. He won't stop until he's dead or locked up forever. He simply refuses to change and that's a real tragedy. It was all for nothing.

Also notice how the S1 ending parallels the finale, the cycle keeps repeating. The show is very focused on the cycle of abuse and violence. Vic tortures Juan Lozano by shoving a bong down his throat, which plants the idea in his mind to rape Aceveda. Or how we see Joe Clarke perverted Vic in a similar way that he would go onto do with Shane, and then Shane would get with Army. Brilliant show. Now that I think about it that could’ve possibly been the reason for the inclusion of Tina.

I would argue that even more fundamental than any social commentary is the absolute essential of drama, which is that actions have consequences. the shield is ultimately about something that is spoken by one of its own characters "you cannot protect those you love from the choices that you make". I suppose if you were to summarize the entire show in a single sentence it would be something like: _A man does a bad thing but still think he is a good person, he gets away with it and loses everything._

This show got me ready for "The Wire." Its finale, IMO, is the best finale in TV history. I don't know if it has been mentioned, but I read a couple of things in an article: 1)The Sopranos had just ended and Shawn Ryan hated the ending. He wanted to tie up as many arcs as possible. 2)The finale was debuted at a theater in NY. It ended to silence and then a slow-building standing ovation.

When people ask me for good tv recommendations, the first question I ask is if they've watched this show. I love how the tension just ramps up and up and the ending is just spectacular. Very few shows ever nail the landing but for my money The Shield, The Leftovers and Six Feet Under ( which Shield creator Shawn Ryan said the ending was perfect) do a great job of this. This show is criminally underrated and hope in time it gets the flowers it so rightfully deserves.

Thank you for spreading content about "The Shield". More people need to watch it. I stumbled upon it six months ago. My friend advised me to watch. Ended the final season a few days ago and can't stop thinking about how good this Tv show. For people who dive deep in cinema language, script, storytelling "The Shield" is a miracle. In terms of how characters' arcs need to be ended, how the writers don't try just "to shock" viewer. Everything felt so real. What I like the most about the story you don't see heroes vs enemies conflict (for example Starks vs Lanisters in GoT), you see your favourite characters conflict. It hits hard. It really something unique. You don;t know who you want to win or lose you just watch and wait what will happen next. I think "The Shield" has the best story and ending in terms of characters. I've never expirienced something similar. Masterpiece.

One of the things that I think immediately speaks to the show's unflinching portrayal of police corruption is the fact that, after they made the pilot, they weren't allowed to wear LAPD uniforms anymore. Hence the uniforms in the rest of the series, with their more generic, gold, distinctly non-LAPD shields, bizarrely worn on the right. One episode was all it took, for the LAPD to condemn the series.
